It's a month until signing day and we've had a coach for only two weeks.

Do you honestly think we are going to sign a top five class right now?

We will get some studs, but we will also have to roll the dice and gamble some. It's the nature of these type of classes.

One thing about butch is his lack of clear vision in his scheme's and program. I have talked to a lot of football people that have echoed that to me. The conversation started with, "what do you think of Butch?" ... And ended with "the things he does schematically and the things you see going on in his program just doesn't make sense to me."

So are they knocking Butch's scheme in general or arguing that he didn't recruit the right guys to actually fit said scheme?

I will be happy with a 15-20 class

What's tiring is rehashing the frustration with Butch, Kiffin, Dooley, etc. Those guys are now history and all the complaining about them now won't change a thing. If living in the past and all the accompanying frustrations makes you feel better, that's your prerogative but seems like it would be more productive looking at what the new staff is doing and anticipating the improvements we all hope they bring to the field next fall.

I'm not the one who made the original comment. I only responded that it's ridiculous for people to defend Butch for not offering talented players because they might be difficult pulls. But thanks for the advice I guess...

Bruin, no one knows how good or bad CJP will be, but he is our coach, and that won't change any time soon. At this point, are you unwilling to give him time to show us what direction he'll go? I'm not unlike you. I look at reality and see where we stand as a program. I make it a point to mark where we are compared to our competition. And yes, the task ahead is daunting. But nothing ever gets accomplished without trying. If you don't believe it can happen, it never has a chance to happen. All we have right now are possibilities ahead of us. I assume you want Tennessee to be great again, so why fight hope?

Huh?

I am all in and behind him. I am just saying he doesn't have to recruit better than Butch to win here. He just needs to be better in other areas. My only point

Landing Peterson, Copeland and Griffin would give us a shot at the top 10. Just those 3. There will be more of their caliber that we get in the mix with by February. It’s already happening.

I will Jump for joy if we get any of those. I would guess 1 which would be great

Peterson has already said we lead. Griffin took UCLA off his Twitter after visiting us. Copeland looks promising but he’s the longest shot of the three.

I expect us to get 2 of those, in addition to a couple top 100 guys we haven’t even heard of. 5 star offers are starting to pop up all over the place with this staff.

I agree, it's as pointless to defend him as it is to criticize him at this point. I'm just ready to see the difference the new staff has on the team and it's going to be a loooong offseason this year waiting to see them on the field. Here's hoping for a return to significance, and sooner rather than later.

You mean like the guys from Clemson and UGA who didn't waste their time with Mays because he was the child of a former UT player, grew up in Knoxville and had previously been committed to UT. Butch got 4+ million dollars a year. It was his F'ing job to waste his time and make sure no stone was left unturned.

So, were they recruiting Mays hard when he was committed to UT for 2 years?

Many complained that Butch gave out too many offers. So which is it?

The original OP was right. Butch had faults, but recruiting wasn't one of them.

I think the point of the criticisms now are to make a point with those who were blind to him for about 4 years. They still need to be reminded... Hopefully they've learned to keep the standard high and not go "kneejerk" defensive for the HC in every instance.

You have a very argumentative posting style. You don't come across as "all in and behind him." But I do agree the biggest difference we need to see is developing the players we get. And shooting for high rated recruits that fit the system, no matter who believes we don't have a chance, is never a bad thing. You never have a chance if you don't throw your hat in the ring.

Yes and no. He got some highly rated players. He raised the overall talent of the roster. But he never recruited effectively to need. Even going back to the first couple of years there were conversations here speculating that he would need to back up and fill some voids. He never really did. UT never had quality depth at several positions. The most glaring is LB.

They came hard after he decommitted and after Cade showed Interest but don't let your interest in blaming everything on Butch get in the way.

Not a twitter person, but I was told Copeland has been showing us love on there. Is that false info?

What’s wrong with blaming Butch for everything? He sucked. Worst season in UT football history was 2017. 0-8 in the SEC. You been paying attention?

Sorry I was thinking about the other CB. I think we get 2 of those

The point was, until these kids sign their LOI, time is never wasted trying to recruit blue chip talent to your program.

As a fan, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

But a fan isn't a coach and we're not privy to all of the details that factor into who gets offered and who doesn't. A lot of communication happens off-the-record through a player's high school coach or some other adult close to him.

If Tennessee's coach is being told we have zero chance, it might not be in our best interest to offer. It sets us up for public rejection and potentially scares-off other talented players we do have a shot at getting. You can't offer every blue chip player out there. Not even the most successful programs do that. Some players might not be seen as a fit for off-field reasons. There's a lot that goes into it.

Not sure the depth at LB was as much as a problem as development. Bryant and Bates didn't do anything, and Johnson was moved to TE.

I don't blame everything on Butch. You just made a really ignorant point and I called you on it. Don't stress. Tomorrow's another day.

Yep. And as I said, we can blame Butch for a lot of things but he worked hard at recruiting.

And my argument is he really didn’t work that hard. He landed 1 consensus 5 star while he was here and that recruit was a legacy. Fulmer used to get 5 stars all the time. Remember, this is Tennessee.
