As well as other dangerous games like tag and dodgeball.

We, as a country, have lost our Fing minds.

No longer could they let off their youthful energy — pent up from hours of long division — by cavorting outside for 22 minutes of unstructured play, or perhaps with a vigorous game of tag or dodgeball. Such games had been virtually banned by the principal, Mark S. Johnson, along with kickball, soccer and other “body-banging” activities, as he put it, where knees — and feelings — might get bruised.

We had a game called crossball banned in our middle school. Basically a variant of dodgeball, with four teams. Played it with very small soft balls (lol) and I can't remember a single person ever getting hurt. I remember the principal calling it "a dangerous activity that threatens the safety of every child involved" or something like that.

I love the line "knees and feelings might get bruised".

Well Gwad help us!!!!

This was my favorite part...

Mr. Johnson finally relaxed some prohibitions after a parade of parents complained. Now, twice a week when a parent or grandparent is present, fourth and fifth graders are allowed to play a modified version of kickball as long as the score is not kept.

They can count. Trust me buddy... They're keeping score.

My favorite?

Children are still encouraged to move about, he said, and are free to walk the grounds with the school nurse, or depending on the day, sing in the chorus, play chess or pick up litter.

Oh, the words I would have with a principal if my child was sent on recess and told to go pick up litter...

I will say this though...

I wonder how many of those same parents who are complaining would be the first ones in the principal's office throwing a hissy fit after little Johnny broke his arm at recess.

Seriously though guys...

This may not be such a bad idea. I lost a game of kickball 12-9 in fourth grade and it still haunts me to this day. If we only hadn't been keeping score.

kick ball is dumb anyway. Get these kids playing some real sports like baseball.

Back in my day we played murder ball and dodgeball in PE. We rode our bikes all day all over the place without helmets. We left the house in the morning and came back at the end of the day for dinner. We walked 2 miles to school, jaywalking across busy four lane roads. We got smacked around by our teachers when we were out of line. And a whole bunch of other stuff that is frowned on now. There was no way to contact us and thus helicopter parent us in any way. Glad I grew up when I did.
