Lane Kiffin's 'dream job' will pay him $4 million. For ... what, again?

Ask Phillip Fulmer how well his friends in the luxury boxes saved him from a crowd of about 60,000 against Mississippi State and Neyland Stadium colored Crimson.

What do you mean? You know the other 40,000 were preparing the orange wedges and plastic trophies for the players and coaches

It was Phil's time to go. That decision wasn't based on money, or at least I hope not.

If that decision was money-based, the UTAD needs to hire new accountants immediately, solely on the grounds of CPF's $6 million buyout package.

I'm not really sure what you wanted Hammy to do in his situation. Wait until we had completely lost this signing class and set us back four more years? That sounds like a great idea!

I'm still fairly curious to Hat's answer for this question...

I mean, we already struck out about 4 times or so. The program was in some pretty hectic turmoil at the time. Kiffin made us look like a second rate program and left Hammy in a tough spot. It sounded like we were trying to pay an average Muschamp a pretty hefty amount and that wasn't working. I mean, Dooley was essentially our last resort.

The fan base is just crossing their fingers and hoping for the best. What are our other choices? From the looks of his buy-out, we plan on sticking with him for at least three years. If it doesn't work out, maybe the coaching market will work out better for us next time around.

I disagree in that Kiff left for $4 mil....we were not going to pay an unproven coach that.

I love that people think one lost recruiting class will set you back four years, but hitching yourself to a WAC loser isn't a disaster. By the time Dooley's three or four years are done here, Tennesse will be lucky to be competing for SEC titles by the year 2025.

Hamilton already hired a Lane Kiffin, with a great recruiting staff.

All it will take next time is hiring one that will actually stick around. Will also probably require similar circumstances that Fulmer stepped into when he started. Probably Saban and/or Meyer bolting for the NFL.

Not really. Bill Battle sunk the program so badly that it took Johnny Majors 8 years to get UT back to the top of the SEC. And Majors came to UT right after winning a national title at Pitt.

Assuming we don't hire another Johnny Majors, I wouldn't think it would take our next coach 8 years to get us back into contention if Dooley fails as bad as Battle. That would be hard to do.

It depends on the coach. Some people can do it much faster than others. For example, Saban took over a Bama team that most good coaches wouldn't have gotten to the SEC championship for at least 4 years, in my opinion.

But it should never take 8 years, unless Dooley sets a new standard for awful, and the fans tolerate it about 3 years too long.

We're in a different era now. Failure is simply not tolerated that long at schools where football is important. Not even at SC, in a town where people by and large don't really give that big a damn about college football.

Agreed. If Dooley isn't doing well, the only correct option is to get rid of him similar to Florida with Zook and Bama with Shula. I'm afraid our fan base will be more likely to give Dooley too long just because he took over a bad team. He needs time, but we still have to get rid of him if it's clear he can't win, whether it's 2 years or much longer.

Money makes college athletics go round.

Hamilton would never have had the support to fire Fulmer if not for the empty seats and lost revenue.
