What’s really important is that they just did something whether it’s based in science or has any chance of being effective. I’m always in favor of knee jerk arbitrary responses by government
I agree with what you say here.As long as it's decently effective, I think something is better than nothing. Rarely is anything black or white, or "it's either 100% or it's useless."
I'm not sure I agree. But even giving full credit to your argument, marginally better is still better.
For me, that's why the maskerauders are like religious zealots. The mask is better than nothing. But it has become the black and white visual symbol of morality with respect to covid. You know what's also better than nothing? Distancing. Hand washing. Being back to back in crowded situations. Being outside in groups rather than inside in groups. As long as it's decently effective, I think something is better than nothing. Rarely is anything black or white, or "it's either 100% or it's useless."
Individual freedom via government mandates
I agree with what you say here.
The problem is that authoritarians and Karens will enforce these things like they are 100% effective. In other words, there really isn't a significant difference in wearing or not wearing a mask. Yet we have got people so fired up about this situation that your effort to "do something rather than nothing" has created a zealot over something that in the grand scheme of things is really trivial.
It all theater. Even the CDC says you should wait 3 to 5 days after being exposed to get tested so there is a 7 day or more window where that test could be meaningless. Add the fact that vaccinated people can and do spread the infection just how much is that option helping prevent it from getting to HI?
That definition of politics is what they teach in political science but it’s incorrect. Most phd level poly sci professors can’t even define it correctly. A more correct definition of politics is that politics is the acquisition and implementation of power.I completely agree with that. But it's not surprising in light of our polarized political system. It's always "my side is completely good/right and their side is completely bad/wrong." Politics is supposed to be the art of the compromise, and no one is willing to give even the slightest inch.
