Excerpts from David Ubben's article in The Athletic tonight:
"Kaylee Scarbrough, a student, arrived at her apartment Thursday morning and discovered Nugget, her gray domestic shorthair cat, hiding underneath her dresser. Scarbrough said he squealed and clawed at her when she tried to pull him out of the space.
When she tried to put him down, she noticed his back legs wouldn’t support him and he was unable to walk.
“And that’s when my roommate Kinley (Bunting) walked up to me and was like, ‘Hey, I just remembered,’” Scarbrough told
The Athletic. “She said that she was in her bed around like 10ish or 11ish. And all she said she heard was my other roommate screaming, ‘No, Aaron, please. You can’t do that. No, Aaron, please.’ And then she started crying and then she heard my cat Nugget squeal like three times. A loud squeal, loud enough for her to hear in her room from the living room.”
Bunting told police she heard Zoe Phillips, saying “you can’t do that” and crying, according to the report...

Scarbrough brought Nugget to Animal Emergency and Specialty Center in west Knoxville. Veterinarians determined that Nugget had a hemorrhage on his left kidney, a blood clot in his bladder and a broken tail. He was in the ICU until Saturday, when he was released back into Scarbrough’s care.
“The vet stated in the records that the clots in his bladder and kidney could not occur unless there was blunt force trauma,” Scarbrough said.
After returning home from the veterinarian’s office, Scarbrough notified police."
Ubben also published texts from the roommate to the kitten owner:
