This one is a classic left/right both sides are wrong issue in my opinion.

1) The right is wrong because proper masks, if worn properly, will help. See Hong Kong's numbers where people know how to mask and they don't get their masks from the linen closet.

2) The left is wrong because the only people I've seen in stores properly masked were wearing scrubs. People tugging constantly at a hastily assembled pillowcase masks or huffing and puffing in the aisle because they can't breath normally probably are more at risk than they would have been otherwise.

But because of politics we can't have real conversations about how to protect each other. Partisanship is an illness.

That seems like a very odd story..... I go out all the time.... staying in pigeon forge this weekend..... some wear a mask and some don’t..... I have never seen anyone yell or say anything to anyone else except for maybe trying to stay further away from each other at times.

Even if you wear a surgical mask properly, some of the virus will show up on the exterior of the mask if you have Covid and cough, but it would not project the respiratory particles very far. That is what the studies show.

In Virginia we have a mask mandate currently in effect, if a business has a sign on the door that requires on I simply just put one on, no big deal just a temporary inconvenience. There was a time when partisan politics did not displace mutual respect and neighborliness. I know because I lived through it. Even in these times, I witness more good will than bad. Tennesseans have a centuries deep reputation for stepping up to help others. This is true to this day. That a man would yell "liberal p***y" at a mask-wearing woman in a Nashville grocery store pains me, as it is contrary to our collective character.

I think most people are complying as best they can, but it seems every person and business is doing something unique and so the argument about what to do doesn't really serve any purpose other than extend political grievances that don't need more attention. At this point, if a DIY mask helps people get more comfortable with re-opening, maybe that is the upside here.

It's only temporary, I don't believe the "new normal" commercials. Eventually we will crawl out from under the bed, I think we have already taken the first step and poked our heads out.

The study you are referencing was four patients with Covid coughing into a surgical mask. Some particles were then swabbed from the other side of the mask. The point here is mask handling has to be done very carefully in infected persons as the exterior of the mask would be contaminated.

Other high quality studies have measured the decrease of particle projection with surgical masks with much more data than 4 coughing patients and the reduction is quite significant.

If you want to argue that hospital quality masks worn properly are ineffective, I don't think you will have much success. These masks have been used for many many decades by doctors to limit the spread of disease.

My point about the mask culture war (maybe the stupidest political argument of all time) is that a large number of people are NOT wearing hospital quality masks. DIY masks are irregular, and scientific examination requires constants, so any claims to their effectiveness could not be tested.

Again, the partisans on both sides are proving they are idiots arguing over this.

Actually I get eye rolls from people and business employees when I mentioned a forced mask decree leading up to today . Most people here are not wearing them and they don’t seem to be uncomfortable. We are in the fourth quarter and now the governor decides to start kicking field goals on 3rd down . Smh .

My husband and I are in quarantine right now. 17 people at his work are sick/tested positive. One in ICU in bad shape. Wear the damn mask.

Like I said, so much misinformation on the effectiveness of masks, of whatever type. The effectiveness of a surgical mask during a standard surgical procedure depends on the particulate size and apparently the surgical mask would not meet the COVID standard.

I would not concern myself with a study of only 4 test subjects if all 4 tested make were to the same quality standard. If one mask passes the virus then they all do.
