Lineup and minute distribution in 2018-19

I thought Lawson started as a freshmen, and they were running a 3 guard lineup. I recall Lawson being benched in favor of Clement early in the season because of her tendency to get in foul trouble in the first half, and only recall her starting in the NC game because Clement got hurt.

I would prefer to see Rennia play at the wing instead of the high post. I don't think she's as sturdy as Nared was, and could see her getting worn down pretty quickly. I'd like to see the following lineup:

PG - Westbrook (25 min), Massengill (15 min)
SG - Jackson (30 min), Green (10 min)
SF - Davis (30 min), Green (10 min)
PF - Collins (20 min), Brown (10 min), Harris (10 min)
C - Green (25 min), Kushkituah (15 min)

I'm sure PF looks iffy, but even if they just play defense and rebound, I'd like to think those 3 players could keep things under control at that position.

Amb3096,

This is what I think the lineup will look like as well. I think the staff definitely keeps Rennia Davis at the 3/wing as she seems more comfortable there and can build on a pretty good freshman campaign. The post players need to step it up so that Davis will not be forced to play out of position. With more minutes and a lot of accountability, somebody will emerge and maybe one of the newbies will surprise. I look for both Cheridene and KK to be improved this year. Sometimes players respond when they don’t have anyone to hide behind and know that expectations are high of them. Trust me, the coaching staff has probably already let it be known to both of them a thousand times that they have to fill the voids left by Russell and Nared.

Davis at the four would be a mismatch. She needs to add physicality to her game. We are now the finesse Lady Vols, rather than Lady Vols.

Davis will proll play the 2, 3, 4, and 5 this year, but it all depends on her level of physicality, if she is a finesse player, it will be a long year.

Holly will move Davis to get the matchup she likes.

Here's to more physical team, a team who doesn't mind putting a body on someone.

Nicky!!! toughen em up! If Davis is not physical or embrace or initiate contact, it will be a long year.

We shall see if Davis takes the step forward, as an All American type player or...

And having four guards on the floor is fine, especially with Davis at the four or Green or KK at the 5.

4 guard line up won the last Championship!

This is going to be an interesting team. Rae Burrell is a definite sleeper in the 2018 class expect she will shine in college. She has a tremendous handle and can shoot the three. Just watching her on film don't see a weakness in her game. I expect she will get playing time on the perimeter. The way she can pass the ball, shoot the three and make her free throws I see her being on the floor quite a bit at least 15 a game.
Massengill is an all around player as well. I don't think she shoots it from the perimeter as well as Burrell but she is a heady player that make great decisions with the ball.
Zarielle Green has a solid all around game will be valuable off the bench makes shots gets to the basket.
Amira Collins is a player that I expect will not get a lot of minutes per game. I think with C. Green, KK, and Lou are all going to be ahead of her and limit her playing time this season.
My take on roster and playing time:

PG- Westbrook and Massengill about 20 and 20 here. JMO would be better for Westbrook to move to SG or Point forward type position but she wants to play PG and Holly won't buck her. She has to cut down her turnovers and get more in synch with teammates on passes.
SG-Jackson and Burrell this will be our three point shooting position both these girls can shoot it. Burrell is better off the dribble and also the better passer and ball handler. I see this evening out as the season progresses Jackson 24 Burrell 16.
C-C. Green should be the starter here. She should be ready to be huge in the post. KK will play a lot as well she should be ready to be a solid post player for us. We also have Lou Brown who can step out and shoot the three. I don't know who will end up getting the most minutes here. I think all three are about even going into the season with a slight edge to Green. The player that steps up will play the most. No prediction on minutes played here this is a wait and see. Amira Collins will get limited minutes this season I believe. She is an excellent rebounder and can score inside, but the experience factor will probably go against her this season.
PF- We could see any of the centers above play here or Holly may opt to go with Davis who has easily grown an inch and has an all around game. If Davis doesn't play here she will play the three and regardless look for 30 minutes plus per game from Davis she will be on the floor a lot. Our go to player this season. I think she will be one of the top players in the SEC.
WF- Davis, Z. Green, L. Brown could all get some time playing here. I don't know who will start or play backup but my top nine are:

Davis
Westbrook
Green
Jackson
Massengill
Burrell
Z. Green
KK
L. Brown

The unanswered question is how well each new player adjusts to playing defense and running the floor. Who can inhibit the top point guards? Who can stop the penetration , dribble drives; and so on. Perhaps the best question will not be who is playing in November - December but February and March?

All the sports announcers do verifications of "players to watch: Mine is Kasiyahna Kushkituah, if she is in game shape , she can play with her back to the basket and takes up space and won't be easily sealed by posting centers. Hope she believes she has something to prove as a sophomore.

This will be the first team in a while to have true depth at all positions. I too hope the posts are ready this year. We have the size to fill lanes and box effectively. While it helps to be very tall, there are a lot of great rebounders who do not have the traditional size. The real question is whether we will have a reliable outside shooting game. If so, and with the demonstrated ability to get to the basket, this team will be a tough out.

Not sure what type of player KK will turn out to be? I think her and Green are the wide body type that are hard to move and even if you foul them they can still shoot with success! If Collins turns out to be another Birdick ? That would be ok also?

Looking forward to Key coming and giving us another Candice like player? I hope ! 🤔

That may be the only time that Key's and Parker's names are mentioned in the same sentence.

Sitting her thinkin, is Westbrook going to re-begin the trend of Lady Vols having a true lead guard.

Hmmmm one of our #1 recruits having an All American and successful career (final 4s), hmmm being a first team unanimous All SEC selection.

I am curious to see the growth of Westbrook's game, is it #1 player in the nation kinda step forward from the guard spot.

Defense, Rebounding and Good guard play win championships.

Are we healthy?

If Massengill catches on quickly, I would like to see her at the point and Westbrook on the wing.
One of the biggest concerns is KK. Is she going to be in playing shape?

I like Westbrook at the point. She is a big guard, with her size, Dena Head, type of build, she needs to use her size more, be a more confident player. Massengil will be good, and in the three or four guard lineup they are all on the wing.

We don't need to get caught up who's playing which position cos now offenses and sets are more fluid, player are not pigeon hole to one spot. Teams are putting the five best player on the floor, hopefully one of them has height to defend the five spot. Notre Dame won the championship with no point guard. You just need good guards, and for the first time in a long time, we have the potential to have good guards at 3 to 4 to five spots (depth, young tho), which should mean good guard play, or improved guard play.

KK, playing shape worries me, but she doesn't have to carry a heavy load and its a long season. I would like to see her get better, get tougher, as the season goes on, and we have three to four bodies we can throw at the five spot. Next year, my expectation for KK goes higher. In the brief moments she played last year, I love her physicality. Hopefully she improved her fitness, cos she does eat up space. Her playing time, will let us know if she is in shape or not.

This year, I'm hoping Green plays with more poise, and more confidence, I do like her physicality too and be our Anchor downlow!

J. Masssengill is 6-0 also so she is a big guard to. I just hope Westbrook worked on her ball handing skills. We all saw when she was pressed she turned it over or they stole it from her. I think with Massengill it should take a lot of pressure of Westbrook. As Holly said Massengill at 6-0 handles the ball very well.

It wasn't a comparison. I expect we will see them both on the court together.

No, I hope Westbrook worked on her mindset. The skills are there.

Here's too good guard play!

Oh no i was not pushing back against you i apologize if i did. I like both as well i look for Holly to use Westbrook on the wing more to. I will say this KK and Green must stay out of foul trouble because we don`t know the progress of Harris or Collins.

Westbrook 30 mins
Jackson 28
C. Green. 25
Davis 32
Still not sure what we do at the 4. I have a feeling that Holly will go big at that position rather than 3 guards and Davis. We shall see.

Noted and no offense taken. Yeah, Harris I am not really counting on her to give us solid contribution but hopefully Mimi can have a Bashaara or Glory type of Freshmen year, off the bench.

I don't want us to be worried about foul trouble, I feel we are timid defensively because of the numbers, depth, or worrying about fouls, which is overrated, play the game, each game is gonna be called differently, a smart team adapts, and more body contact, bumps, less reaching with our hands. We have to play smart, and aggressive, Lady Vols Basketball.

The starting lineup will tell us a lot this year, for the first time in a long time, it seems like it will go to the players that earn it.

E
Zay or Mas
MEME
RENNIA
GREEN

First sub would be based upon the matchup against Rennia, if Rennia is handling her own at the four spot, it will be a guard.

If Rennia is getting overpowered, Holly will prolly play her at 3, we will play through Rennia this year, lets see how she handles the attention.

Prolly will be our best defensive lineup to start the season. Here's to solid years from Green, KK, Collins, and Harris, two of them have to be productive this year rebounds, putbacks, and solid post defense protecting the rim. But I also think, like everyone else, we will see Rae at the four spot, it all depends on her board play.
Wistfully thinking Green is going to have monster season to put herself in the draft.

Right now the chess match is matching up against Notre Dame.

Does anyone know the coaching positions or players assignment?

Dean: Post or Forward or just Post?
Etc

I agree with you on the lineup as for Collins i`m not sure she can be Bashaara or Glory. The problem with Collins is she don`t have the lift and at times just throws the ball up at the basket. I watched her go up against Malu Tshitenge-Mutombo 6-3 twice and Malu Tshitenge-Mutombo length won out. But i`m sure Collins worked hard over the summer to improve in those areas. Also you are correct the wildcard player is Rae she can flat out play.

totally speculation but Graves maximized her abilities often against taller and better lift opponents by her tenacity - if Collins exhibits similar traits on both offensive and defense she will be an asset. And Graves didn't look for the 15' until her senior year.

I saw Collins game improved during last season, and I think she will put in the work. If she just get on the boards, good things will happen for her. I mean some of our best post players didn't have much lift, Nicky, Pashen, Abby, etc. lol

Yeah, I think she's more of Bashaara type player than Glory, but that's where I think her size will help her on this level, for the most part all of our bigs, carving out space.

Yes, I love Rae's game, feel like everyone about her potential, its going to be the pace and physicality, the nerves, and playing on the biggest stage. curious to see what type of works she puts in.

Rennia and E, play like the two best players in the country, and Meme plays like a senior then it will give the others time to adjust.

Also, feel Holly will play her starters till their tired or unproductive, 5 to 7 players needs a lot of time on the court together, E, Rennia and Jackson getting 30 plus minutes.

Here's to players getting in the gym, going forward. WE need All Americans, not average players.

Which player out of the last two classes you think will be All Americans before their career is over?

Does anyone know the coaching positions or players assignment?

I will not disagree with you and to be fair Collins has been working on her range beyond 15 feet and that`s a plus.

I hope that Holly is a able to give the starters some quality rest this year. Playing your star players 37 minutes a game tells me that the coach has little confidence in the bench. I think the bench will be much better this year and as good as we have had for a while even if they are young.
