Lady Vols Softball Team Game Thread week 7

Going to the bottom of the 7th. Geer has had a frustrating series. Announcers just said she has gone 0-2, 0-4 and 0-4 this weekend. Left runners in scoring position at least twice today.

Vols have mentally ended this game and UK's still playing. One UK runner in and two more in scoring position. One out.

McSwain with another circus catch to end the game. What a weekend she's had! Stellar sweep, ladies!

And great play to end a dominant series for Tennessee. They needed this sweep going into their ridiculously difficult schedule to end the season.

3 hours and 13 minute game today but that is fine we won again another 3 game sweep and the winning streak still going.

Swept UK on the road! Next up is Tennessee State at home
on Tuesday for a doubleheader might get changed to a single game...and Bama at home for the weekend

Patrick Murphy is a really good guy.

In the LSU game last night Murphy gave a shout-out to South Carolina's Dawn Staley for winning the basketball championship and bringing another national championship trophy to the Southeastern Conference. I think that was pretty classy of him to do that. I have heard Ralph speak very highly of Murphy, but then again Ralph speaks highly of everybody LOL.

I don't know what it is with Scarlet. Just when you think she's run out of chances and is going to be on the bench for the rest of the season, she has a series like this. One thing she had going for her was the lefty pitching of Kentucky, another thing is that I think she's better in the outfield then she is at catcher, and the last thing she has going for her is Ralph and Karen's confidence in her. They stuck with her when I might not have.

Kentucky scored four runs today. I kind of thought they would get their bats going and score. Even though our pitching has been okay it hasn't been anything spectacular. If this team can have its pitching going and it's bats going at the same time, they will be very difficult to beat.

So, does the win today makes it a 14 or 15 win game straight?
Whatever it may be it's awesome to behold that many.

The announcers today went on at length but how young Kentucky's team was and they did mention that Tennessee had a young team also. I thought I would take a look and compare the youth of each team's roster.

Kentucky's top 12 players includes three freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors, and two seniors.

Tennessee's top 12 players includes four freshmen, four sophomores, 3 juniors, and one senior.

Assigning a points value of 1 point for freshman, two points for sophomores, 3 points for juniors, and four points for seniors Kentucky has 28 points and Tennessee has 25 points. Tennessee is a tad bit younger than Kentucky.

Although I haven't analyzed every team Tennessee has faced, Tennessee has been younger than every team they faced that I've looked at.

Any idea on why Holcomb didn't play in this series -- other than a pinch hit in game 1? Sorry if I missed discussion on this.

Prince and Rethlake for KY are both lefties and IMO Ralph wanted another right-handed hitter in the lineup. Also Holcomb is not a power hitter and TN needs more power and less slappers.

Yep and got to give SM being a right hand hitter a chance to do what she did this whole series. I have been hard on SM but she has took a licking and kept on ticking. Proud for her to hit the ball hard all series looped swing or not!!

Dave Baker, while usually a good play by play guy, really has a hard time playing neutral when calling Kentucky games. A glaring example was a dust up last year between UK and Auburn coaching staffs where Auburn contested a substitution. Dave went on and on about it fervently against Myers position in a way that the play by play guy should not engage IMO. Cleaning up the "homerism" on SEC+ games is one of the items the SECN and ESPN need to work on.

SEC standings:

Florida ..................12-1
Texas A&M ............9-2
Tennessee ............9-3
Alabama ..............10-5
Auburn .................8-4
LSU ......................8-4
Kentucky ................5-7
Missouri ..................4-7
Mississippi State ......4-8
Arkansas ................4-11
Ole Miss .................3-9
South Carolina .......3-11
Georgia .................2-9

Tennessee's goal is to finish in the top 4 and get a first round bye in the SEC tournament. With only two reliable pitchers, having to play four days in a row is too difficult IMO to win out.

There are 12 games left - Alabama, at LSU, Florida, and at aTm. I think the worst Tennessee will do is to go 3-9 in those 12 games and finish 12-12 in the conference. Doing so would give them a 6 or 7 seed IMO.

About the best Tennessee can do is 6-6 in those 12 games giving them a 15-9 conference record. Doing so would give them a 5 maybe a 6 seed. To get a top 4 seed, Tennessee has to take the series against 3 of the 4 teams and win 1 in the other, (or hope two of the other teams slip up in other conference games). That would give them a 16-8 record. I don't know if that will do it. Florida is almost assured of the top seed. aTm has a cakewalk schedule - Tennessee really needs to take that series from them.

Alabama finishes at Ole Miss and has Auburn at home. They'll go 4-2 or 5-1 I think. If Tennessee takes two from them they go 5-4 or 6-3. That's a 15-9 or 16-8 record for 'bama.

LSU has Ole Miss, Tennessee, Missouri, and SC. They could go 10-2 and finish with an 18-6 record.

Auburn has Missouri, SC, MSU, and Alabama. They could also go 10-2 and finish 18-6 in conference.

aTm has Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee. Maybe 8-4 for a 17-6 finish (I believe they had a game against SC cancelled).

Wow it's gonna be so difficult. Alabama and Osorio coming to town next weekend. The bats will cool down folks. Moss and Arnold better be at their best.

Wind blowing out all weekend and two left-handed pitchers, went with the right handed bats of McSwain and Weimer instead of an additional left-handed slapper.
