Lil Wayne playing the guitar

Most of what I listen to is southern rap. It is about being proud of where your from. However that is just my current top 5, my favorite rapper of all time is Tupac, and he is from Cali.
Well, I'm from the south also, but I remember seeing live rap shows in the late 80's and early 90's when rappers actually had to have talent. I was in Detroit in 1994 at the height of MC Eiht's career and saw him get booed off stage when his DJ's system broke down. The only thing that worked was his mic. The crowd was chanting "FREESTYLE! FREESTYLE!"... He froze up and walked off and was rudely booed off stage. That was the last I had ever heard if MC Eiht.

The same would happen to Lil Wayne if he ever had to just rock with a microphone and no beats or hooks to save him.

Lil wayne can definitely freestyle on the spot. Watch this interview where the guy asks him to freestyle and he does. He starts freestyling with no beat right at 1:38.

That wasn't a freestyle. He asked him to spit a few of his favorite bars.

These are freestyles (off the head, nothing written). Just spontaneous, off the top. M&M ain't even my favorite, but these are some classic punchlines...

The point is, say he is on stage and their is a technical malfunction and he is asked to spit anyway(as in your example), he could do it.

He couldn't freestyle. He might be able to spit one of his old verses, but if the crowd is asking you to pop one off the top of the head and just flow, Lil Wayne would get booed and run off the stage... Right about that same time (probably a year or so later), I saw the Fugees live (before they blew up). Lauryn Hill and Wycleff spent the majority of that show freestyling and going back and forth interacting with the audience. That is the kind of performance/show I'm talking about. Those are the way rap shows used to be. Nowadays, these young bucks just scribble some garbage on a note pad and run in the booth. That is weak... very weak. There is a reason why they called Jay-Z "One Take Hov". He could hear a beat for about 10 minutes vibe to it, and then step in the booth and have a song finished in one take... with nothing written down.

your point?
He threw up an example of a "freestyle" by Lil Wayne. I pointed out to him that it was written. I also had to point out to him that if a rapper can't freestyle, then he is really not a skilled rapper.

I don't like all rappers that freestyle, but most of them are decent and they have good flows and good lyrics (Redman is the one exception that can freestyle but rarely has a song with a clear message/story).

I always assumed freestyling to be like improv comedy, in that the artist isn't really thinking it up on the spot, but still amazing that a skilled one can remember that many verses. That doesn't mean though one that can't freestyle sucks, though. Who's to say they just cannot remember it or something?

I didn't say sucks, I said "not a skilled rapper". T.I. I don't think can freestyle, but I can deal with him every now and then. I'm not sure if Chuck D of Public Enemy could freestyle. But they at least make up for that by having a decent flow/cadence and tell a story. Lil Wayne is weak in all areas except hooks and beats. Just like freestyle ability isn't the end all/be all of what makes a rapper good, the same is true for rappers that just have beats and catchy hooks. What is annoying is that some of the rap audience now focuses so much on beats/hooks and they pay no attention to what the rapper is actually saying.

There are plenty of people that think up lyrics on the spot. Even guys that flop and don't have record deals are able to come up with a clever punchline based on what another rapper said in a battle a few moments earlier.

This is a perfect example of a rapper freestyling after listening to what the rapper before him said and reacting to the other people on stage...

YouTube - Jin vs Skyzoo

There's no way Jin could have written his verses before the show when he didn't even know what the other rapper was going to say or what he was going to wear on stage...

sorry to keep posting, but Rasputin, what do you think of Serius Jones?

The only thing I've seen from him is the battle he had with Jin. I wasn't like blown away by Jones or anything, though. Vo is another good rapper that managed to emerge from BET Freestyle Friday. Not many have been good on that trash show, but Vo is actually a good freestyler (and he's from the Dirty South).

Agree, and while i have not listened to rap in a long time I think UGK cannot be left out.

Agreed on Eightball........

Time waits for no one
But you could never told me that
Bowling ball nuts and a gat
But not enough time for me to react
Cheddar in my possession
Chillin in the Expedition
Chiefin wants stop my stressin
On the low attractin no attention
Who in the f***
Got nuts enough
To come test me
Not a soul
I pack a tool
I'm unjackable
Cause I'm always on my toes

These cats now just don't come with it like that.

Ive been listening to the Carter 3 all day. If you are a fan a rap, you will like this CD whether you like lil wayne or not. I already have the full version, if anybody is interested.

I plan on buying it when it actually comes out, because it is a classic. Wait till you hear that 10 minute song called misunderstood. Makes you think.
