We need someone who can throw heat. It seems like the teams that are winning in the CWS all have 2 or 3 guys that can pump it up to 95, 96, 97 if they have to. We have a couple of guys that can hit 91 or 92, but that gets feasted upon by the better teams.

We'll get there. I was a little surprised how effective our guys were during the regular season. Heflin was incredible and he maxed out around 90. Hunley too. You can credit Frank Anderson for that and Tony Vitello for putting them in situations to be able to succeed. We have some guys out there that can dial it up, but a 95mph fastball isn't everything. You need movement and a second plus pitch. You need to be able to locate your pitches to be more effective. More talent is coming and you can count on Frank Anderson getting the most out of it.

Not sure anything comes from it, but Tre Morgan and Dylan Crews might seek new homes with Maineri retiring. LSU expecting to have a lot of kids transfer out. Rumors about Tre Morgan liking Knoxville circulating. Again, nothing may come of it, but Houston Kress backed it up on his show.

I have a hard time believing it actually happens, but I’ve been told they like what’s going on in Knoxville

That would be an appropriate settlement for trying to poach our coach.

I cannot imagine Tre Morgan coming here, especially after the way our fans were ragging on him all season hahaha.

But, hey I would welcome that dude with open arms. He is a bonafide STUD. Add him to the returning players next year and you'd have a pre-season Top 5 team easily.

I agree on most of what you said. Location of pitches and accuracy as well as knowing what pitch to call in certain situations can make you a successful pitcher. But there is no substitute for gas with some movement on it. Especially in late innings when hands, arms and legs are getting fatigued on the batters.

But heck, Greg Maddux had an incredible career and he could barely touch 90.

Tidwell can throw heat. And as he gets stronger by next year he'll be throwing some heat.

Yes and no.

I'll use Tidwell as an example. I watched practically every pitch he threw this year. I thought the first month or so he was pressing and was trying to over power hitters. His velocity was 95-96 and at times 97. It wasn't until he learned to throw his off speed pitches for strikes and develop a change up that he took off. His velocity was also a tad slower at more like 93/94 and 95 when he wanted to juice it up. I have zero doubts that's when he turned the corner this year in his development. Give coach Anderson the credit for recognizing that. Interesting that yesterday was his worse outing in a couple months and if you looked, his velocity was in the 95-97 range.

The advantage to velocity is you have a bigger margin for error compared to throwing 90. You might get away with a fastball down the middle were as something 89-90 could be crushed.

Having said that, Tennessee needs a closer that can come in for 1 or 2 innings at the most and shut it down. Being able to throw 95-96 would help that.

Tidwell throws heat, but it's not all about the fastball. I don't think Abbott at Virginia and Bednar at MSU (struck out 15) were throwing upper 90's. They were getting some movement on their pitches.

Had a fascinating conversation with a scout about pitching. Ty Madden at Texas throws upper 90's and his changeup was nasty at mid 80's. But Madden throws with less spin rate than others. Less spin rate means the ball doesn't move as much (for strikeouts). Guys can size it up more. However, less spin rate means the ball doesn't get as much lift on contact either. It was explained to me that Madden's fastball is kind of like trying to hit a bowling ball (heavy). That's why he is a top 15 type pick. Just very interesting to understand.

Work fast. Change speeds. Throw strikes.

That's what we need, and so does everyone else.

This was posted on SECRant by a reputable poster:

Poster on another board said Elander was talking to a group of boosters at the Marriott last night and said they are adding 4 SEC guys including one guy with “big time name recognition”. The pitcher from Mizzou and catcher from Kentucky seem like done deals. Don’t know who else is being talked about.

UK catcher displayed some big time slugging ability this year.
