Lady Vols vs Pittsburgh in the NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

Sometimes you can't stop a hot player. Ohio State's Kelsey Mitchell went off against UNC in the 2nd half and brought OSU back from a 23-point deficit. OSU eventually tied the game but lost on a buzzer beater. UNC had nothing for her.
The most concerning thing was that Holly did absolutely nothing to help her team stop one player that was hurting us. I am not down her as much as a lot of people but just what exactly did she do to help us today? What did we try to slow down Kiesel?[/QUOTE]

Since Harrison went down UT has lost a total of 2 games. Not bad considering many people said then our season was over. I have accepted the fact that without her UT is going to play and have to win ugly games. Think about this, many teams in the Top 25 would struggle if they lost their best player. I even think ND would struggle without LLoyd.

We have a wealth of talent on the team. Losing our best player AT THE TIME IN THE SEASON we did is what hurt. Baylor lost Odyssey Sims and has the weakest team they've had in 5 yrs yet they were in the top 5 for part of the season. But Mulkey had an entire preseason to get her squad used to being w/o Sims. Holly had to retool on the fly in the middle of the season. And we still made it to the Sweet 16.

I may be in the minority but I don't like Reynolds as our starting PG

She has her plusses and minuses. I've always liked Ariel better as PG, but she can't get to the rim like Jordan can. The downside is that Jordan can get to the rim almost at will, but she will miss more 5-7 foot jumpers than she will make.

I think Ariel does a better job running a half court offense (especially with Cierra as another playmaker), but Jordan pushes tempo better.

What??! Did you watch the game? this is the stupidest post ever. She matched up our best defensive player on Kiesel and face guarded her the entire game. It was a great defensive game plan and mainly prevented her from getting open looks.

When we play smart basketball, limit turnovers and shoot the three well, we are hard to beat. I think sometimes the ladies push tempo a little TO much and it gets them
in trouble with quite a few unforced turnovers. We had a good shot at getting nearly a twenty point lead in the first half, but those early to's killed our momentum, not to mention all the tv timeouts lol.

Anyone thinking the officiating for this game was stellar, might want to go to a few games and watch the team when they come in for a time out. Bleeding, scratched, whelps, red marks...all from great officiating with no fouls called. Small crowd again tonight for the game. We have good attendance during the regular season and then fall short when we're hosting NCAA championship games at home. I don't get it. For those that have been saying all season that we need to get rid of Holly and hire so and so; I think most, if not all, of the so and so's are sitting home watching the games.

We have been a better offensive team WITHOUT Izzy than with her. Why? Because we move the basketball around--share the ball--and everybody gets involved and everybody scores--instead of trying to force the ball to Harrison all the time, and Harrison always feeling compelled to try and score. That is not smart basketball.

However, tonight, after an excellent first 10 minutes, our coaches allowed our players to effectively anoint Graves as the new Harrison. After a great start, we stupidly kept trying to force the ball into Graves in traffic, committed lots of turnovers--and basically lost our chance to put the game away early. Our team's IQ, and our coaches' IQ, isn't very high sometimes. Carter, Nared and others passed up a bunch of easy shots tonight because we against became obsessed with forcing the ball inside--and our offensive play deteriorated as a result.

Beyond that, our defense went in the toilet in the second halr and Warlick did her usual NCAA bench job--meaning nothing. We could have switched to a zone to break up their momentum and keep their guard from driving to the basket on every possession--but we didn't. Warlick seems to forget that you can actually make tactical changes in an NCAA tourney game. As a result, this game came dangerously close to being a one possession game late, because we did nothing different to try and stop Pitt. Warlick has got to get her head out of the clouds in these games.

And yea, Reynolds can get into the lane and get a pretty good 8-foot shot just about whenever she wants---but she is missing too many of them! You can't shoot 30 percent from 8 feet; you have to shoot at least 50 percent from 8 feet. C'mon, Reynolds.

I think Nared will not play well going forward if she thinks she has to get the ball to Graves constantly. This is why our offense got out of kilter. I would hope that Warlick would recognize that we can't get back into the habit of forcing the ball inside every possession--but I doubt she will because jamming the inside--no matter if our post is triple-teamed--seems to be her mindset. :hi:

A partial answer is increased ticket prices. Another possible answer was mentioned in an article I read the other day - the NCAA handles the marketing. I'm unsure why that would deter anyone who wants to come to a game from attending. I also assume season ticket holders do not get tickets to the NCAA games - but I may be wrong on that one.

What really chapped my ass about the officiating tonight was how we continually got mugged in the post and no calls. I also saw numerous hand checks that wasn't called against Pitt. Oh and the worst call of them all was at the end of the first half when bash went up for a shot and got fouled..the one lady ref had her hand up ready to signal the and 1 in case graves made the basket. Of course graves missed the basket, but they don't give graves her two foul shots?? Does anyone remember that play with a few seconds left in the 1st half?? I'm surprised no one has mentioned it. One thing is for sure, the consistency in calling fouls, or shall I say lack there of, is a huge problem in wcbb

That, in itself would be a deterrent. NCAA doesn't do much right.

You're probably right on this one, but I would think season ticket holders would come up with the few extra bucks for these games. Still, the attendance is probably better than a lot of the other games.

I do. There was another where a Pitt player was fouled not even attempting a shot and she got 2 free throws. Another good example was when Graves went up for a shot in the middle of three players. One hit her in the back and the other two hit each arm and the ball went out of bounds. No foul and they went to review to see who the ball was out on.

THATS the one that pissed me off the most! I was like..."I hope they see the clear FOUL that they missed while reviewing who the ball went off of!"

I plan on reading this thread up until 6:30 and then not again. If we get down 2-0 or don't win by 50, there will be so much negativity on here I won't be able to stand it. Sure there are a couple already have "Holly can't coach" pre-typed in just waiting to hit the Post button.

Good luck Lady Vols !

Has there ever been a relatively close game in which the fans were not sure that the officials were biased against UT? It's like the sun coming up in the morning. It's never the team or our play, it's always those !*# officials! And the announcers! They hate us too!

Tunnel vision on their part. We had quite a few egregious fouls against us that weren't called.

Yes we did. I've yet to see a good officiated game in the tournament this year and that's sad. I think Miss St received the absolute WORST call of the tournament against Duke.

Holly is coaching the team in real time, not sitting on her ass on a couch and second guessing.

in the second half to a team that at best is slightly better than decent. If Warlick was coaching "in real time," her moves--and I saw no defensive moves--were not working very well. I can see Warlick shaking her head now, and this astute analysis: "We just could not stop that point guard."

We won. Give it a rest. Officiating in all sports has been a downward spiral for the past 10 years.

South Carolina more than 10,000 for each of their games. Louisville over 7,000 I believe.

Don't know what's wrong with those folks living right there in Knoxville.
