Of course, that's the hiring cycle that also gave us "There's no way I can hire the coach from Oral Roberts. My fans will never stand for that."

Idiot. What did he have to lose after Houston, O'Neill, & Green?

You have to understand how badly Dickey hated basketball. Even an idiot like him could see the talent O'Neill was assembling and realize UT was about to hit the big time in basketball. So, he did things like screw Kevin on Isiah Victor's eligibility and make KO remove Ray Mears from the bus to Georgia because he knew O'Neill would eventually say "To Hell with it." Then, he hired the basketball equivalent of a substitute teacher to sabotage the whole thing.

What the hell? I'm a younger fan, so I have no idea why Dickey would hate basketball that much. I know he wasn't a fan, but that's just crazy.

I've posted it here multiple times, but here's the Reader's Digest version. Dickey was at Stallings house to offer him the Tennessee job after Kevin O'Neill left. The parties had agreed in principle to a deal and were working on the logistics of Stallings telling his Illinois State team he was leaving and flying to Knoxville for an introductory press conference. At that point, Tim Floyd called Doug Dickey. Instead of telling Floyd (who was simply using UT to drive up the price on his raise at Iowa State) that he had already found his coach, Dickey went into another room in Stallings' house and had a long conversation. That enraged Stallings and killed the deal. That's why he hates Tennessee so much.

Thanks for this version Hat, but why did I feel like I needed to take a crap while reading it.....

oh wait! :whistling:

Dickey was always pissed that UT fans embraced Mears more warmly than him when they were both here. That's why he always treated basketball like a second class citizen. He was hellbent to make sure no UT football coach was ever less popular than the basketball coach again.

You sure this doesn't stem from your hatred of Vandy and all things, events, and people in and around Nashville?

Had Stallings been hired rather than Jed, the basketball program wouldn't have seen the Buzz era.

Worked out for better for UT. I enjoyed the Green-Peterson years more than having to listen to Stallings cry all the time.

O'Neill struck up a friendship with Mears upon arriving at UT. That immediately ticked Dickey off. Kevin was going to take Coach Mears on the team bus to the game in Athens. Dickey showed up and told him to get Mears off the bus. He cited Mears having sued the university over the use of the phrase 'Big Orange Country" as his reason. Dickey later made cracks to his cronies about having done it just because he could and made jokes about Coach Mears' psychological issues. That got back to O'Neill and was one of the final straws in his leaving.

I don't recall hearing this story. That's pathetically idiotic.

For all their faults, at least Pearl and Hamilton brought Mears back into the spotlight.

I thought this was pretty universally known. Knoxville media hid from it?

Thats pretty awesome. Here I was thinking RC Johnson was the worst AD in history. I didnt know about this guy though

Hes currently digging a hole big enough to compete with the Grand Canyon.

Don't kid yourself. If RC, Dickey, and Hamilton are all from the same pool of candidates, RC is still going last every time.

Lucky for you guys, RC will be retiring in 2012 with Raines right there too. On the bright side, no matter who you hire, they can't really do much worse than the current establishment.

I think the vast majority of the media covering UT is petrified of saying anything that might get them in hot water with the powers that be.

I've also heard that Dickey basically arranged it with C.M Newton to where they could turn the Tommy Bowl into Rupp South.

Hat really does know what he's talking about on some ocassions. I'm not sure but I was thinking there was somebody else there to carry on a conversation with Stallings while Dickey was on the phone with Floyd and Stallings overheard part of Dickey's conversation. I'm thinking it was U.T. president(at the time) Joe Johnson. My time frame might be off but I'm an old guy and my memory fades for days at a time. You think Stallings hates Tennessee or Pearl, or maybe both?
