Lets all get behind our Lady Vols

I'm not the one who blindly supports my teams, but this yr's edition of LVs has earned my respect including the coaching staff. (sigh) Count me in the bandwagon, and I will support the team and enjoy the ride for the full duration of our tournament plays…how long it ever lasts...

I think Holly is doing a fine job. Look at North Carolina. They have as much talent or more than we do. Our record is much better than theirs. Are they even in the top 10 anymore? GO HOLLY.

Being an assistant coach is not the same as being a head coach. Any thinking person understands that. Sounds like you just have some kind of bee up your bonnet about Holly, same as a handful of other a**hats who post here. Get over it.

You might want to better your basketball IQ. Do you even know who Bill Guthridge is??? He was an assistant to Dean Smith for 30 years and became the head coach when Dean abruptly retired. Do you know who Dean Smith is? Bill took UNC to the Final Four in 2 out of his 3 years. Doesn't that seem like a similar situation to what Holly stepped into?

This is a great OP and it's unfortunate that certain NegaVols felt the need to see to it that a thread giving the team support and accolades devolved into a whine fest. All fans should support the team and coaches, and those prone to histrionics and hyperbolic ranting should have enough wherewithal to keep their negativity to themselves or find another outlet in which to express it. This thread isn't the place.

Ivy if you think this place is not the place to post things things about the team and coaches you are wrong, that is why it is called VOLNATION. As far as avoiding negativity, then obviously you are not around here in football season, this is nothing. First off you need to remember that if it was not for football there would be no women's teams period, because football supports all the overhead cost of the AD, building maintenanceand, support staff, insurance and every other minicule cost. That said, let CBJ lose a game and the lynch mob is out with pitchforks. They want to fire him or any other coach within 25 yards of him. The comments are harsh and get personal between the posters even at times, VOL on VOL b!t(h fest. The comments about Holly are mild and reserved on here. So you have a very low threshold for commentary about the VOLS who we all love. Holly is a poor coach and I personally do not think she will ever win anything. I hope she proves me wrong, but if I am betting money on big games I am betting against Holly.

I feel your pain!! We need to get back to the final 4! I am going to stay positive and see what recruits will come in. I feel we will get there but it just seems that something is missing. We have the talent. Any ideas as to what we can do this year? How far can we go? I do like our senior leadership. Does UConn just get the better players? Or is it whT Gino does with them? I am at a lost!

I believe she was speaking about the specific thread LL started. Football supports all sports but the MBB and WBB. That amount of $$$ is why CBJ gets his feet held to the fire. So many posters et al think they could do better; if they had to make the attempt, the fail rate would probably be >99.9%. So GBO and CBJ!

My basketball IQ is just fine. Your IQ in general seems to be sorely lacking. No two situations are similar, and to expect Holly's situation to be identical to Guthridge's is not only showing a serious lack of common sense on your part, but I would argue borderline insane. Just admit it . . . you have an irrational dislike of Holly for whatever reason and as such, you are going to hunt for any number of excuses to validate that irrational dislike. Just call it for what it is and be done. Such unwarranted negativity is getting old.

This rant pretty much confirms my opinion that you are an irrational p.o.s. I'm not a Tennessee alum, but I have been a fan of Tennessee women's basketball since I was a little girl, and have spent a great deal of money over the years supporting the team. The fact is, I don't particularly care one way or the other about UT football. *shrug* You think I should grovel because football is a money maker for the university? Not going to happen, little one. Holly is not a poor coach. She's a very good coach and she's continually getting better. Who cares that you seem to have some personal issue with her? I'm sure she couldn't care less what some dumba** on a message board thinks.

Indeed. . . it never fails to amaze me at how limited some people's reading comprehension skills are. I don't expect to never see any negativity on an internet forum, but on a thread specifically meant to be positive, some posters seem almost desperate to watch things devolve into a bash fest. I honestly cannot fathom what the problem is and why certain individuals (though not all that many) seem to have such an animosity toward Holly and her staff, when, by all accounts (and by the accounts of those who actually count), she is doing a phenomenal job. Sometimes I read comments here and weep for humanity.

You're talking to someone who doesn't even know who Bruce Pearl is. Seriously. I wouldn't waste the bandwidth.

I never thought about it, but you're right the parallels are very similar. Especially since it came out that Dean Smith had been battling dementia for many years leading up to his recent death....

I know who Bruce Pearl is, nitwit. It was my bad that I didn't pay close attention to that ridiculous avatar, and I'll own that. As a matter of fact, I'm looking forward to watching the Auburn/Kentucky game tonight and hope Pearl's team can pull out a win, though the likelihood of that happening is about nil. If you want to see a waste of bandwidth, look at yourself. Personally, I think you're more than a waste of bandwidth; I think you're an outright waste of oxygen. Seriously.

Doesn't mean the outcomes are going to be similar.

I don't always agree with you, but you are logical and can express an opinion coherently. Two traits I personally admire...that's just I.:)

And I will admit...the avatar thing was funny. That does not change anything I just wrote, and it is not pertinent to what you wrote on this thread. When all else fails...use whatever weapon one can grasp.

As do I. I enjoy participating on internet forums, but I've found after many years of doing so, the baser side of human nature often comes out (I'm just as guilty as anyone). Things most of us would deem completely socially unacceptable to say to another in person can be said with abandon on an anonymous form. Sometimes that's actually a good thing, but often it's a waste of energy and brain cells. That said, one of the things I hate most in life is ignorance and stupidity, particularly the willful variety. So many people don't think, don't reason, don't understand, and far too many are abysmally incompetent when it comes to expressing themselves coherently. Sometimes I read the comments here and wonder if VolNation is hosting a private convention for idiots that those of us with more than speck of grey matter know nothing about.

Hey, I'm always willing to own up to my gaffes. I made a fool out of myself with the avatar comment. No big deal. It happens to the best of us. (Although I assure you, I really do know (and have always known) who Bruce Pearl is. :) )

It wasn't intended to be a "weapon" but it was absolutely pertinent to jkleno's point. If a Tennessee "fan" can't even identify Bruce Pearl would you really expect them to know who Bill Guthridge is? Comparisons to the men's game are a waste of time to those who don't even follow it....

I know who both Bruce Pearl and Bill Guthridge are, and knew long before you or jkleno felt the need to try to inform me. So, no dice. I'm not a Tennessee alum, so it's not anything unusual that I'm not an avid fan of the men's teams at UT. The sport I enjoy most is women's basketball; everything else is secondary. When it comes to women's basketball, I consider myself a diehard Lady Vols fan, and have been since long before I was even thinking about which university I would eventually attend (and long thought about attending UT because of that connection until I grew up a bit and realized I had the ability to go to a school like Harvard, so, well . . . not being an athlete, that was a ridiculously easy choice for me). When it comes to men's basketball, I like to watch a good game, but I don't really pull for any team in particular (though I imagine if I absolutely had to pick one, I'd probably go with UVA simply due to family (though not my own personal) connections . . .).

I think UConn not only gets better players (similar to Bama football, just "cherry-pick" the best), but also Geno is the best coach in the game. Double Whammy.

All right, here's my book and short answer to your question: Irrelevant to topic.

Agreed, for any comparison there are too many differences in the game between MBB and WBB. I much prefer WBB (although I do pull for the UT men, and I do love JoshR...a class act).

I don't (didn't) know who Guthridge is (was) and don't really care. That has nothing to do with UT WBB. Bottom line...what does a men's basketball coach's situation or one's ability to recognize an avatar have to do with anything ivy was addressing? I know the comparisons attempted by jkleno were assistant coach becoming head coach and dementia, but there are just too many unrelated factors between the two situations to either tie that example to UT and CHW or for the comparison to be valid.

I do not find the above a relevant, well reasoned, or pertinent argument. JMO.

FWIW, Smith retired in 1997 (googled him). I do not know if he suffered from dementia at that time; I have been told by medical personnel that patients with dementia generally have a much shorter life expectancy than 17 years. (Google again "The life expectancy of a person with dementia is unpredictable, and the disease can progress for up to around 10 years.") However, one never knows when the exception to the rule will occur. Was he diagnosed with dementia upon or near retirement? Even if he was, there are too many differing factors to attempt a valid comparison between the two situations.

As to recognizing a BP avatar, I certainly recognized it. I would not claim that the ability to do so would have anything to do with an ability to discuss, with a high degree of knowledge, swimming, softball, soccer, basketball, or a myriad of other topics . (However, I think ivy did know who BP was and just missed on the avatar...not pertinent either way.)

I never mentioned dementia. Bill Guthridge was an assistant for 30 years under Dean Smith. Sound familiar? He lead the Heels to 2 Final Fours in 3 years in his first HC job. Why would you not compare men's basketball to women's?? Coaching is coaching. Court is the same, 10 players, same length of game, 3 point line is the same distance. You just can't admit CHW has been a major disappointment and we are a "shell" of our past glory.

Why would anyone who has any common sense "admit" that Holly has been a major disappointment, when she has actually done (and continues to do) a fantastic job? I'm certainly not stupid enough to "admit" such a thing. Why do you expect that Holly's career trajectory would directly mirror Guthridge's? That's asinine. Just because things worked out one way for Guthridge doesn't automatically mean things are going to work out exactly the same way for Holly. The fact is, Holly inherited a program already in decline; that "shell" you talk about had already started to harden before she took over. She's righted the ship, cracked that shell, and continues to improve. I'm really not sure what you want, or what you expect, but whatever it is, I don't think it can be located anywhere in the real world.

You're ridiculous.
