Lady Vols Softball

Liked the lineup tonight really been wanting to see Milloy up there all season. Anyway she gets on is usually same as a double. I probably hit Riley fifth after Seggern and move Shipman down to sixth but that is insignificant just me liking the way Riley hits the ball.

Let's hope the hitting slump was caused by finals anxiety and scheduling stupidity. Really was ridiculous to have the team travel to Starktown in the middle of finals week for one day of play. It looked to me like the staff and team hadn't had time to prepare a game plan to attack their pitchers. Our hitters were swinging defensively the entire day. Their pitchers can't be as good as they looked Wednesday or they would have a much better record. We just didn't seem to have a scouting report on them or a plan of attack. Or something.

I don't think you can blame finals and scheduling for the slump. We only scored 7 runs in three games last weekend against Auburn. That's 10 runs in the last 5 SEC games. Can't win like that.

Ralph and Karen wouldn't make the excuse, but I do think the schedule had something to do with Wednesday. Drive back from Auburn Sunday night, arrive in Knoxville around midnight. They had to take their NCAA-mandated day off on Monday, then took a charter flight to MSU on Tuesday afternoon after their finals were completed with the intention of practicing at MSU Tuesday evening. Then it rained on Tuesday afternoon in Starkville and they weren't allowed on the field to practice when they got there. So the team didn't have the opportunity to practice or even hit as a team between the end of the Auburn game Sunday and the time they arrived at the field to hit and warm up on Wednesday morning.

No excuses, we are talented enough that it shouldn't have made a difference, but since you mentioned it, that's the schedule they had to deal with. They were able to watch plenty of film on MSU's pitchers on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, but it broke the routine of watching, then hitting, then watching again.

Auburn had two of the best ERA pitchers in the league last weekend. Their offense isn't good, but the offensive output down there was about what I expected against those arms. It's what Auburn has done to most everyone, even in a bunch of losing efforts. Happened again in their game with LSU tonight.

I said it on the broadcast tonight, I thought that was as sharp as Ashley has been in a long time tonight. I think her getting off to a strong start in the first inning and the offense getting her a run made all the difference.

Something I didn't know. Thanks for the information.

I agree, Brian. We are talented enough it shouldn't have made a difference. We played poorly at MSU. It happens. Every player has a slump. When several go thru it at the same time, you have a week like we just had. Doesn't mean we are a bad team, but it's okay to say we were a bad team Wednesday.

Today’s game will be a big indicator to me how they’ll look in the coming weeks if they continue, assuming Turner is in the circle.

Looks like Rogers is coming back into form at the right time. Turner has shown flashes of shutting teams down, just got to get more consistent. Hopefully hitting is coming back also just at the right time. Zou is tough, look for a better effort from them today.

The first base ump is only looking at the runner and pitcher he never know if someone swings at a ball or not.
