kill the grumbling about CJH

I have been less impressed this year but will give him the benefit of the doubt. This has been a weird team. No flow and injury to McCoy really hurt..

OP with the typical strawman post reeking of hyperbole and half truths.

In reality l, what I am seeing is the consensus that the play this season is unacceptable and CJH must produce better results. Our team needs to be competitive in EVERY game.
If all the criticism of Heupel and his assistant coaches were measured and reasonable like this, I think we'd all be getting along just fine.

It's the childish rants and vitriol that get things rolling.

Anyway, I agree with you, Tall Guy: the play this season has been unacceptable, and CJH must find a path to better results. We need to be competitive in every single game.

That's gonna take more leadership (coach and player) and more recruiting. Not because, as one guy said, I "think Mizzou out-talented us???" No. But because Mizzou out-competed us. They had 105 lads who wanted it more, walked onto the field focused, and played their hearts out. We didn't.

So we need a different mindset in the locker room. A lot of that is the upper class leadership. Rotate out the seniors from this year, and see if we have better leaders among the juniors and seniors of next year.

That's what I see as Josh's job #1. Make the team perpetually hungry, even while upgrading the talent level and developing the hell out of them in the off-season.

And see, we can say all that without a single "fahr this guy" rant. We can agree on all this, and still 100% support our coaches. Reasonable conversation among reasonable Vols fans. Love that.

Go Vols!

We all know he needs to make coaching changes when the season ends. We also know he is going to stub up, refuse to do it and ignore the problem(s). "That's where the fahr the guy next season if things don't improve" talk comes into play.

The Titans are having a very similar problem with a stubborn coach right now who did things his way. He is also going get his walking papers handed to him very soon.

It's not Heupel that most fans are concerned about, it's his coordinators that have a hard time at this level, everybody on staff is a tireless recruiter, but who has the ability to improve our players' skill sets, create schemes and formations to attack the other team and make decisions regarding putting talent on the field and building a team next year that is better than this year's team.

The Coordinators need to go. It doesn't matter how good they recruit if they can't develop talent.

I thought the 55-yard FG attempt, while down by 4 TDs, was an insult to the players and the fans. They should have went for the first down or a TD. It wouldn't have changed the game outcome but would have boosted the team's morale and gave the fans a little boost too.

It's starting. The armchair AD's are starting to pop up. "CJH ain't ****!" You want Jimbo? I hear he's looking. Anybody see Gruden on campus? Maybe someone has Urban Meyer on speed dial? No?

Seriously.....he's made us relevant again for the first time in a lot of our fans lifetimes. We actually sat at the #1 ranking. Yes it was for about a week last year. But for a team that's barely sniffed a top 25 ranking in almost 2 decades, we should be over the top thrilled, even with this disappointing season. We beat Alabama for the first time since Reagan was in office. We beat Florida for the first time since we stopped knowing which bathroom to use. We got some monkeys off our back.

You think there wouldn't be setbacks? We play in the SEC. We play in what is arguably the best division in the best conference in the NCAA. We had a Heisman quality QB last season. Who do you think saw that potential? Who turned a wide receiver corps of nobodies into NFL players? Who made us the best running team in the SEC? Who is about to put some running backs in the NFL? you think all that came from a talentless hack? Are we where we want to be? heck no. The rebuild is still in process. Probably will take 3-4 more years, at best, before we can sustainably compete with Alabama and Georgia. And we better hope FL doesn't get their legs back under them in the mean time. "Well, we got stomped by SC, Mizzou, and FL and they are garbage...." yep. We had bad games. We got exposed. We curb stomp UCONN and start crowing about "Vols by Fiddy!" against Bama. 75% of the people on VN are turnip seeds who believe their own hype. Sit down. Shut up. The adults are talking. We have work to do. He's the coach and will be for several more years.
Butch had us at #5/6.

With that said, I'm still a believer in Heup. He has done a lot of questionable things, but I'm hoping it's for better reasons, that we don't yet understand. Next 2 years will tell us what we need to know.

Next year will have to be junior leadership since there is a giant hole where Pruitt’s final aborted recruiting class would have been.

I keep seeing people complaining about folks wanting to fire coach. Yet, I haven't saw any comment here or on Twitter hoping coach gets fired. What I am seeing are people made about play calls, some staff needing to be let go, etc. Maybe I've just missed them and if I have, I'm fine with that. we're not to that point.

This is embarrassing. Frankly, I’m embarrassed for you. Posting such an unhinged thread and following it with sit down and shut up. It’s okay to criticize a person in this kind of position and the trends continue it’s only going to get louder.

Arkansas Razorbacks coach Pittman is 23-24 over the last 4 years and the fan base is getting restless. AD says they are bringing him back in 2024. Things could be worse.

I don't complain much but I have some doubts about CJH's offensive approach. Hurrying up during this particular season where our QB has been so inconsistent was/is a mystery. Brady Cook and Carson Beck may not be Heisman QBs, but they were both lethal passing against our D. Our anemic offense hustling thru our 3 and outs to give those guys more chances to surgically dissect our defense was simply self-defeating. It was a gimmick offense that worked well last season with Hooker moving the chains with his throws and legs, but it has not worked this year. It's way too late to discuss Nico, but I will say that it may not necessarily suit him either. I want some balance on time of possession. What good was it to go hurry-up and get so many penalties for early starts.

I don't like to kick FGs late in the game's last minute when we're being trounced instead of using every opportunity to score a TD.

This was an experienced team with plenty of seniors, but the leadership didn't reflect it on either side of the ball. All the best teams have good leaders like an Al Wilson on defense or a Herndon Hooker on offense to pick people up when adversity strikes or keep them focused in tight games. Although it never appeared like the team quit when they were behind, the urgency to score again just wasn't there this year and the leadership was lacking.

Finally, Tennessee is again dogged by the perception that we are just soft. Missouri and Geogia knew how to wrap people up and tackle. Our tendency to want to bump guys down looks so very weak. On the occasions where they tackled our legs, they wrapped them up so that our ball carriers were going down. We try to bump them down with our shoulders or dive at their feet after they are gone.

It may not be a five-alarm fire yet, but there are some concerns. Seniors leaving, junior class lean, we need to recruit hard and hit the portal harder. Ole Miss will probably finish 10-2 and Kiffin made bank at the portal.

We just don’t have the pieces to compete with the biggies, especially later in the season when the injuries start piling up. My concerns focus more on defense, but never getting legitimate competition at the QB position, in the portal (when some good ones were still out there) with Nico obviously not ready is also questionable. I remember last year’s Orange Bowl and the announcement that we had “found” our QB and thinking “yeah, right”! I think if you gave Joe 10 years in the NFL, he may one day be a competent backup QB. Why does he always look lost to me?

The offense for most of the year just seems slow and lost to me, stuttering, a bit like Joe Milton. Penalties, dropped balls, bad passes, virtually no intelligence in the QB run game. I remember Harrison Bailey being run outta town for no being able to “run” the offense, Joe Milton moves a bit like a big slow moose. I love how he does his moves that almost certainly worked 8 years ago in HS, only to be easily gobbled up by a LB 2 yards short of a FD.

With the defense I don’t know where to begin. It seems in some ways better and certainly the injuries don’t help. But over the last two games, both teams basically ran right over us. Getting blown out back to back, has some folks legitimately seeing pink. Something has to change…

8-4, I predicted 9-3. I guess I’ll take the bowl, sunshine, and the slight gleam that the Gators are still sleeping soundly in their dorms.

Lol silly fans this was always a long rebuild we just caught lightening in a bottle with hendon… Nico will lead us into the next true sustainable era The recruiting has been very good we just have to keep stacking classes we will be just fine… I don’t mind Heup not playing Nico as much I’ve seen all I needed to know he has that it factor feel for the game and will take this offense back to the top.

The Vols by Fiddy got old after the first time I saw it. And the fire CJH rants are ludicrous. I usually enjoy anything in between.

Firing Heup would be suicidal for the program on many levels. Hope the ones calling for that are just venting in frustration. However, I do agree with a lot of posters on here that staff changes are badly needed in the off season. On what level is up for debate. Such as: Martinez is not a good secondary coach but a great recruiter. How you deal with that.

As for this season, key injuries starting with Pili in the 1st game and mediocre QB (along with Heup's stubbornness about him, doomed this season. Its over lets move on to next season hopefully starting with Nico in the Vandy game.

At this point it's almost like beating a dead horse. I mean the conversation has come up multiple times over the years, except now there's a slight difference. Manning is now faculty. Most coaches have to teach a class. Is it possible he comes in as a position coach? If so, recruiting likely takes care of itself. In the past he's mentioned he doesn't want to coach; people change over time. IDK, this is something my husband and I were talking about during practice before the game this past weekend.

He should not be on the chopping block this season BUT This season is worse than his first season. I don't care what our past record is against Florida.....no reason to lose to that team this year! They are terrible. Our best win this year is against UK..... or maybe a&m (who fired their coach midseason). He better get some things figured out in a hurry

I will say that one very stupid thing Heupel did was putting in that last minute, unnecessary TD against Missouri last year. It came back to bite him hard this year.

I knew it was a mistake back then.

As we continue to field competitive teams, our recruiting will increase. As our recruiting increases, we will get that depth we need. I've we could get 5-10 of the uncommitted visitors we had on campus, that will be a very positive step in the right direction for us.
