Lance Leipold is a terrific coach

Leipold to me is the same as Chris Petersen.

Never gonna wow you with his recruiting classes, but when you look at his programs and teams, you realize the guy gets more with less than anyone else.

Many will say Saban is the best, but Chris Petersen may be the most under rated coach of the last 20 years. I wanted him to be at UT so badly when we were searching. If Heupel left tomorrow, Petersen and Leipold would be my first two choices. Dudes can coach.
I haven't watch Kansas but you are right about Petersen. That cotton bowl game with Oklahoma was an all time classic. It may be in my list of top 5 amazing games. He pulled plays that I haven't seem in 40 years and they worked! It was a simply incredible game plan. About the best I have ever seen.

If you're Nebraska you go get him.

That offense along with Chadwell's Coastal Carolina one are so hard to defend and exciting to watch. Both heavy in option concepts. Perfect for Nebraska
Chadwell is at Liberty

I was wondering where he was. As far as Leipold, he has certainly turned around the Kansas program since he got there. He's getting up in age so hopefully he gets a bigger job soon. Amazed what these coaches are doing at"basketball schools" . Elko has got off to a great start at Duke.

Elko has to be a top target for anyone hiring. It’s not a fluke. The things he is doing bs Cut, at least Cut the last 2-3 years are night and day different and it’s leading to better results.

Petersen doesn’t want to coach anymore imo. He’s had his pick of jobs.

Didn’t he have a sick kid or sick wife? Or something like that?

That sort of thing puts life in perspective.
Pretty sure it was a kid. son I think. read that the best care for whatever it was was somewhere up there in the NW.

When he was at Boise, one of his children was fairly young at the time and had medical issues, I believe. It was thought that was the reason he spurned many offers to leave there and might never take a P5 job, but he did eventually go to Washington. I seem to remember the narrative being that he'd never leave Boise, or would never leave the PNW.

Petersen reminds me a lot of Mark Richt. An extremely professional, buttoned-up guy and the job wasn't the end all, be all thing in his life. Loved coaching football, but also had other interests/things that are important to him. It's a stark contrast to most CFB coaches, where it is like 99% of what they know and care about is football. IMO, you kind of have to be an a-hole to be a high-level CFB coach, and he definitely did not seem like one.

His son had a long recovery from surgery on a large brain tumor. He initially didn’t want to be far from the center in Boise. That son graduated from college, so all’s well.

His son was sick, but that was in his early days at Boise. He had pretty much fully recovered by the time he left for Washington.

I read something that was asking parents of players who they would want their sons to play for. The coaches that frequently came up were Richt and Bob Stoops. I think the fact that they were personable and down to earth came up as reasons. Both being retired doesn't surprise me as like you said, you have to be a bit of a jerk to be successful.

I think Peterson fits that mold from what I've heard.

When Harbaugh goes off to the NFL to avoid trouble ala Pete Carroll style, this would be a great hire for the Wolverines.

Impressive win. It's funny how Kansas first went the route of "name" coaches (Charlie Weis and Les Miles) without success, but then hit the jackpot with Buffalo's head coach.

Also funnier considering after they forced Mangino out they also then hired Buffalo's coach Turner Gill. So kind of full circle that they started the search for a replacement for Mangino with a Buffalo coach and finally have found a winner with another Buffalo coach.
