Large Explosion in downtown Nashville

We had a good friend who was shot and killed inside his home just because of an unverified 911 call. He was shot through a window while going downstairs at something like 1 AM to see what was going on - never even knew it was the cops outside. He was a retired Navy officer - one of the nicest and most helpful people you would ever meet; there's evidence that cops don't always verify information before acting. Of course, he wasn't black, so nobody particularly cared.
So that's how our country repaid his service.

That's pretty disturbing and depressing.

My only real point was considering a report was filed in the recent past the statement from MNPD that he wasn't on their radar isn't a good look. Seems to me there is a better response to that question.
Again being mentioned in a random report means nothing about “being on radar”. Since 2019 there was probably 3-4K similar reports

Here's another article I saw earlier today regarding how investigators can use information in your car against you. The interesting part is that your car can download and store stuff in your phone, so it can be accessed even if they can't force you to unlock your phone. Theoretically anybody buying your used car could find out a lot of personal information with the right tools because dealers don't wipe the car memory and most people are unaware the problem exists.

Insecure wheels: Police turn to car data to destroy suspects' alibis Looser privacy standards for vehicle data are a treasure chest of data for law enforcement.

Oh no, you mean the cops were warned about something over a year ago and did absolutely nothing about? I'm just shocked at the ineptitude I tell ya. Good thing they were writing those speeding tickets and racially profiling minorities tho. That sure does help.

'I know what he is doing' says Anthony Warner's former girlfriend in chilling voice mail
I agree. I would like to see the standards for probable cause lowered considerably. I think anyone calling the police about anyone else should automatically generate a search warrant. With any luck we could also catch people not wearing masks inside their home and have them fined or arrested.

Unless you live in the Middle East, it's "peculiar" that a bomb would go off anywhere. What makes Nashville special?

Smaller, unassuming, southern town. The only things that have ever been wrong with Nashville is the historical ability to overestimate and over build itself, and to allow too many west coasters to bring in their politics lately.

How many speed traps were set up since 2019? How many drug busts for weed? How many prostitution stings?

Protect and serve vs collect revenue for the state

The most amazing part is that you don't see cops monitoring intersections where cars are literally going in directions that conflict. Instead it's radar in low threat areas, and that has nothing to do with safety. Speed is always a factor when two objects collide, but there's a huge difference between exceeding an arbitrarily set speed limit and actually driving too fast for conditions.

I live in the city and pay city taxes on top of county taxes and I can count on one hand how many times I've seen the police patrol my neighborhood in the last 10 years. I can also count on two hands how many times I've seen the police set up in front of my neighborhood running a radar trap in the last few months. It also doesn't seem to matter that they lowered the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on a two lane state highway with turning lanes. Yee haw, lets make some money!

And none of those things have anything to do with the fact that this was properly investigated and exhausted through all legal means

Honestly most traffic stings like speeding and running stop signs or school zones (much like prostitution stings) are done because citizens call in several complaints and demand officers take action. Except for THP, they live for it LOL

Mc Veighs old yellow Mercury supposedly
had no license plates and he supposedly
had a 45 cal pistol on his lap when he was pulled over???? Figure that one out???
I guess it's a good thing the highway patrol officer arrested him for no license plates and carrying a firearm illegally

Yeah right. Let's lower the speed limit from 45 to 35 and then set up radar traps because the citizens demand it.

The city or county councilpersons lowers (or appoints officials) that raise or lower speed limits, not the police department. Sounds like you should take it up with them?

I have to agree that arbitrary rulings, ordinances, and laws set by governments do put police in an awkward position and undermine the ability of police to focus on important things - particularly when some of the stuff appears solely intended to generate income.

Oh I remember the justification, it was because there were a couple of wrecks on a particular corner. Since then they have straightened the corner out and installed a traffic light there. Apprarently revenue is too good to change the speed limit back to where it was.

I was always amazed that a new multilane bridge with wide lanes and shoulders over the TN River was 35 mph, and a narrow tunnel with scrape marks all over the walls was 45 ... and that speed limits here seemed to be consistently about 10 mph lower than what they would have been in Knoxville. You would have loved the conversation I had with the city traffic engineer regarding photo radar - especially the ticket part sent out by a private company in Atlanta, and then the discussion on sequencing traffic lights and on traffic circles. It never crossed this clown's mind that when a light changes you get a surge in traffic and the lack of traffic before it flipped the light for cross traffic just in time for the oncoming batch of cars to have to stop all over again.

When my youngest was going to ETSU I received a red light traffic ticket in the mail for my daughter running a red light. When I watched the "evidence" she got hung out to dry while waiting on pedestrians crossing the road while she was trying to turn left as they walked in front of her. $150 fine for her refusing to run over pedestrians.

I'm not sure if it was proven, but I know there were charges and apparently evidence that they shortened the yellow lights when they put in the red light cameras here. There also doesn't seem much interest in understanding that a car following box type trucks and some SUVs at the proper distance cannot always actually see a traffic light to know that it changed.
