I am not understanding "unproven":

You’re equating division two success with being “proven.”

LSU had the chance to go get a “proven” coach a few years ago. It cost them. $3+ million a year - and they won a national championship in year 2.

We could have done that with several coaches but he didn’t want to spend the money. KY women’s basketball just had back to back 20 loss seasons and they went and hired a “proven” winner who was in last year’s final4. It’s a classic case of you get what you pay for. We paid for “proven” at the D2 level while others paid for “proven” at the D1 level. We will see how that works out for us.

With this hire being made in early April, I rank Tennessee 3rd in the SEC to start the season:

1. South Carolina
2. LSU
3. Tennessee
4. Texas
5. Alabama
LSU looks a little high to me with HVL leaving and Reese going Pro have to wait and see what they do in the portal, but that is two big players gone. Texas should be higher a lot of players back and two top ten recruits coming in. Ole Miss isn't losing much and Kentucky has already upgraded to close to the top five.

Kentucky will be nowhere near a Top 5 team. They will be this year’s Texas A&M.

Ole Miss their best offensive weapon in Davis. I don’t see them being a Top 5 team with all the controversy surrounding recent staff decisions.

My pre-season Top 5 remains intact.

You think he is judged on a program that as best breaks even or a small profit. You do not understand big time college athletics. It is making money and we made more money than ever in history last year with the Lady Vols losing the program money. TBA has not been full for Lady Vol basketball. Yet, he want to win well at everything and Harper was leading us further into oblivion.
If all that matters is profit then we might as well cut all the women's sports and several men's too. What is your argument? It's a "good hire" from White because it ultimately doesn't risk money? There is more history + prestige being gambled here compared to any of the "revenue generating sports", that does not inspire confidence in DW moving forward and absolutely will be a black mark on him if it fails.

We'll see how that works out with Amoore and couple other Va Tech transfers and Blue a top fifty recruit and maybe Da Silva 6'6" Spain player he has a really solid core already. Your top five remains intact as your opinion not the opinion of the majority.

I don't get the comparison to Pat either. The situations back in the 1970's were very different. Women's basketball was an afterthought. Pat was one of the pioneers in making it not be an afterthought - but the truth is, when she was hired, no one cared that she was hired. Many of the women's games were played before the men's game.

This is 2024, women's basketball is not an afterthought - it is a big business. KC is not going to be given years to prove herself. She has to win the first year and be competitive.
Message board standards weren’t existent…net advantage.

Not sure that's not a good thing. If Deion can rebuild an entire Colorado Football team I think we should have bo issue finding 10 players

Colorado went 1-8 in conference play and 4-8 overall. The type of player matters and an unknown coach isn’t pulling the all Americans we need to be relevant again.

"From the beginning, our goal has been to find a dynamic head coach who can restore our women's basketball program to national prominence. Kim Caldwell is the ideal person to lead us," Tennessee athletics director Danny White said in a statement. "Kim has a winning formula that she has successfully implemented everywhere she has coached, with a fast-paced, high-octane offense and pressure defense that has led to remarkable results. In this new era of college sports, it was vital that we found an innovative head coach with a strong track record of winning titles. We are eager to return the Lady Vols to a championship level, and we're confident that Kim Caldwell is the coach who can lead us back to the top."

Duh…2nd!

I just want to thank most of the posters in this thread for providing tremendous entertainment. The ignorance is truly mesmerizing. I have laughed out loud. Posters acting like they have any clue about her lack of ability to be successful. Phenomenonal actual basketball coach. Great system. Recruiting will dictate how high her ceiling is.
Really! Amazing how self-styled "experts" go berserk. DW knows his business.

That’s my point, they don’t care about the LadyVols program.
I used to care and am a donor. I can't even watch the product recently and I tried. Since Holly blew her chance, I would watch and then have to turn it off. It has been a terrible product and I hope to care about it again. Getting rid of Harper, gives me hope. I think not caring would've been just doing the same thing which was not working. They are putting money in all sports so saying they do not care about LV program is wrong. Was just stating a fact. They are not going to fire Danny White over this hire success or failure.

How much glue have you huffed today?

I can make the argument this team should only be ranked ahead of Missouri, Arkansas, Georgia and Florida next year as things stand right now.

What LV fans do not realize is how simple it was for Pat to build a dynasty. How did she do it? Other schools across the country didn't care about women's basketball but Tennessee did. When you're the only fish in the pond then you're the biggest fish in the pond. It was pretty much handed to her because it wasn't really treated as a sport to get serious about elsewhere. When women's basketball began to get major tv coverage then other schools began to change their attitude. The program started downhill under Pat because of this. Hope the new coach does well but LV Basketball will never return to what they were at one time. UT is no longer the only school that cares about women's basketball.

It is simple if you have the mind of a normal person. It is not a black mark to those who make the decision who is the AD. The department made over 200 million in revenue last year. The most ever. It is a business and you do not fire those who don't make money. The Lady Vols lost money this past year and if this doesn't work out and the AD makes over 200 million again, then he is golden. Maybe a black mark for you but not for those who make decisions. Cut all the women's programs then you violate the law and Title IX. Learn how college athletics work before making stupid comments.

Lots of assumptions being made on here that TN had the ability to hire whoever they wanted. Apparently Gottlieb was pursued and there was no amount of money that would have enticed her. So White had a profile for what he wanted and decided Caldwell fit. Nothing wrong with that. Despite what some think, financial resources have limits and the higher the salary a different kind of risk is taken. There is no candidate that would guarantee winning without risks. Try to enjoy the rebuild.

Downhill? Two championships in her last four years and a few top 5 recruiting classes is "downhill"? Get out of here with that utter nonsense. If that's "downhill" then every damn program in the country would have killed to be "going downhill."

It will be interesting to see if she keeps the same style of defensive pressure. The SEC has a lot better ball handlers than she is use to.
Maybe her husband wants his own career instead of working for his wife???
She is right now at a disadvantage as far as recruiting is concerned.

Unlike many of you, my focus is not just making the tourney. I want a coach that can make us a consistent top 10 team and go to the final four in the next 4 or 5 years.
