The translation presented by the official Islamic Republic News Agency has been challenged by Arash Norouzi, who says the statement "wiped off the map" was never made and that Ahmadinejad did not refer to the nation or land mass of Israel, but to the "regime occupying Jerusalem". Norouzi translated the original Persian to English, with the result, "the Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."[11] Juan Cole, a University of Michigan Professor of Modern Middle East and South Asian History, agrees that Ahmadinejad's statement should be translated as, "the Imam said that this regime occupying Jerusalem (een rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods) must [vanish from] the page of time (bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad).[12] According to Cole, "Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to 'wipe Israel off the map' because no such idiom exists in Persian." Instead, "he did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse."

Why don't you look into the matter yourself rather than hiding your head in the sand. There's plenty to read, and it's easy to find if you really do want to know the truth.

So why doesn't he deny that he said it? Your own article talks about how when asked the question, he babbles on about something else, and refuses to acknowledge or deny it.

And I doubt that Israel bases their foreign policy on whether or not that's what a sentence translates as... there have been several other inflammatory comments. Kind of reaching here.

Propaganda leads us to believe Ahmedinajad made that threat. He did no such thing. He said "their regime will vanish from the page of time." This is the accepted translation. Pro-Israeli propaganda turned it into that threat you referenced.

Yet he avoids the "meaning" of the statement and focuses on the interpretation. What the heck else does "Their regime will VANISH from the page of time", other than wiping out the State of Israel?
He also avoids responding to the fact that every thing changes if Iran gets the nuke. But, by all means, lets worry about the money and not the lives of our allies. Talk about haveing your head up your arse.

i wouldnt bother.. i tried to explain in another thread about how Ahmedinajad's quote was badly mistranslated. he said the zionist regime will vanish from time like the soviet regime did in russia, he never even mentioned the word wipe or map.

The semantics there are a little silly. That's like someone quoting me as saying "I plan on killing her" then me clarifying by saying "No, what I said was 'I plan on eating her dead body,' I never said anything about killing her."

What changes? No country besides the US has ever used a nuke. We got away with it because we were the only ones who had it. I believe the cold war was the longest period of peace in European history. I think Iran getting a nuke likely means we never go to war with them. Neither would Israel. That is the likely result. Two nations with nukes have never gone to war with each other. Not even USA and USSR. Our relations with Iran are still salvageable.

Well, if he said the words I guess we must believe it. No terrorist leader has EVER lied to the media. And saying that in his mind Israel never existed in the first place negates all the other threats. My bad.
