Lady Vols vs Lady Cardinals

Can I ask, I loved watching the pure shooting by the lady vols and such especially that little 16-18 ft jump shot which after our dry spell I felt couldn't be defended in the 2nd half.

I was getting ready for work week and I see on bottom line of Baseball game that Louisville was up 8 and I was like let me check out this game.

Was anyone else embarrassed by the sport with the last 3 minutes of basketball with the Baylor/Louisville game. The commentators would say things like that looked like little to no contact when Griner would almost come through and take off someones head. I saw Odyssey Sims trip one girl, then push another girl to ground to get rebound. The technical on the Louisville player was somewhat bad, but you have an out of control player who almost runs over a girl in the lane gets called a charge and then the coach is running up the sideline almost taking off her jacket, It was like watching pure madness and almost like the refs decided we are just going to let them play and the Baylor team took it upon themselves to play as out of control as possible. I watched the last couple minutes of the Wichita state/LaSalle game when they thought fouling would extend the game and it looked on purpose but fluid and this game looked embarrassing.

I like the womens game for how fluid the motions look when shooting and the pure shooting touches, but sometimes when there is close games necessary fouls just look absurd.

Louisville is going to be tough. Baylor got beat because they were out-coached. It's going to fun to watch Vols and Louisville.

was the reason Baylor got beat. Louisville averages 5 treys a game but made 16 in this game! They shot 48 percent for the game, and 64 percent from three-point range. With that kind of shooting they would have beaten anybody today.

They will be confident and intense on Tuesday. UT will have to bring their toughness in addition to their talent. And some good defense should help too. The Vols looked good today.

Here's the thing--and I hope the UT coaches know this: We don't need Simmons to score a lot to win. Yea, it helps--but this UT team has a lot of players who can shoot and who can score. It's nice when Simmons is shooting well, but if she isn't she doesn't need to force shots. She needs to play within herself and pass well. UT passed the ball better in the first half today than I have seen the Vols pass it in a long time. We found the open man and made shots. We're not a great defensive team but we're working at it, and Harrison helps our defense a lot. In fact, our biggest weakness is the mediocre defense of our guards. Williams is very good but...Need to play tough against a tough-minded louisville squad.

I always make the joke that McRae is a poor man's J.R. smith, but Simmons is the literal female version of J.R. Smith. Her shooting will ultimately decide if we win or not.

Yes I agree, Simmons could be an important factor for us with all of her speed and scoring. But remember, we have lost to teams that win with 3s and then adjusted to win against teams that win with 3s. So, the LVs are experienced at winning against teams that win with the 3s. Hopefully, the win will come to us and Speedy and the Seniors will make a mark this next game. Would be brilliant to see Taber knock down about 10-15 3s just on her own against L'ville. She's been known to open up a can of somethin' when the chips are down!

I think we are forgetting that the Louisville coach came up with a great game plan. It will be interesting to see his approach in stopping UT. Simmons must have a good game for us.

One game at a time. If you think TN is assured a spot in the National Championship game, just remember that we lost to Chattanooga and Louisville beat Baylor. Those two games alone should be enough to keep every player, coach, and fan fixated on one game :)

I think Simmons needs to have a better game offensively, but I really hope she and the rest of the team bring the same defensive intensity Simmons had against Oklahoma. That play where she dove for the loose ball and unfortunately hurt the other player is the intensity we need. It was TN's defense and rebounding that allowed us to win by that much. We need a repeat of that next game and if the shots fall more often, even better.

I'm really liking Izzy Harrison in this next game. I think she's the X factor for TN's defensive match up w/Louisville because she has the ability to block shots & rebound under the rim. She's also good in rebounding offensive shots as well & has the ability of put backs to the basket. This statement is in no way talking down to Graves. If Holly can play both Graves & Harrison at the same time in the paint, then TN has a really great chance to end Louisville's run in the tournament. Just an observation from my lazy-boy.

I've seen Griner play a lot better I think Louisville laying three players on her got her frustrated and her defense in this game was awful.
Her strength is blocking shots in the paint and rebounding. When you take 25 3's it negates her D and when you hit 16 of those it negates her rebounding. So less about her playing poorly and more about louisville's 3 pt shooting

Baylor wasnt outcoached... How can anyone predict almost 70% from the 3 and Griner basically mailing it in. It was a good gameplan, one thats been tried often and finally worked.

I disagree! Go back and watch the L Player waving her arms furiously the entire game while she was up in BGs face. Then when the ball came into the paint, 2 more L players joined her guarding BG. Stone hard cold chilling tough defense baffled BG and caused her to lose it by missing even some shots she can make blindfolded. Great coaching plan. Won the damn game!

Go Lady Vols!!!

It's not one or other other - it's some of both. It's not like other teams haven't tried to deny Griner before. Last year in Knoxville in person, I saw Glory and Vicki do a damn fine job containing Griner and holding her in check. Unfortunately, Griner was able to make some plays in the 2nd half, Sims and the other players stepped up and made some plays, AND Baylor would NOT miss a free throw shooting 22/24 and one of those misses I think the game was in hand.

If Baylor's guards would have stepped up and been on, they could have easily negated that with some 3 point shots of their own. And, if Louisville hadn't had such a hot hand from the 3 point line, it would have been a loss despite their "genius" gameplan. They shot 16-25 64% and only won by 1. Baylor didn't shoot poorly 6-17 for 35% but they took just about as many shots as Louisville made. I don't know how easy it is to search the database, but I'd be interested to know how many teams have taken more than 20 3 point shots, shot better than 50%, and lost. I have to think it's not many.

Louisville definitely gets credit for going out an executing a winning game plan but some luck was definitely on their side, too.

for a rock fight. Louisville will try to get in our kitchen as they did against Baylor. The officiating will be important. The farther you go in the NCAA tourney, the more officials tend to let the players play--but you can't let obvious fouls go uncalled. That's how players and games get out of control.

Spani, Simmons and Massangale are the X factor for this team. One never knows how those three will play. Williams is steady--but the other three can be very unsteady and that's a worry now that we've reached the elite 8. Spani can't play defense, Simmons' runs hot and cold, and Massengale can look indifferent at both ends of the court sometimes. I thought Massengale was pretty good yesterday: she's talented but too quiet for a PG. Harrison was good yesterday--and her presence is huge for this team--gives everybody more confidence. If Simmons has a decent, controlled night I like the Vols against the feisty cardinals.

They are the Louisville Cardinals, not the Lady Cardinals. They are a small team with I think 4 players out for the season. Very physical team. Must be prepared to get beat up. Now that Baylor is out of it, every remaining team thinks they are going to win it all. The L'ville game proves only one thing. Any team can beat any other on a given night. Baylor was expected to win by 26.

We have got to be on our game & not let up. Playing Louisville will give us some hope to win but it's not going to be easy if Speedy doesn't score this time around. Nearing the end of Baylor & Louisville, I was thinking that the refs were trying to let Baylor come back with some of those calls that were being made. We also can't count out UConn or ND on losing before the dance.

i thought the same with Oklahoma and the refs

It wouldn't surprise me if the refs weren't on the side of the Cinderella team in the next game. They always seem to buy into whatever the narrative is and call the game accordingly.

Yeah, could be their Cinderella team. I hope we're their Cinderella team, though. New coach, first season, LV's trying to reach the mountain top yet again.
