Long SEC season ahead I'm afraid

Showme, a little more strength and experience sure can't hurt. However, you are right in that UT has very few players if any that would start for an upper tier SEC team this year. Some of this could be hidden but not when coupled with a weak pitching staff.

Serrano blistered the staff in the KNS today when he said, "if some of these pitchers are scared of SEC play then maybe they shouldn't have signed up for this." I think his patience is wearing thin, especially with the inability to throw strikes.

I've argued with many on the subject of in state talent. There is great talent in this state hands down. Most who claim there isn't more than likely are looking at a computer recruiting site and are not out in the trenches watching games. There's plenty of HS talent...and the talent coming up thru the youth travel circuit is really good at this time. Meaning the talent is only getting better.

This talk about Vandy taking all of UT's in-state players is not really founded in fact. Look at Vandy's roster, only 1-2 position starters are from TN and only 1 weekend starting pitcher. UT needs to (and is) leverage CDS's connection in California - Similar to what Vandy has in the New England states - and continue to recruit across the entire SE. i.e. Stewart and Jackson. Next year's class has these traits as well.

Would love to save this thread and re-post it back to the top in 2 years when this year's freshman crop are juniors.

This is very telling and should be a concern at this point. No mention of Tennessee.

This talk about Vandy taking all of UT's in-state players is not really founded in fact. .

Vandy has made a name for themselves with these names:

price
Gray
Minor
Cotham

And now Miller and Phieffer

All arms from Tennessee. Those elite arms from this state will continue to go there as long as money is the way it is with need based aid. They will always cherry pick the very best arms from the state.

I cannot think of one instate arm that tenn has out recruited vandy for in the last five years. Has there been one??

Add Sheffield, Sheffield, and Stone to the list in the coming years (Though the Sheffield's aren't likely to go to college)

Did Vanderbilt recruit Horne from Columbia? He signed with Tennessee but was asked to leave early last year.

This may have been discussed before but do we know specifics of his offer here vs. at Vandy?

Also a guess for the trivia question... Clayton Gant?

I have posted before that I have a number of hs coaching friends as I was an umpire a few years back. The story going around the hs ranks is that stone was given nearly 100per to go to vandy and yes none of that was baseball money.

Don't know on gant.

No.

Most people don't realize the older Sheffield was committed to Todd Raleigh before he was fired.

I know Stone originally committed to UT after Serrano was hired but I had never heard that the older Sheffield was committed to UT.

The older Sheffield will have to turn down a lot of money if he is going to play college ball.

Neither Sheffield makes it to college IMO although nobody is better than Corbin at getting those kids to school. The younger one is better

Really hoping Clemsong forces Leggett out soon and makes a run at Corbin. I know clemson fans are starting to get restless, and Corbin spent a good bit of time there as an assistant.

That would be huge but I am not sure he would go. He has it made there. He has turned down A number of big names before. I know that place is special to him but I doubt he would go.

I agree he probably wouldn't go, but since that is probably one of the more likely scenarios for him to leave it would be nice for it to arise and force him to say no. Would also help in the fact that it would hurt USCjr.

I might stress how the lack of experience on the mound really shows up on the road (as it did this weekend) but other than that, this post is spot on.

It's a young team with many guys thrown in over their heads. Sometimes, they look like they can get it done and other times they will look like a bunch of freshmen.

UT has a great coaching staff and many of the pieces are here.......they just need a little time on the field and in the weight room to reach the upper levels of the SEC.

Wow finally a post which is spot on!!! youngest team in the country people, wait another year, then talk your nonsense! a bunch of non baseball minded people talking nonsense! Youngest in the country, here let me say it again, YOUNGEST in the country. Either get behind them or go cheer on something you know a little bit about, like the beer pong team.

Who is this directed at? Is someone here not knowledgeable enough for you? Posters in here are pretty much all baseball people. This is the SEC and I think most everyone has tried to seek out positives in this young group of kids, but the search isn't easy. I like the future, but I really would be okay with winning now. Not winning for years has taken a toll on all of us and we are trying to stay as positive as we can. Patience is admittedly not as easy when you've been watching UT baseball for the past 5 years. But there's no need to suggest that we don't know the game or that we aren't rooting these kids on.

Correction, That was directed towards those who are suggesting that DS i'snt a good coach because of our win lost record, that's just nonsense! Or those who are implying we don't have the right guys, plz, if you're a baseball guy, you can't make that comment knowing we have 18 freshmen playing in a conf like the SEC. If you're one of those guy's, then yes im directing the previous post towards you. If you're not, sorry to lump you into my previous post, didn't mean to imply or lump everyone into it. Lots of great posts by knowledgeable people!

Haha, we just ignore people that obviously have no clue. Pay them no mind, and certainly don't get worked up over it.

Uh...I didn't say Vandy was taking all the talent. So I'm not really sure what you're getting at.

Haha! So the cure for UTs baseball woes is to hope that Corbin finds a different dugout to spit it? Hilarious.

Nope. The cure is to keep them from having twice as many scholarships as the rest of the SEC. There is a reason they are number 1 in recruiting every year and its not because they have been to Omaha multiple times since they haven't. They are the biggest choke artist in college baseball.
