LSU Postgame Report

Vescovi is a good stand still 3 point shooter and he will get more assists and fewer turnovers as he learns the offense.

JJJ disappeared in the second half offensively.

Bowden is pressing trying to be the overall leader and replace Turner as the guy UT looks to for clutch baskets.

Pons had a solid game offensively.

LSU's veteran guards burned the defense today.

Key game coming up Tuesday night in Columbia as Tennessee cannot afford to start 0-2 in conference play.

As to Vescovi: The kid made 6 3-pointers in his debut game - as a freshman.
Sure he made the sort of mistakes you expect out of a freshman (especially one who's had precious little time to practice with his teammates).
He'll learn to play defense and limit his turnovers as time goes by and he learns the system.
Best of all, he provides a badly-needed spark to this under-manned team.
I think we'll keep him.
Totally agree people are judging an 18 yr old that’s had 1 week of practice and being critical of his play. The kid was the major bright spot and he has only been with team one week! It was amazing what he did.

Good write up. It was nice to see JJJ put more loft on his outside shot. I still believe we have to work inside/out when the opponents half court defense is set, because you are correct....expecting us to shoot well from the perimeter consistently isn’t likely. But we often don’t even look to make an entry pass to the post or anywhere in the paint. Additionally, I don’t even know if Fulky can face up and hit a 10-15 foot shot. Not sure I have ever seen him shoot one. Teach Pons how to dribble and his athleticism will shine even moreso next year. Bowden...have no clue what the answer is. Otherwise, give more players minutes so they develop and let’s run more and be more aggressive on initial or secondary breaks. Only way to do that however is to defend and eliminate offensive rebounds which we didn’t do very well today. Fulky, Pons, and ON get pushed around, but each of them can run.

Only one game but Vescovi’s shot looks pure. And he clearly isn’t afraid. He is going to be a nice college player for years. When he actually learns what our offense is and knows where his teammates are on the court I don’t think he will turn it over as much when he puts it on the floor and drives to the goal. I do think Barnes needs to use Pons more as a screener at the top of the key as at least he is a bigger threat as a pick and pop than others.
I also noticed the improved form on James' shot.

ON STARTING VESCOVI
“I pretty much last night, in talking to the coaches, we were actually — if you want to go back in mind, as I start thinking about it — the first day we got on the floor with him. I was really taken aback by what he knew about our offense. I was totally surprised. We obviously wanted to put in some things he was familiar with that he has used with the past. We used some of that today. He, as time went on in practice, our mindset was we know after just a couple days it was inevitable he was going to be a starter, so we said, ‘Why not do it now?’” You think about what he went through today, he shot the ball well. His turnovers hurt, he knows it. A lot of that had to do with fatigue. That was probably my fault leaving him out there too long. He looked tired..."

ON ACCEPTING THE GOOD AND BAD WITH VESCOVI
“Some of his turnovers, I know they were experience. The one I worry about most of all was traveling. We have watched him in practice and said look they might not call this in European basketball, but this is going to be a travel. The one they called was a travel on the far end in the second half. He has worked hard. He has tried to work hard on that to understand that he can’t split his feet. He is good on ball screens. There is no doubt about that....He is going to make some mistakes and we are going to have to live with it because is starting the season in the middle of the season. His first game was a conference game, but there is no doubt everybody saw that he has a chance to be a really terrific player. He is a guy that wants to distribute the ball. He will learn. He will watch tape and if he is anything like he did watching tape to learn our offense in watching tape to learn after a game, he is going to be a good basketball player. He really is..."

ON VESCOVI DEFENSIVELY
“I think right now today, he got a little fatigued, but he is our best defender getting over screens. He is in a clinic doing it. You watch him and just watching tape of him in practice, we showed guys, this is how you get over ball screens. He has been taught well to do that. He spent a lot of his life in ball screen obviously. He has done that. He is competitive...The only way he is going to get in shape, he is going to have to play into shape..."

It's going to be a tough year.

But keep in mind, Vescovi was supposed to be the 4th best recruit in next years class.
Between him, the 3 new frosh, and Uros coming back, I believe the future is bright.
4th best, but that is born solely out of unfamiliarity with him and his game. If he truly is the 4th best player, then we have an extremely talented class coming in.

LOL...BTO took the torch and ran with it for several seasons. ZJC started these long ago, and then asked me to start doing them, as his schedule didn't allow for it anymore. I did it for a couple seasons until it became too much to do with my work schedule. Not sure why BTO gave it up recently, but I felt like this game, especially, deserved one.

Not the result we wanted, but a lot to discuss and this is an effort to keep it in one place.

Olivier gonna be something special in year 3 or 4 if he can get some strength & play explosive.

His back to the basket is better than almost everyone on the team. He is having similar issues Kyle had with lacking the strength to finish at the rim.

James & Bowden will both benefit from Santiago handling the ball. And Pons may benefit the most both seem to have some instincts already from playing international ball, that dish & dunk was gorgeous.

Listen I am glad the kid is a vol but he looks like an off guard that is a set shooter. I don’t see explosiveness in his quickness or leaping. Very average looking athleticism to me
I didn't get to watch the game but a friend of mine that knows basketball said the same thing.

I’m tired of seeing Fulky getting smashed for being too small, unathletic, and not producing much. That dude leaves his guts on that floor every game he plays. Typically no player on either team out hustles Fulky. He does so many little things that help the team it’s incredible really. Plus he plays above the rim and is a poor mans Rodman. He probably gets Vols 5-7 extra possessions every game at least.
The kid is playing out of his true position out of necessity but I bet he’s averaging around 12pts, 5 RBs, 2 AST, 1 Bl. I wish all of our players had his motor.

Pretty comical hearing the heckling directed at Will Wade. "Criminal", "cheater", "you should be in prison", "Pillsbury Doughboy".

Since "ButterBean" has been assigned to Donnie, I'll go with "Fluffy McMuffinTop".

Vescovi doesn't elevate a whole lot when taking his stationary 3-point attempts, but it sure was accurate. Hopefully his release is quick enough that opponents won't be blocking many after they've evaluated his game video.

He's really shifty. Kind of has a Larry Bird-like flow... faking out defenders with both feet still on the ground. Head fakes (as previously noted above) I guess.

Doesn't give up easily when attempting to get the ball in to a post. Maybe he can help Fulkerson be more of a scoring weapon. I'd like to see JJJ post up smaller guards and have SV work the ball in to him down low. JJJ may not have been playing a lot with his back to the basket. Seems like most of JJJ's attempts are either 3s or from 12-15 feet. JJJ has a Dale Ellis body. I hope he can use it like DE.

A lot of SV's 3s were nothing but net. It's just one game, but his stationary 3 might be better than Turner's.

BTW, was Turner on the bench? I was so focused on SV that I forgot to look for him. Last week versus Wisconsin LT was still a game captain with Bowden. They both met with the refs at midcourt a few minutes before tip off.

Also on Vescovi, I'm not as concerned about not redshirting him now to have a 5th year in 2023-24. I think he'll be getting paid to play by then, although possibly in Europe or another overseas league. NBA is certainly not off the table either. We'll get to see how he rolls with several future NBAers also on the court with him next year.

In the videos I saw, they were running him pretty hard this week. I could imagine that his legs may not have been recovered yet. I think we will have a better idea of his athletic potential after he acclimates a bit more.

He alluded to that in his postgame interview, the way he stated it was like nothing he's experienced in practice. It will take time for him to acclimate but was impressed with his confidence.
He will get better with S&C and would have been great if he could have RS.

Wanna be the quick voice of logic and remind people that The sample size is too small to know if Vescovi is actually a good shooter or not.

But now I want to voice my biggest frustration from the game...

And that’s the fact Will Wade is allowed to roam the sideline. What a farce. It’s such a disgrace and honestly, us as fans of college basketball are partly to blame for not putting more pressure on the SEC and NCAA to act.

66% from 3. And 48.5% thru six games in July. He sucks.

In the G League Challenge against g league player.
4 games 60% overall 53.8% from 3. He's legit.

so in 11 games he's about 56.1% from 3.

I’m not doing a good job following some of your syntax there.

But don’t get me wrong. If Vescovi was a stock, I’d be buying.

All I’m saying is we’ve got people jumping to conclusions that require more data. Not just about his shooting.

But let’s be real. If he shoots 40% from 3 this year that’d be absolutely phenomenal. I’m real skeptical of expecting more than that until it happens.
