Bad free throw shooting in a blowout game tends to point the finger at focus as the problem. I'm sure at the individual level, finding a solution is more complicated than that. But ultimately, I think it returns to some aspect of focus.
I'm curious if the current research posits that shooting free throws accurately under no stress (in practice or a blowout game), and making them under extreme stress (when the game or season is on the line) are considered two sides of the same challenge, or if they require two different mental skillsets?
If you compare a free throw to a six-foot putt, what drops consistently on the practice green becomes a different monster when hundreds of thousands of dollars or your PGA card is on the line. I'm inclined to believe performing under pressure is better preparation for performing in the absence of pressure, than visa-versa. What do you coaches believe?
