Kruger Headed to Oklahoma

From a fan standpoint, who cares about fundraising if you won't actually go out and spend the money to make a dynamic hire.

I agree. I love the Martin hire, but now was the time to go out and get a proven coach. Tennessee basketball's stock has never been so high. I'm afraid Martin won't put the butts in the seats.

If he wins, people will come. It's that simple.

Hey look, this guys is actually honest!

Kruger on becoming new head coach for Oklahoma: "I would be lying if I didn't say money was a consideration. But it was not only money. It was the challenge and the opportunity,"

Not sure if you all heard Clay Travis' comments yesterday with Wild Will. But UT has a athletics budgets around 40mil greater than Arkansas, and they go out and get Petrino in FB for 3.56mil/yr, maybe the mercernary hire but still a proven commodity, and Mike Anderson for 2.2mil/yr, another proven commidity. And yet we Get DD for 1.8mil/yr, and Martin for 1.3mil/yr. but yet our athletic budget is over 100mil/yr, and AR has a budget of around 60mil/yr. Whats wrong with this picture?

To some, it might indicate that Arkansas is more serious about trying to win than Tennessee.

Coach Cal was at Memphis and UMass both mid majors, But yes UK can go out and get a BCS coach.

IIRC, their coaches before Cal came from the Big XII, the SEC, the Big East, and the Southwest Conference. I don't think it is quite fair to compare the hiring of Martin to the hiring of Calipari, either, despite the fact that both moved from schools not in the BCS.

If hatvol didn't bring up Kruger, 90% of this forum would be wondering why this thread was created. Tennesseefan07, have you ever had an original thought?

Kruger is a good coach, but he wouldn't have guaranteed W's any more than Martin does. I don't know why that is so assumed. There are only a few who guarantee as much and Lon isn't one of them.

Tennessee got a good coach guys. Name me a current SEC men's coach that was at a BCS school, before coming to their current school?

Mike Anderson
Trent Johnson
While Calipari did not come from a BCS school, he had taken two teams to the Final Four, previously.
Anthony Grant had won at least one NCAA tournament game before.

Martin...NIT.

Do you see the difference?

Expect him to be booed out of Manhattan, KS next year. He left them and said that its impossible to win there.

Unless you are Bobby Huggins, or playing with Huggins talent, it is.

With Pullen gone, K-State is going to have a tough year or thirty.

Great point. Look how awful the records of Jack Hartman and Lon Kruger were in Manhattan. Jack Gardner and Tex Winter really sucked it up, too.

We are also 1 of a handful of schools that actually made money. Call it what you want but the bottom line is the main focus.

FWIW, Pitino left the NBA for KY.

Going way back in the vault for that, Hat. You are correct, twenty years ago, K-State basketball was relevant.

Sans Beasley, Walker, and Pullen, K-State basketball will return to the position it occupied for the past twenty years: irrelevancy.

Not all that disappointed that UT didn't go after him harder. I think it'll work out ok with Martin

Kruger is getting long in the tooth and never stays anywhere a great length of time. He has been to 1 Final Four his entire career and was at 2 recruiting hotbeds of Illinois & Florida. It's not like he has this huge resume. Granted it's bigger than Martin's and he is a good coach but I still say there is more potential upside to our hire even if it is on the cheap. Dooley was cheaper than Petrino but he hasn't won anything at Arkansas yet either. With time both our coaches will be successful hires.

How many schools were going after Kruger hard?

$1.3M is not exactly "on the cheap". We offered Cuonzo ten times what he was making at Missouri St. Why?

You're right $1.3 isn't exactly cheap. Less expensive than others might have been a better choice of words. Other schools may have been after Martin or that might be how much it took to get him here with penalties looming.

This is Calapari's first final four, assuming this one isn't vacated in a year or two.

I really can't wrap my head around the love for Kruger. Maybe someone can help me out. Take out the Final 4 run and his resume is littered with 18-12 seasons, pre-UNLV.

OU Broke out the checkbook and brought in him in at $2.2M...they will suck again next year but Kruger will eventually build a winner there
