Lady Vols Soccer ⚽️ SEC TOURNAMENT 11/3-11/10

Wow: That's a shocker. FSU has been the best program in women's collegiate soccer for the last decade--and Krikorian has proved himself to be
the best coach. His teams have not often been great in attack--but they've been nearly impossible to score on. Last year's NCAA tournament was classic FSU: In the last four matches of the tourney--3rd round, Quarterfinals, Semis, and Final, FSU gave up 0 goals. Won the first three of those matches by 1-0 scores, then won the title game against BYU on PKs after a scoreless draw. He's been a pretty classy guy as well, from what I've observed. I can hear a big sigh off relief coming from Chapel Hill, Durham and Charlottesville--three outstanding ACC programs that have had to take a back seat to FSU for several years. Heck, maybe a sigh of relief from everybody...Somebody on soccer board said that he is not retiring, which could mean that he is taking a professional job somewhere--maybe NWSL at some point, maybe a national team. He won't lack for offers.

I’m glad Pensky received the extension last week.

@turbovol do you think FSU players will stay or leave to other programs?

I doubt any players leave now because everyone, including incoming freshmen, have signed their scholarship players--and once you've done that, I believe, you are committed to play for at least one year. Next year, after they've played under the new coach, you might see a player or two leave for whatever reason. That's a possibility.

One FSU fans thinks that Krikorian wasn't happy with the FSU athletic department--didn't think the program was getting the financial support it deserves. He noted that the coach did not thank the athletic director--who is relatively new--or the school administration in his resignation letter.

He will be a tough act to follow. The next coach will have to work very hard and very well just to come close to maintaining the program's current level. Two premier West Coast programs--UCLA and USC---just hired new coaches, and many in the collegiate soccer community were critical of the fact that both schools hired individuals who were only assistant coaches--no head-coaching experience. And it's true: You have a big-name program, you really, in most cases, should hire somebody with a proven track record. (That's how our women's basketball program got into serious trouble.) But soccer people pointed out that the salary for the soccer coach at those schools was not good enough to attract a proven coach, given the high cost of living in LA. Both schools also apparently wanted to hire female coaches, which seriously limited the pool of candidates. (USC apparently wanted to hire the Michigan coach, but she turned down the offer.) FSU should be able to hire a more experienced coach given the much lower cost of living in Florida. I could see them hiring somebody who's had success at the mid-major level and is ambitious. We shall see.

Sounds like women’s soccer is thriving.

Oh, the Women's Euro Championship this summer in England is going to be cracking good. So many strong teams. I'm a longtime fan of The Netherlands men's and women's national teams. The Dutch have a great tradition of playing attractive, attacking soccer, and they have a great reputation for turning out very technical and talented young players who make their way to bigger clubs outside of Holland. The Ajax academy is legendary. The Dutch women are the defending Euro champs (and also last World Cup runnerup)--and they've got some star talent (Miedema, Martens, Groenen, Van de Donk, to name four)--but Spain has become very good and will be a major threat. Barcelona is the best women's club in the world now--has been for two years--and many of Barca's players are on the Spanish NT, so they have a lot of natural chemistry on the pitch.

Sarina Wiegman, the successful coach of the The Netherlands NT, was hired away by England, which also has a lot of talent, as do France, Sweden and Germany. (The Dutch had a dramatic semifinal win over Sweden at the Tokyo World Cup, and Sweden should have won the Olympics but lost in the final to surprise Canada.) Any of those teams could win it, as could Norway or maybe even Italy or Denmark, though they'd be longer odds. It's weird seeing Wiegman coaching England. I presume she got a lot of money to take that job--but she will be under a lot of pressure to win it. England have a lot of talent, are playing at home--and English soccer fans are rather desperate for a Euro or WC championship--men or women. Meanwhile, Mark Parsons, an Englishman who had a lot of success coaching the Portland Thorns in the NWSL, is now the coach of The Netherlands. The last Euro was held in The Netherlands and the fans, as always, were great. They've got an amazing fan base that like to have fun.

Yep: Not good at all when you are new to the league and trying to show your talent/skill set. I assume they haven't even been training....
