Difficult to do when playing a meaningless game

I vehemently disagree!!! Playing in a NY6 Bowl Game is not meaningless!

Thousands of Vol fans are spending thousands of dollars to travel and cheer on the team they love! A team that has had an incredible season, especially compared to the past decade. It's been over 20 years since TN has been in the Orange Bowl. If the game were meaningless, the university wouldn't send its football team and thousands of fans wouldn't attend. I promise you the players who are making the trip to Miami are pumped up and hungry for another VICTORY!

I’m really not trying to sound like a smart alec here, because I can see you’ve not been on the board long so you may not know. The blue font indicates sarcasm, so the poster you’re replying to agrees with you. Maybe he added the blue after your reply though idk

It means a lot of money to the University and others and the experience/fun is important to the fans willing to spend the money. The experience is very exciting for the players that worked hard all season long to get to a major bowl or playoff, (I guess they could feel very let down after being very close to going to the playoffs a month ago). Win or lose, it won’t lessen the players experience of a very successful season capped off with a trip to the Orange Bowl, it will be something they will remember all their lives. A win or loss will not affect my appreciation for what the team has accomplished this year!!!

This game is gonna be a preview of next season, with no hooker,Tillman, or hyatt. Really looking forward to seeing how our guys step up!

Now, that's an intelligent way to look at this bowl game. As opposed to whining about the opt-outs, or employing auto-Milton hating.

I will watch, of course. I hope the Vols win, of course.

But, I don’t know that I’ve ever been as “ho hum whatever” about a game before.

Many say it is not meaningless, but my give a damn is screaming —- blah, so what.

Why blue font? How many players are opting out?
I’m not sure what Bowl games have become. With opt outs, they are no longer representative of the team that played the season. Maybe we just need to look at them as the first game of next season. Red shirts get some big game exposure. Everybody gets extra practices giving the coaches time to see what they have for next year. And the fans have a reason for a party. The bowls are going to change, just not sure how.
‘Of course, the expanded CFP will make for more meaningless Bowls

I don't really care but it's funny to me to look back at the past decade plus and remember it being crucial that we made a bowl and oh Lord the meltdowns if we didn't.

Now....well, you know where I'm going.

It's Christmas and New Year's season. Tennessee is playing football for the last time for 9 months. We could end the season 11-2. It's a major bowl, not the Music City or whatever that one is called that Florida lost in last night, we could be them...have been.

Ho hum?

Whatever.

So,for those who are whining about not being excited about this "meaningless" NY6 bowl, let me ask you a question. Are you upset because you truly think the Orange Bowl is meaningless, or because we fell short of the playoffs this year? Most of you would have been ecstatic to be in this bowl for the last couple of decades, but now it is so boring to be here. Not a single one of you thought we had a real chance at a big time bowl game in CJH's 2nd year, but because we had a fantastic year, it isn't enough. Why is it so hard for some members of this fanbase to enjoy something positive happening.

The 3 best players on the team, two of which are the Biletnikoff winner, and a Heisman candidate, not playing in the game is why some are ‘meh’ about the game.

It’s something different than we fell in love with this year. The preview of next year is intriguing, but, still —- not the same.

Hooker’s injury really took a lot of wind out of the sails.

There will be a lot of changes between now and September 2023. We will field a very good team, but we still do not know the details of who will do what.

Id watch the Vols in the Toilet Bowl against William&Mary with William not playing. Yea, its not as dynamic as what might have been but this awesome team has heart and soul and deserves this bowl to enjoy a terrific season, to have fun, and to go in there without pressure, lay it all out on the line and kick some tiger butt!

It’s only become meaningless because of players and money. Former players before all this BS would give their right testicul th play in the Orange Bowl! Now it’s all about me attitudes!

So it only ok to feel good about this team and feel good about the season when NOTHING goes wrong? Tillman has only played in a couple of games this year. Hyatt opting out is disappointing, and Hooker’s injury was sad. To completely give up on the rest of the team and not care about the ending to one of the best seasons in two decades is odd at best. How does this team and staff handle this game with its adversity? Have they prepared the younger players to be ready for next year? Will Milton find the accuracy he desperately needs to find?

If these aren't reasons to be pumped about the game, why watch at all?

I really don't understand the thoughts that the rest of the team doesn't deserve our support because 3 of the 22 starters aren't going to be there. This is completely mind boggling to me! 2 of those 3 are out for injuries, so would not have played anyway. We have proven replacements for the receivers already playing. The only one that might bite us is QB. If Milton can hit some of those wide open receivers running downfield, we will obliterate Clemson. Stop finding reasons for failure and support this team!

All of that, and a lot of exposure and revenue for the school and program. And a lot of players will be putting on the pads for the last time before getting on with their post-college lives.

Fans who take this stuff way too personally and seriously will continue to use the straw man "meaningless" argument to marginalize the realities of what bowl games like this are about at this point.

Agreed. If Clemson had also lost their key players I’d feel better about it.
