Les Miles or the house?

Illinois is broke too, but Lovie Smith got a 23 million dollar contract just a few weeks ago and that program is in much worse shape than LSU

Lovie only got that much cause it takes a lot of gas money to keep circling that plane around Knoxville.

You should not be able to fire coaches with records like that and be able to move on to a better phase. Find me one instance where a coach won 75% of his games, the team fired him, and they found another guy who won on an equal or better level.

LSU along with Georgia are in for some years in the wondering wilderness.

I've never fully understood how some people can be so blatantly hypocritical. Who are you or anyone for that matter who's NOT a LSU fan to tell their fan base what they should or should not be happy with or accept? Don't understand that at all. If we lose to Georgia this week, are we taking comfort from a statement or an opinion from an LSU fan that we should be happy that we split with our two biggest East challengers? Hell no!
While I take issue with any college Head Coach being fired during the season, Miles' run in Red Stick was clearly over. They should have let him go after last season. The writing was clearly on the wall and has been for a while.
And if you're at any Major program these days, winning 75% of your games is now the new minimum standard. Take any SEC schedule. If you're considered a contender in either division, there are only 3-4 games that are considered tough or true challenges. Put another way...name one loss on Tennessee's schedule outside of the "4 game gauntlet" that Vols fans would consider acceptable. There's not one. Losses in ANY of the other 8 games will have the fan base questioning the direction of the program in a heartbeat. Times have changed if you consider yourself a top program. You no longer get credit for "taking out the trash". You basically have 8 or 9 scrimmages and only 3 or 4 true tests. You're going to be judged by your record in those games. This is where Les Miles has fallen off in recent years. LSU is FAR from unique in this regard.

He forced out the lacrosse coach and made the call to cancel the season.

Richard Brodhead, Duke University president was the bigger problem, along with the administration and faculty. They basically said those guys were guilty before any facts came out. Sound eerily familiar to today's world?

I'd quibble a little bit with your characterization of the schedule, but you're pretty much right.

There are 1, maybe 2 scrimmages (Tennessee Tech, Ohio). There are 4-5 games I would describe as games you should win and don't have to necessarily play your best in, but you might lose them if you played poorly (Virginia Tech, Missouri, even App State). There are 3-4 games that you might not win, even if you do play well (Florida, Georgia, A&M, Alabama).

Well then we'd simply be quibbling over semantics! :)

But yes you got my point. Lose to anyone outside of those four games, then nobody is taking you seriously as a major program.

I definitely agree with what you have said. I think its fine for other fans to weigh in though. But it does seem to be kind of self serving to a degree as well at some point. I think the LSU and Georgia situations are very similar, I generally think 10-15 years is plenty of time... and at some point a change is good... allow some other people to have an opportunity.

I think this worked out as best it as it could after deal with Jimbo was railroaded outside of the school's hands at the end of the year. I for one have no idea how well or poor LSU does in the future, but I feel like it was an easy fire at this time.... the thrill was definitely gone all that remained was frustration. Les was given a lifeline to turn it around, it didn't happen... there is no excuse and none is really being asked for.

Simply put, easy decision, everyone appears to be moving on.... whether LSU does well in the future is almost immaterial to me.

Agreed! I Just think it's a different time. Coaches and messages have a shelf life and are going to need to be changed so that the program stays "fresh".

Actually quite a bit of parallels to Fulmer's firing in my opinion. Great guy, great recruiter, but it was clear that his best days were behind him with regards to success. It wasn't his firing that set the program back. It was the Lane Kiffin fiasco that killed us. Hopefully for Tigers fans they get this next hire right.

I will say that I think the situation's a little different for Tennessee and Georgia than it is for LSU. I think it's more critical for Tennessee and Georgia to get the HC coaching hire right than it is for LSU as recruiting is inherently easier for LSU than it is for the others. Having grown up in Louisiana I know what a unique place it is and how much pride there is about their home that's ingrown. Much easier for them to keep local talent (which is abundant) than it is for many other SEC schools. Of course I'm speaking in generalizations but LSU simply needs to avoid hiring the wrong guy more so than they need to hit a homerun. Remember that the Miles hiring after Saban left was not warmly supported and many scoffed saying that LSU had "reached hard". 12 years later.... I am very curious to see who they end up bringing in.
