Problem is we as fans don’t get much, if any, access to their bad film. Highlights are great but tell an incomplete story.
It’s a heavily biased and imperfect science, but unfortunately recruiting services/rankings are just about all we have to fill the gaps.
100%.
Plus...most of us don't
really know what to look for...if we're being honest. We may think we do based off what our pappy taught us...but in reality, compared to modern techniques and considering what a player's job was on every particular play, only but a handful really do. I trust
@HankHill and that's about it on here. I trusted JAV on 247, he was an NFL scout, but he hasn't been around much lately.
But your point is huge, regardless. The negatives matter as much as the positives and we'll never see them on a highlight reel.
And then there are massively varying competition levels on top of all the rest.
Jmo I still look at (serious) P5 offers first. Then recruiting rankings...yeah they'll miss on plenty of individuals, just as college staffs and even NFL front offices do all...the...time...but there's a reason the Blue Chip Ratio is a thing...over hundreds or thousands of players each year, they do correlate to success at a very meaningful degree. I would put message board "highlight reel dissection" a distant third. It would mean guys on a message board know more than million dollar college coaching staffs and services...and, even in the rare instances of being true, those people would be hired away immediately by said entities...see: Austin Burlage aka Power_T_Tape.
Fwiw this isn't directed toward anyone, just general thoughts.
