I have a conspiracy theory I'd be happy to share here. I'll try not to get too long winded on it.
The facts: Jimmy Sexton, agent for both Kiffin and Saban.
Kiffin lays an egg at USC and get's fired. In the mean time, Texas is looking at throwing big money at Saban. Saban is on the fence and has a contract on the table that he has yet to sign. Sexton wisely uses the Texas offers for Saban an leverages that to get a whopping raise for Saban.
Now the conspiracy.. Sexton: "Nick, I have a client whose stock is down now and he needs someone to give him a break. Can you help me out?"
Now his stock is back up. There are arguments as to why. Some swear he's the best OC since sliced bread and others (me included) tend to think that Alabama, with their level of talent, could be MUCH better with anyone else. In other words, it's hard to fail at Bama.
Consider that he's pretty much been fired from his other jobs (except UT) it's hard to give him credit for being good. Of course there is a lot of orange bias (me included) against Kiffin.
My prediction - so many head coaching positions at the end of this season. He'll land SOMEWHERE. And (in my Mr. T voice) I pity the fool that takes him. Would LOVE for it to be an SEC school for revenge purposes. Would like to beat him on a regular basis.
We hate Kiffin so much yet he got us the closest to beating Bama we've been in years, and should've won, if not for the astronomical once in a lifetime events happening twice with Mt.Cody. He also made a guy who received death threats for his poor play at QB under the previous coaches turn into an NFL draft pick and is now arguably the best non NFL QB playing (which translates to, he'd make a team if he really wanted to most likely.) Players here loved him until he left them for what seemed to be (and probably was) greener pastures at one of the 2 or 3 best coaching jobs in the country (whereas TN in its prime is one of the 8-10 or so best) that he also happened to have enormous ties to already.
We hate him for different reasons than other people hate him. He's a douche nozzle, yes. But his only true failed HC job was USC, which to be fair, is monumental considering their talent and how good they are. But saying he failed at the Raiders is presuming there were people who could have won at the Raiders at that time, and Al Davis alone made that place nearly impossible to win. Hell, Kiffin told him repeatedly not to draft Jamarcus Russel even and he didn't listen.
We hate him on another level than the Raiders or USC fans do. He didn't fail spectacularly with us. He gave us hope with recruiting, player development, and competing against our rivals, the three things the previous staff had major issues with, and then left us at the last minute. I still think the guy is an *******, and probably is not a good HC. But to call him bad at his job is ludicrous. The man can recruit with the best of them, he can coach players up, even players people gave up on or thought worthless, and he can call plays well. For an OC or DC on any level you literally can't ask for more than what he does.
And he gives a lot of great comedy as well, I'd watch Hard Knocks Bama just for his interactions with Saban.
The thing is, none of this means Kiffin is likeable. He's a piece of **** as a person for the most part. But that doesn't mean you can't recognize how good he is at what he does. I certainly would take him as our OC any day of the week, as would many places, college or NFL. Because this is a business, and wins are how we as fans get paid. You always take a guy who can give you even one more win.
