Ralph and Karen wouldn't make the excuse, but I do think the schedule had something to do with Wednesday. Drive back from Auburn Sunday night, arrive in Knoxville around midnight. They had to take their NCAA-mandated day off on Monday, then took a charter flight to MSU on Tuesday afternoon after their finals were completed with the intention of practicing at MSU Tuesday evening. Then it rained on Tuesday afternoon in Starkville and they weren't allowed on the field to practice when they got there. So the team didn't have the opportunity to practice or even hit as a team between the end of the Auburn game Sunday and the time they arrived at the field to hit and warm up on Wednesday morning.
No excuses, we are talented enough that it shouldn't have made a difference, but since you mentioned it, that's the schedule they had to deal with. They were able to watch plenty of film on MSU's pitchers on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but it broke the routine of watching, then hitting, then watching again.
Auburn had two of the best ERA pitchers in the league last weekend. Their offense isn't good, but the offensive output down there was about what I expected against those arms. It's what Auburn has done to most everyone, even in a bunch of losing efforts. Happened again in their game with LSU tonight.
I said it on the broadcast tonight, I thought that was as sharp as Ashley has been in a long time tonight. I think her getting off to a strong start in the first inning and the offense getting her a run made all the difference.
