Latest on Nico’s progress

nah.

I don't think people understand that Joe MIlton is a super senior (6th year)
He won't be here in 2024 in any fashion.

Nico would only be a sophomore with 3 years left to play. Nico will not redshirt.
That was NEVER the plan. Not sure why people keep holding on that ancient.

Why have a RSfreshman Nico with a true freshman Merklinger??
NEWS FLASH: Merklinger will also never redshirt.
Nah, everyone knows this is Milton’s team to lose this year. If we see a lot of Nico then that means Milton didn’t live up to the billing and we lose games we shouldn’t.

Agreed. Some get overly worried with saving a year of eligibility that most likely never gets utilized in today’s game. Redshirting is in play for those who need physical and skills development…not those who are next man up if the starter goes down.

Models his game after listing 4 or so QBs. Doesn’t mention Peyton. 🤦🏻
Was he alive during any of those QBs college careers? He and Peyton are different style QBs. I don’t know that Peyton would’ve ended up at UT if they were employing Heupel’s offense at the time.

I think if Nico plays meaningful snaps it's going to mean things haven't gone well for the team. I agree with others though that I doubt we will be too concerned about redshirting him. If Milton stays healthy he'll probably mop up every game he can.

Peyton wouldn't have liked Heupel's offense? Uh, why not? He would have thrown for even more yards and even more TDs.

Agree. Would love to see what Shuler or Tee could’ve done in this system tho.

Tee won a national title with the old system. It doesn't get better than that.

I suspect that our opponents will adjust to Heupel's system, because that's what happens in football and other sports. Teams adjust. Spurrier brought a totally new system and look to SEC football. It took at least 5 years for teams to adjust and get competitive with it--a long time, partly because his was a dramatic change. His passing game befuddled the conference; the gators were winging the ball all over the field and nobody had the DBs to stop them. Everybody had to start recruiting and coaching up defensive backs. Heupel's system isn't that radical a change. At the end of the day systems don't win games: Personnel and execution do. If you have really good players and execute, you can win with lots of different systems.

Again, this isn’t even a topic of debate, it was a light hearted observation. Chill

I think Nico will play more snaps than you think to get experience. Will play for sure in AP and UConn games. May get some good snaps in UVA, Vandy, UTSA. A couple other games are possible if we are playing well.

I'm actually banking on us scoring more points than last year ... on more opponents than we did last year. :^)
I absolutely think the lwsvol is right about playing time in blow outs.
I also expect that they want to get as much film on him as humanly possible ... I am anticipating that he HAS to be fully ready NEXT season to take over the reins and there is nothing like live action to find where ne needs to improve.
Furthermore, I believe the coaching staff would prefer and that Nico is fully ready to mentor Merklinger in 2024.
My 8 games was not expecting a Milton injury ... but more ... in the event that Milton did get banged up over the course of the season or an injury actually does occur then they will want him to be as experienced as possible.
He said all the right things in the interview, but he did repeat himself a number of times. Go Big Orange.
Could absolutely see Nico getting some decent PT against UVA, Peay, UConn, Vandy. I’m sure he will get snaps in other games but that’s only 4 that I’d be confident in.

I think he's going to mop up whenever he can. I think Heupel will let him run whatever portions of the offense he is capable of playbook knowledge wise when he mops up. I think Heupel's not going to take Milton out if the game is in doubt though unless Milton underperforms, which would be bad news for the team.

Tennessee Quarterback Nico Iamaleava Draws High Praise From Fellow Freshman | Rocky Top Insider

out of the mouth of babes (freshmen)

Davis spoke to the media on Thursday in Knoxville about his relationship with Iamaleava.

“Nico’s my guy, like, for real, for real,” Davis said. “I’ve known Nico for a good amount – we met during 7-on-7 out in California and from there we’ve always kept contact, kept communication. When he committed, obviously I was definitely excited because we got the quarterback that we wanted. I already knew that we were going to make plays together, we were already going to have that connection and that team chemistry together, to go out there and do what we know both of us can do.”
