Lady Vols Soccer ⚽️ SEC TOURNAMENT 11/3-11/10

Adding insult to bracket injury… TN is the only team in the tournament with 20 wins. 🙃 20-2-0 just incredible. Why stop now. I guess we should just go ahead and win it all.

Don't see why not...we've beaten every ranked team we've faced except for Arkansas at the start of the SEC season and we got our payback for that. That loss to Vandy still gets my goat.

Jmo, but this team seems as good if not better than the team that lost in the elite 8 three years ago.

I agree with you. I think we have a shot at winning it all this year. We likely won't due to our lack of experience playing at such a high level, but I think we have both the talent and confidence to make a strong run.

Well, I've seen enough. I think we can take either of these two teams. Wake would be easier but I think we could get MIch on their heels with our pressure and keep them there. They are a little physical, but if we have the same official as today that shouldn't be a problem.

I do believe other teams will use the Vandy model and be very physical with us as WSU was today. Everybody has that video by now and saw what Vandy did, and was allowed to do by the official, to beat us.

No. 6 UT Beats No. 15 WSU In NCAA Second Round, 2-0

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Two first-half goals gave No. 6 UT a 2-0 win over No. 15 Washington State on Friday, advancing the Vols to the NCAA Round of 16.

The shutout was Tennessee's 13th of the season, setting a new single-season record and extending UT's streak of holding non-conference opponents scoreless to nine games.

Tennessee (20-2-0), a No. 3 seed, was just the fourth team to score multiple goals on WSU (14-3-4) this season.

Freshmen Taylor Huff and Jordan Fusco found the net for UT, while junior Lindsey Romig made six saves to record the clean sheet.

"Congrats to Washington State on a fantastic season. They're a very well-coached team. They were a handful," said Tennessee head coach Brian Pensky. "But credit to our team - we're pretty good. And we're pretty tough. Our quality was phenomenal today, and we're elated to be moving on. We got two goals from freshmen and a third straight shutout from Romig and our back five."

The Vols started the match hot, outshooting the Cougs 8-4 to go up 2-0 in the first half while taking five corners to their one.

Huff got UT's first chance of the game in the 10th minute, driving into the box and getting a shot off from 12 yards out, but a WSU defender got a foot on it, deflecting it wide.

Washington State countered in the 17th minute when Elyse Bennett broke behind the UT defense to go one-on-one with Romig, but a diving save by Romig kept the match scoreless.

Seven minutes later Fusco put the Vols out in front, placing a shot into the left corner of the net from 10 yards out off a perfectly placed entry pass from Mackenzie George.

Jaida Thomas nearly added a second to the scoreboard three minutes later, getting an open look from close range but missing wide right.

UT went up 2-0 in the 33rd minute when Huff beat the keeper low and to the right off a cross into the box from Hannah Zaluski.

Zaluski almost made it 3-0 before the break, blasting a header across the goal off a ball served in, but missing just wide.

The Cougs came out swinging in the second half, blasting a shot toward the far corner from the top of the box a minute in, but the Vols got a friendly bounce off the post to keep the match 2-0.

Fusco got another shot on frame from close range in the 59th minute, but Nadia Cooper was there for the save.

Cooper came up with another save in the 80th minute, diving to prevent a would-be goal by George. Hannah Tillett got a look off the rebound, but a WSU defender got a toe out to redirect it out of bounds.

The Vols held Washington State without a shot in the final 10 minutes, advancing to the NCAA Round of 16 with a 2-0 win.

UP NEXT: The Vols will play at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday against the winner of ninth-ranked No. 2 seed Michigan vs. Wake Forest. The match will be free to watch via a BTN+ livestream.

NCAA HISTORY: Tennessee is making its 13th overall NCAA Tournament appearance since 2001. UT is 16-10-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 7-2 in NCAA Second Round matches. Sunday will be the Vols' seventh appearance in the NCAA Round of 16.

VS. RANKED TEAMS: The win improves the Vols' record against ranked opponents to 5-0 on the season. Tennessee previously took victories over #5 Arkansas, #11 Auburn, #19 South Carolina, and #21 Ole Miss.

STINGY DEFENSE: The Vols have tallied three straight shutouts and haven't given up a single goal to a non-conference opponent through nine matchups outside of SEC play.

Vols with a big win today over a good Washington State team. We scored twice against a team that had given up only 1 goal to Stanford, 1 to Southern Cal and 0 to UCLA, as I recall. And we could have scored 3 or 4 goals. It's crazy but, after Southern Cal's loss to Penn State, there is not a single Pac10 team left in tourney--first time since 1998 that that conference hasn't had a team in the last 16.

We were very good in the first half. We survived a breakaway strike, thanks to an excellent Romig save, and mostly controlled play after that. Our two freshmen mids put two balls in the net, and those goals proved the difference. George had a great through pass on the first goal by Fusco. The second half was somewhat ragged as we worked to deter a more aggressive Washington State and hold onto our lead. And we did. We even had some counter-attacking opportunities, and my biggest nit from this game is that our decision-making on two or three open-field counters in the 2nd half was suspect. Thomas had a chance to make a centering pass when we had a 3 on 2 break but chose to take a weak shot instead; I think she did that a couple of times. We needed a bit more poise. And Ellis had a good scoring chance that she didn't put away. We also have to give credit to the Wa. State keeper as she made a nice safe on George in the 2nd half. Speaking of keepers, Romig is playing with more confidence--and Pensky confirmed as much after the match. There have been times when I haven't been all that impressed by her--and she was a big-time recruit--but she's taken her play up a notch in recent weeks--and there's no better time to do it. We obviously need her to keep playing well.

Watching the game, Rain did not seem herself. She seemed a bit lethargic compared to the way she usually plays. According to Pensky, she's had a touch of the flu--which would explain it. Here's hoping she's feeling better by Sunday.

This is the first UT team to win 20 games. Let's keep it going. Michigan is a good team but a team we certainly can beat. It won't be easy, playing at their place, but this team can do it.

Thomas can be a bit of a ball hog and occasionally she does so at the cost of an almost certain goal. This is an area of concern as it's not likely to change unless Coach P has a few quite words with Jaida.

Don't get me wrong, I love Jaida and always want her to do well but sometimes even the best players need to be made aware of what they are doing before it becomes a team issue.
