Lady Vols Soccer ⚽️ SEC TOURNAMENT 11/3-11/10

Didn’t Katie Cousins play in a cold climate before going to LA? Wonder what she prefers?

Very interested to see if Cousins gets some playing time with LA, and if so, how she fares in the NWSL. She was apparently good/very good in the Icelandic league--but the NWSL is surely a significant step up in competition both with respect to getting playing time with your team and playing well against opponents. She is a talented defensive midfielder--reads the game well, uses her body well and is strong on the ball and a good passer. One negative, IMO, is her pace: She is quite short, with short legs, and as a result doesn't get around the field quite as quickly as taller players with longer strides. And she's not going to win any headers, either. I'll be rooting for her--and Vignola, of course, who I think has a better chance of getting minutes and maybe even starting, though I'm not very familiar with LA's roster.

How many players can be on a NWSL roster?

The 12 NWSL teams are spread across the United States. Each club is allowed a minimum of 20 players on their roster, with a maximum of 22 players (26 including supplemental players) allowed at any time during the season.

Tonight is the first match. Hopefully we will get to see a couple of LVFL.
Katie Cousins & MA Vignola

Damn: I'd like to watch AC play but I'm not going to get another subscription to do it. I used to watch a fair amount of the NWSL when the games were show on ESPN or streamed for free, but I"m not going to pay. I will monitor team's twitter feed to see if the Vols get some PT.

Neither in the lineup tonight.

Maybe they'll get in late. Nearly all of the AC players have considerably more pro and, in particular, NWSL experience than Vignola and Cousins; that's the challenge for the two former Vols. Two or three of AC's starters tonight, while having been in the NWSL for a few years, were mostly bench players for their previous clubs as opposed to starters--but even so they have trained and played at higher level than our two who only played in the Icelandic league for one /two years. I also noticed that AC played a 3-4-3 formation tonight: I don't know what formations their teams in Iceland played, but I'm pretty sure Vignola and Cousins are more comfortable in a 4-3-3. That's certainly what they played at Tennessee. The difference has to do with different roles/responsibilities for midfielders and defenders. I feel a bit more optimistic about the athletic Vignola sticking on the roster and in the league than Cousins. Katie has outstanding soccer qualities--she was a starter on the U.S. Under 20 National team a few years ago, and acquitted herself nicely--but her lack of height and pace might work against her at this level. We'll have to see--I"m just speculating.

No, they weren’t on the subs list either.

I see that Savannah McCaskill was a starting midfielder tonight for AC--and scored the club's first-ever goal, as you may have seen. McCaskill played for our SEC rival South Carolina (from maybe 2014 to 2018) and was an excellent player for that team--talented forward. I've never been a big fan of hers because she was a major diver in college--meaning you could count on her to fall down in the box at the least bit of contact, and she often won penalty kicks by doing so. When she was a senior, South Carolina won a bunch of games late by 1-0 scores because McCaskill--who was usually the stoutest player on the field--would take a exaggerated tumble in the box after getting touched and persuade the ref that she'd been fouled, and SC would score and win. Annoying. She got warned about diving early on after she joined the NWSL. She is a talented player, to be sure--but AC is now the fourth NWSL team she's been on in her four- or five-year career.

Oh, wow--didn't notice that. I saw that in 2020 teams could have a max of 20 players on their game-day rosters, but it had previously been 18. Which means of course that if there are 28 players in training, 8 will not suit up. Not sure what the limit is for this year. In any case, may not be a great sign for our Vols. It's possible that one or both could be cut by the start of the regular season, as teams are often making roster changes to improve the club. Hope not!
