He just became the first media member I've ever heard tell the Doug Dickey-Kevin Stallings-Tim Floyd story on the air. Solid.

Doug interviewed Floyd for the UT job, and Doug walked out of the room to answer the phone for another interview. The reason Floyd hates UT to this day...

I think...

what's the story?
I've posted it here multiple times, but here's the Reader's Digest version. Dickey was at Stallings house to offer him the Tennessee job after Kevin O'Neill left. The parties had agreed in principle to a deal and were working on the logistics of Stallings telling his Illinois State team he was leaving and flying to Knoxville for an introductory press conference. At that point, Tim Floyd called Doug Dickey. Instead of telling Floyd (who was simply using UT to drive up the price on his raise at Iowa State) that he had already found his coach, Dickey went into another room in Stallings' house and had a long conversation. That enraged Stallings and killed the deal. That's why he hates Tennessee so much.

Seems understandable (for Stallings to be mad) and was an idiotic thing for Dickey to do.

Especially when everyone who knew the first thing about college basketball was aware that Floyd was just using UT as leverage.

Good, I'm glad. I wouldn't want that Kevin from the office look-a-like coaching at Tenn anyways. Hate that a**hole.

That story defines Doug Dickey's stewardship of UT basketball. He has Kevin Stallings signed up, with Tim Floyd at least feigning interest, and ends up hiring Jerry Green.

I've never gotten the impression you respected Stallings.

Of course, that's the hiring cycle that also gave us "There's no way I can hire the coach from Oral Roberts. My fans will never stand for that."
