How can there be such big disparities in these rankings? Rivals has us at # 9.....ESPN #18.....24/7 # 15. I just randomly looked at Wisconsin and ESPN has them # 26...where Rivals has 'em in the 30's. Illinois is # 68 in Rivals....but # 48 with ESPN. I just looked those two cuz I know a couple guys who are big fans of each of those programs....but such a WIDE difference in rankings between these services?

Thought they were part of ESPN, so no surprise there.
Yeah. They use ESPN's. We aren't even part of the discussion at all in their ESD segment....but that is a huge disparity between one outfit having us at # 9 and then another at # 18. Whatever. It is what it is.

Common understanding seems to be that different services consider things like which camps a recruit attends, and which schools offer, or accept their commitments, and all to varying degrees. I tend to watch the 247 rankings since they use the composite score, so it's not just their own evaluations.

You have to wonder if it has more to do with differentiation. If ESPN, 247 were the same they wouldn’t get the same traffic. Now, we look at all three, debate which is better and mention them and then others visit the sites. Creates more views. Helps them sell more ads and creates a bigger market.

I was kinda hoping we'd be a big story on the network...especially SEC Network..but then i remembered they are an ESPN outfit....and we aren't being talked about at all. They are praising Dan Mullen now and interviewing him...haven't even heard 'em mention the Vols. Well....we gotta prove it on the field first before we get any of the press we want. That's just how it goes. I think it would help our recruits to see them being mentioned....not being ignored like this....and any potential recruits.

NSD preempted by medical marathon. When its was over, just happened to see a media member who said "you didn't miss anything."
Huh??

Hilarious they’re praising Mullen, Bc CBS Sports listed Florida as one of its losers of ESD lol. Goes to show it’s entirely subjective

Sec network finally did mention Vols...w one of the guys saying we finished the day strong like we did our season. I prefer Rivals ranking. Top 10....but I don't wanna be delusional at the same time. I'd say we did pretty good...and as we see w Wisconsin...as long as we get the right guys for what we're doing...its all good.

Watching SEC network..they don't have us in the top 10. They use ESPN's rankings which have our class at # 18. Yes...it seems ESPN really does hate us.

I don't think they 'hate us', but there is definitely a cultural thing at ESPN to blow up our shortcomings and ignore (largely) our success. The people who began that culture are largely gone, but it lives on in the organization. Culture eats most other things for breakfast.

That said, Chris Fowler can eat a bowl of STFU for all eternity. What an #$$.

What did Fowler say?

What did Fowler say?

You must be a youngster. From Wikipedia:

"After Charles Woodson won the 1997 Heisman Trophy over Tennessee's Peyton Manning, Tennessee fans blamed ESPN and in particular, Fowler, who had emceed the award ceremony and handed the trophy to Woodson. Fowler received abuse from Tennessee fans (and he described the reaction as "trailer park frenzy" on a radio show), and GameDay avoided shooting on the Tennessee campus for several years that followed."

"Won" could easily be stated as 'was awarded after a massive hype and lobbying effort by ESPN', and "handed" could easily be stated 'swooned like a cheerleader and was obviously very pleased'.

I think Manning was a victim of the movement that "it was time" to give the award to someone other than the usual QB or RB, like a defensive player. I remember talk on TV about that in the weeks leading up to the presentation. So that year's Heisman became about something other than the best player.

Its just weird how all over the place our ranking is. Guys here have brought up interesting reasons why that is. At the end of the day the WORST I have seen is 18 and highest 9. Big difference. 24/7 is the one I have primarily always looked at. We are 15 there. Butchs 2nd year we were 4th...and his 3rd year 7th....then we dropped to 14..then 17....but it didn't help us win big. So much is the program...coaching etc. I keep bringing up Wisconsin cuz they are great example. Always flirting with playoffs...as one of 4 best in nation...but haven't even had a class in the top 30 for a decade...BUT have been consistent big winners. I do like Rivals having us in top 10 though....but if the worst ranking we get is 18...that's still not horrible. But this SEC is a friggin monster conference.

I can tell you from experience, these player rankings are, at least in part, a reward for spending thousands of dollars to camp/showcase with certain organizations. Those who spend more money to promote and be associated with those organizations, get higher rankings. Those who decide it’s a sham and are happy with where they are, and the offer they have, will fall in the rankings. Therefore, rankings will be based on different camps/organizations, and those who haven’t been paid enough will give players lower rankings, or even begrudgingly rank a player who is undoubtedly one of the strongest in the country but didn’t pay them. So honestly, don’t get too caught up in rankings.

I agree with you, it is just that ESPN was leading that charge unabashedly. And as I recall, there were some subtle and some not so subtle digs at Manning all year log as they tried to build their case.

I have not watched nor cared about the Heisman race since then. And I have a slow burning dislike of ESPN, which I'm forced to endure because they carry so many games.

Not sure if brought up, but do we have any new recruits that might have academic issues when time comes to step on campus?

Can't get any more truthful than this.
