Lady Vols vs LSU

Arnold really settled down after that terrible first inning. She gets her self in trouble with her control sometime but 18 wins for a freshman pitcher and an era under 2.00 is awesome.

Florida another shutout over Ole Miss 3 to 0. Auburn wins again today. We got to keep winning to keep Auburn down that series they play with Bama will be fun to watch.

A win tomorrow clinches sixth place in the conference. We need the sweep because florida is going to be very tough.

Arnold has done an amazing job for a freshman-- far better than most expected. But she has gotten in trouble early in her past two starts and had to be relieved. Wonder how the Weeklys will manage Matty's pitch count with UF and aTm on deck?

I would think Arnold starts again tomorrow and hopefully can go 4 or 5 innings again. I think Moss probably has about a 70 pitch count left for this weekend.

A&M is hittable....Florida cannot hit but can pitch like crazy

To beat Florida your pitcher has to pitch a shutout and you have to hope you can scrape a run up somewhere during the game. You give them 3 or 4 runs your going to lose.

That's my thinking, too. They were probably hoping for complete games from Arnold, but that strategy might not work going forward.

If we continue to play well, I think we can take the aTm series. And maybe they'll start calling IPs on Barnhill and throw her off her game. Those IPs on Matty Moss the last three games have been a headscratcher.

The coaches are going to have to manage Arnold's innings very carefully. Karen spoke after the Alabama series about Arnold and the possibility of fatigue late in the season. There's no margin of error for the pitching staff, it's Moss and Arnold and nobody else. Fair or not Moss is going to have to do Yeoman work from here on out.

The concerns that Ralph and Karen both have about hitting were starkly illustrated in this game today.

The top half of the order was 7 of 15 with 5 RBIs and 6 runs scored.

The bottom half of the order 3 of 12 with no RBIs and no runs.

That lack of production from the bottom half of the order coupled with the lack of pitching depth I fear will eventually catch up with the team.

I'm still looking for one win against Florida and two wins against Texas A&M. That would mean they would finish the season 7 and 4 and I think would have the second seed in the SEC tournament.

I watched Arizona beat Oregon today. This is the best Arizona team in seven years. They are really really good. I still think Florida is the best team in the country but Arizona has a better balance of pitching and hitting than does Florida.

I agree about Texas A&M. Their two pitchers Show and Harrington are good but I think they are hittable as well.

This is the best Florida hitting team in a few seasons. They're second in the SEC in runs scored behind Tennessee. But pitching is definitely their strength.

Exactly and they still struggle to score which is crazy haha...they're like Bama maybe a little better at hitting

A couple of nice interviews with Ralph and Arnold after the game.

https://youtu.be/f9DCck0qLIY

Ralph says that team chemistry and Geer's leadership have been critical through this win streak.

Karen said last week that the team was calm which I think serves the team well when they're in a hostile environment on the road and having to play from behind.

Watching the team early on in New Mexico and Palm Springs I thought they were a little sedate in the dugout. That may have been a manifestation of the calmness that Karen speaks of coupled with the fact that the team is so young they just hadn't gotten to know each other yet. The team is much more loud and demonstrative now.

Points:

--Lsu gave us the winning run with an inexplicably dumb play. We've got Leach on third, Vines on first, two outs: Vines steals second, and the Lsu catcher throws all the way to second, trying to get Vines; she doesn't--wasn't even close--and Leach strolls home to give us our 5th run. Thank you!

--Another great game by Leach today. She is an outstanding player with a palpable confidence in herself. Her OBP is very close to .500.

--Gregg is an interesting and very talented hitter. When is the last time that she didn't take a strike? She always seems to--but then she is always ahead in the count because pitchers seem to always start her with at least two balls. She has walked a huge number of times in the last four weeks. Also, notice how on her hits she seldom finishes her swing. She just pokes the ball to the opposite field. She actually pulled a grounder to second today--that's the first time in a while that I can remember her pulling a ball. Even on her home run, she did not finish her swing--the color commentator mentioned it (former LSU coach). I think she's a practitioner of Ralph's hitting philosophy, which he mentioned in the post-game interview--swing to contact, on the plane. That's exactly what Gregg does.

--Geer is getting in a groove again, and that is going to help us, for sure. She laced a couple of hits today.

--RE the bottom of the order: They've not been bad. McSwain has been hitting well--two hits, including a homer, last night; double today. Seggern has had an excellent freshman year--has played excellent defense and has gotten some clutch hits. She beat bama--'nuff said. I continue to believe Rowland will be a good hitter. She is a first-year player, remember. She looks like she knows what she's doing at the plate; she just hasn't gotten results lately, and now the Weeklys have gone back to Holcomb. It's nice to have options. Lockman had an O-for day at the plate today--was late or slow with a lot of her swings--but she has improved as a hitter this year, and she's a solid catcher. I think the coaches ought to give Reimer more time at catcher--I think she's a better hitter than Lockman, and seems solid behind the plate--perhaps not quite as good as Lockman, but I don't see why you couldn't start her one game in a series and give Lockman some rest.

--We are surely the ONLY team in the SEC that effectively has used only 2 pitchers in conference play. Morrison pitched 3.1 innings of relief in our FIRST SEC game, against SC, and I don't think has thrown another pitch in an SEC game since. Have I missed any another other SEC innings from her? She gave up three runs in the 6th inning of that first game--after pitching 2.1 scoreless innings to start her stint that day in a game we were well behind in--but that was apparently enough for Ralph to conclude that she's not dependable enough. I hope that decision doesn't bite us. We can only hope Arnold can stay strong and does not tire out, but it is might be dicey, as Jeff suggests, come tournament time, facing good teams and lots of pressure. I think the coaches should have given Morrison some SEC innings, but when Ralph loses confidence in you, well, you might has well sign up with the SESC--Southeastern Siberian Conference. Hard to believe we got run-ruled in our first SEC game. Look at us now. Let's get #21 tomorrow.

Bama has pretty much only used Osorio and Littlejohn. Madi Moore has only thrown 3 innings for them in SEC play.

To take both games vs. Alabama and at least two out of three at LSU speaks volumes for the improvement this team has made over the course of the season. I am convinced that they are for real and they may be the team to beat in the conference at this point in time. Florida may be better but they will have to prove it and I like our chances at this point. Pitching is better than I thought it would be. It would be nice to have one more solid pitcher in the rotation but the LV's came close to winning it all a few years back when they had only one real good pitcher.

Regarding the bottom of the order- It's been pretty meh, depending on who is there. Season batting averages are meaningless now. We're through with TSU and Directional State. In SEC play Lockman is batting .171 - Seggern .196 - Rowland .226 - Holcomb .227 - Weimer .214. And those averages include the series against SC, Ark and Ole Miss, with a combined record of 14-38. Those 3 teams rank 9,10 and 12 in the SEC in team ERA. Seggern, Lockman, Rowland and Holcomb have 14 walks between them in 16 SEC games. So those flashy numbers on the TV screen are a little deceiving. What have you done for me lately, against the SEC. Even McClain, who is 2nd on the team in batting average in SEC games at .351, gets pinch hit for because the coaches don't have confidence she'll put the ball in play. She has ZERO walks and 9 Ks. She has not a single RBI. And McSwain, at .333 in SEC play, has a MUCH higher average in conference games than non conference (.272). You have to wonder how long that can go on. To be fair this is a tough league and the bottom of our lineup is probably as good or better than most in the league. But as the teams get tougher and the stakes get higher we'll need them to hit a little more to have a chance to advance in post season. JMHO

Now that was sad. The LSU pitcher can't even plant her foot and the bottom of our order can't get a hit with bases loaded.

We have a terrible approach to at bats in situations like that. A 2 run lead and just needing to add a little insurance and we have 3 consecutive batters swinging 34" of lumber from their heels like we need a grand salami to win the game. In close, late game situations with RISP I'd love to see some girls choke up and shorten up and control the bat better.

I'll buy them being the team to beat when someone gets the balls to call all of Kelli Barnhills ridiculously illegal pitches

Are illegal pitches a tracked stat? Moss has been called for three illegal pitches in two days I believe. According to the announcers the umpire was calling Moss's right foot being off the pitching plate. That's difficult to tell watching on TV because you can't see the front edge of the plate. But honestly I can't see Moss's heel or foot move any differently on the pitches that aren't illegal than on the ones that are.

But if they're calling Moss this close then Barnhill ought to be tossed out of a game.
