Lady Vols Softball Team Game Thread week 5

We should sweep OM but with us you never can tell. Seggern looked lost at the plate tonight. Love her defense and hope the offense with power continues to get better. If we cant sweep these guys we are in trouble IMHO!

We strike out too much, especially with runners on base. Karen W. mentioned it after the game. We struck out 8 times in the game--too many. We had the same problem last year. With a runner in scoring position, you at least have to get the bat on the ball--put it in play and make the opponent play defense. But the extra base hits were encouraging.

Karen said in the post-game interview that she was really pleased with how Moss pitched. She's the pitching coach not me but I'd like to see less balls and less walks. She didn't overthrow as much tonight and only gave up the two hits. Let's see what Arnold can do tomorrow.

She drives me bananas with her control but is understandable with the number of home runs hit off her...doesn't want to get pitches too good to hit.

As others have indicated ,was encouraged by hitting last nite .Course you have to take into account who they were hitting against ....but still it was nice to see a little spark in the long balls hit to or over the wall.Need to sustain against some good pitchers.

Am going to Williamsburg,Va to watch my grandson play golf in a tourney ( attends University of Virginia ) so you guys and gals pull them thru the next two games against Ole Miss.

The Ole Miss pitcher was a little different a lot of off speed stuff had our batters fooled. I kept thinking they would figure it out and a couple did. If she pitches again we should do a lot better when she throws up that soft stuff.

I didn't get to watch the game but several people have mentioned the off speed pitches. Sometimes when a pitcher is throwing so many you just have to start sitting on them until you rake a few and force them to throw fewer of them. I still have nightmares about Taryne Mowatt in the championship series throwing so many changes. As the series went on she threw more and more, to the point that in the final game she would sometimes throw 3 in a single at bat. And we never adjusted. We couldn't pull the trigger on it and it had us late on any hard stuff. And then I read this morning that Mowatt is now the Ole Miss pitching coach so I'd guess the change is a big part of their pitching strategy.

It is and the first pitcher threw it often!!! Still her speed was listed from 59 to 63 MPH. Not fast by todays standards. Matty was 65 to 68. I expect Arnold is going to be around 62 to 67.

I forgot she was their pitching coach

I saw the Ole Miss pitcher throw a number of first-pitch changeups--and there is no better time to guess changeup, or off-speed, and sit on it, then the first pitch, or early in the count. We seemed not to be expecting it and took it--for strikes, usually.

Seggern had a rough time at the plate--but she was smart to call our runner safe at the plate on that attempted force out that the Miss. catcher botched. Seggern saw that he foot was not on the plate--not even that close, really--and I think her signaling safe got the attention of the home plate umpire. I think he may have been ready to call our runner out on the assumption that her foot was or would be on the plate but was sort of alerted to take a close look by Seggern. I'm speculating--he might have seen it himself--but Seggern helped, and that proved to be a big run at the time.

She is playing at UT-Martin

I think she would have played a lot for us. I know the family and she is going to UTM. They have a very senior laden team and she does not play very much unless something changed recently. She could have been that additional pitcher ( left hander) that we very much needed. Would have helped at first base as well. She attended summer orientation but changed her mind at the last minute for personal reasons. She is a great kid who had been committed since 8th or 9th grade. She left the Weeklys hanging very very late which I do not think is very good at all. I was told that we went after Brake because of her not coming and we know how that turned out. Parents not happy with the move either!

She's not playing much for UT Martin but she would have played a lot for us? I don't understand that. She has 5 at bats in 27 games for them and she hasn't pitched an inning. If she was good enough to be our 3rd pitcher she would be getting some innings at Martin and she's not. They have 5 different girls that have pitched and she's not one of them. On the roster they list her as OF/1B. Maybe there is something I'm missing, possibly an injury early in the year and she hasn't been able to play after those 5 at bats?

I had totally forgotten about Kaitlyn Martin. She was a great player in HS at South Gibson. Had a lot of elite offers including Florida.

No maybe I was not clear enough. I believe that she would have got some at bats for us and played some at first base. We still have not settled on a first baseman this late in the year although there are 2 pretty good candidates trying to win it. I never said she would be our 3rd pitcher, I said she would be a left handed pitcher available if needed. Lord knows we need all the practice we can get hitting off lefties. She pitched throughout her career in summer, high school off and on as well as playing 1st base. As I said UTM is a senior team and they have pretty good chemistry like they are. She does not want to pitch but can and has before. UTM was set without her and since she is in that local area they accepted her since they had recruited her hard knowing she was UTK bound. She went there knowing what the deal was and was valedictorian of her HS so that is where she is now. As I said personal problems so I don't know that she will play 4 years or 1 myself. The Weeklys do not normally want their pitchers to be every day players who hit and play defense. They also are reluctant to even use more that 3. Last year because of their lack of getting any stud pitcher about 3 years in a row we used everybody that we could and if we had not had Rainey Gaffin who was a player first and pitcher last had been their. I saw Kaitlyn being the same type player. JMHO!

Scarlett is catching today and batting 8th please be good McSwain today please be good McSwain today :crossfingers::crossfingers:

just got done watching last nights replay, nice finish to the game Lady Vols :)

I'm ready for some softball now :)

Arnold loses concentration so often it is unbelievable. Walks 90% of the time in the 1st inning by both our pitchers.
