Caldwell Media SessionThis was a good and informative media session with coach Caldwell. She answered a lot of questions that many posters in here have been asking. She spoke about how they are preparing if for example the press isn't working or if they have to go to a half court offense or defense. I like what she said and I'm looking forward to the start of the season...😊

Lots of good stuff. Can't wait to get started. I always appreciate her directness and honesty.

However, emphasizing a "horrendous" early season so much is making me nervous. Esp bc she says her teams "always" do that. Is that OK? KJH got fired for having two horrendous Novembers. I'll give CKC her horrenndous start this year bc everything and everybody is so new. But always stink for half the year? Going to be awfully hard to get good tourney seeding that way. Why is this approach so singularly hard for players to get? Is it worth it? I hope she's exaggerating to set the bar low. Also glad as hell they lightened the schedule.

I did like what she said about preparing for a more traditional half court game. Also kudos to her again for the asst coach hires. She was like well duh, of course I needed SEC expertise. Doesn't seem to have an ego problem.

I also got a little nervous when she said she anticipates a horrendous start. However, CKC does strike me as a perfectionist, so I’m eager to see what her version of horrendous looks like.

A lot of great coaches talk about how unhappy they are and how far the team is from THEIR standard of excellence even if the team’s winning games by 20 plus. I hope that’s what we have in CKC.

Thankfully, our non-conference schedule will mostly be a piece of (cup)cake for us, regardless of how quickly the team takes to her system. Strong contrast to the bloodbath we started the last two seasons with!

zackly
we got 6 games before we play a P5 program
we should be 5-1 or 6-0 at the FSU/Iowa junction
this pre-conference schedule should prove Kim's philosophy of playing cupcakes to get warmed up valid

Watching these practice clips are a much better measuring stick to give a strong idea of the team.
In my opinion, I couldn’t care less about critiquing Coach Caldwell’s press conference.
Tennessee practices look a lot more competitive than I have seen.
They also look to be highly structured.
This team’s roster is much different than last season. Even the players returning look different.
They could’ve played a non-conference schedule like last year’s and had success with these newcomers.
People won’t be able to ignore for long that players like Ruby Whitehorn (vs. Florida St.), Samara Spencer (vs. Alabama, Florida St.), Alyssa Latham (vs. Alabama, Notre Dame), Lazaria Spearman (vs. MS State, NC State, North Carolina), Favor Ayodele (vs. Notre Dame, West Virginia) had outstanding performances to name a few. Favor rarely gets any mention but she is the type of player off the bench that Tennessee has been lacking. She can matchup athletically and can run the floor. This entire new group including Coop and Boyd brings a different dynamic to Tennessee in addition to the returnees.

I would not classify them dangerous. Coach Caldwell’s system along with her staff plus the newcomers is not a good matchup for MTSU. On both ends of the court, I don’t think people are recognizing how skilled players like Spearman, Boyd, Whitehorn, Coop, Spencer, Latham, and Ayodele are in the open court. They are explosive finishers. Think of a team with multiple athletes that can create/finish at the rim like Alexis Dye or Jordan Horston.
In the practices clips alone, I have seen them making instinctive and athletic plays that only a select few were capable of in years past. The new additions are a great compliment to the returnees.

I get from a media perspective "disasterous" was probably not the best choice of words.

But me personally I wasn't alarmed by it...

I took it with context of her extremely high standards.. also more so of sloppiness rather than Ws/Ls... And just percentage stats wise maybe not as efficient or smooth until we get deeper into the year.

All of which makes perfect sense, with new coach, vastly different system, and several new key players.

As long as they improve each game, that is what counts in November and December.

In basketball, late January and February are the time frames that count the most as teams build toward conference tournaments and March Madness.

Last season, Marshall shot worse than 40% on FGs in 40% of their Nov./Dec. games, compared to only 10% of the time in their regular season games in Jan.-Mar. And they didn't shoot above 50% on FGs in their Nov./Dec. games at all, compared to 16% of the time in the Jan.-Mar.

For 3-point %, they shot better than 30% in only 40% of their Nov./Dec. games, compared to 84% of their games in Jan.-Mar.

For fouls, they committed less than 20 fouls only once (10%) in their Nov./Dec. games, compared to 63% of the time in their Jan.-Mar. games.

For offensive rebounds, they got 20 or more zero times in their Nov./Dec. games, compared to 21% of the time in their Jan.-Mar. games.

For steals, they got 10 or more in 60% of their Nov./Dec. games, compared to 80% of their Jan.-Mar. games.

I think all of these are pretty good indicators of Kim's team getting increasingly comfortable shooting at pace, pressing without fouling, and going for offensive boards.

Trav w the numbers as always! Good job.

I wonder what the preseason sched level of competition was like last year at Marshall. How did it compare to the conf competition?

Last year at Marshall was also a situation where it was the first time implementing her system for a team. So understandable there was a learning curve. What concerns me is when Kim says her teams are "always horrendous in Nov Dec". I don't think that would be acceptable around here. Once her approach is wired in that should not be the case. If it is that hard for players to learn, consider changing it. Curious about her teams at Glenville in early season.
