Knoxville Restaurants

I HEARD they weren’t making enough to pay rent and turn a profit as well as going through several managers in a year

The restaurant business is tough, and I'm sure rent ain't cheap on Gay. Maybe affordable good food just couldn't pay the bills.

We went to Cru in Turkey Creek last weekend, and it has just not been very good the past couple of visits. When your soup appetizer is the highlight of your meal, it's probably not a great dinner. It feels like they are relying more on the wine/bar scene and neglecting the food a bit.

I don't know when the last time you went there that it was good, but their old KM and assistant have been with us for about 6 or 7 months

I'm all for ditching the Cru concept completely and them just putting a Nama on this side of town.

I'm 100% down with this. I have nothing but good to say about Nama.

My family has taken to either eating at Nama or getting sushi to go from Kabuki.

Anyone tried the new Chesapeake's on Parkside Dr? I hear they have a raw bar and grill.

I went there about a month back. Seemed overpriced for what I got, but it tasted good. Got the swordfish filet and a glass of Meiomi for like $40 pre-tax

Was the portion size not big?

Meiomi is good red wine, about $18 a bottle. La Crema is a step up, a little smoother.

That's what I was thinking. It's probably $12+ a glass, so $28 for a good seafood meal seems pretty darn fair.

Another great Pinot, if you can find it, is Diora. Around $20-25 a bottle at stores, but definitely worthwhile

It felt like a $20 meal for which I paid $27

Fresh seafood is expensive in Tennessee. Generally, it costs about as much per pound as USDA Prime beef. If you go to Shrimp Dock for fish and cook your own meal, it will cost you $15+ pp. Honestly, I think a lot of restaurant food is quite fairly priced.

Now, wine/liquor? That's another story. You probably paid as much for a glass of that Meiomi as they paid for the bottle.

Example, for a nice weekend meal I might prepare for my wife and i:

1.5# of fish (Wahoo, Cobia, Trigger, Grouper, etc) @ $20/pound
Pineapple or mango salsa - $6 total for ingredients
Asparagus/mixed fresh vegetables - $5
Basmati rice, coconut milk, almonds - $6

Already at $47, plus other random ingredients from the pantry, gas, charcoal, and TIME.

Disclaimer: I love to cook, especially for my family and friends. So, it's worth it to me to spend the money and time. But, unless you blow it out on drinks, you can eat good food out for not much more than it costs to make your own.

I get it. I do liquor orders multiple times a week. I'm just saying that the quality of the plate was not worth $27. The rice and the broccoli were ok. Nothing to write home about. And the swordfish was good but not great. Perhaps I don't appreciate the freshness as opposed to flash frozen and thawed.

For a great Red wine, try Prisoner

Yes. Prisoner is a very good wine.

It is a very good red blend. At $40 retail, not your every day sipper, though!

I find Dreaming Tree Crush to be a nice, affordable blend.

I'll have to keep an eye out for those two.

Another very nice pinot, although even pricier, is Belle Glos

Been there a couple times now. Can confirm they have a raw bar.

Today’s Easter Buffett was the best I’ve ever had in Knoxville.

Chatted with a friend from WNML about the Bourbon Bird spots. He said that they paid up front for ad packages for football then also basketball. They had their remotes that were supposed to host after their original opening date of September moved to The Alley, which I'm sure most people have noticed has closed. His assumption is that they had some connection in ownership. Wouldn't shock me since there was some level of ownership connection between The Alley and Hurricane's, the former tenant of the Bourbon Bird building. He said he's noticed that work on the building has halted twice. Once around October and once again around January. I don't get to Turkey Creek very often to investigate for myself.

There was a small local chain that was in business when I was at UT. The owner was spending his business income on trips to Florida for himself and cute waitresses that liked to do cocaine with him. Most of the employees paychecks were bouncing and they were told to keep working, that the money would be in there the next pay period. That happened on and off for a few months until the business owner was arrested.

I bet there's a similar situation going on right now, with an owner using the business as his personal piggy bank. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if drugs were at the root of the problem.
