Make me feel better...

After week 10 TN was ranked well above USC and TCU. SC beat TN in week 11 (oops).

Had all 3 teams won out after week 10, how would USC or TCU have leaped over TN?

I may have this wrong. Been a minute.

TCU was already ahead of us before losing to SCjr. They weren’t dropping unless they lost.

It would have been a debate over 11-1 TN and 12-1 PAC Champ who finished with 3 wins over ranked teams. That extra game probably would have given them an edge.

We will never know for sure though so it doesn’t matter.

I'm surprised that so many people think we'd of gotten in over a 12-1 USC PAC 12 Champion.

Personally, I'm convinced that USC and TCU controlled their own destiny and we needed one of them to lose. Losing to South Carolina probably prevented a riot, because we'd of been #4 this week and #5 next week after USC avenges their loss to Utah.

If we had handled business in Columbia and Nashville, we were almost certainly gonna be in. And there’s a very real chance that TCU is about to steam rolled, and Utah probably wins too- so it wouldn’t have mattered. But end of the day, with our resume, they would have taken a one loss SEC team over a pac 12 champ with a loss to Utah.

We wouldn’t have fallen below them, instead they would have passed us up as they continued to win and better their resume. They’re going to finish their season with 3 consecutive wins over top 15 teams and a PAC12 championship (if they win) while we would have beaten an unranked SC and Vandy. I’m not saying it’s right cause we still have the better resume, but that’s the reasoning the committee would have used.

If USC and TCU win out there is no way in hades Tenn goes in before an undefeated big 12 and 1 loss Pac12 champ that hasn't been in before. Not a chance.

I'm sorry, but guarantee there are quite a few people on the committee who have USC there only because there are no other choices.

They ruffled a lot of feathers with the Riley move and basically robbing OUs core.

Nobody wants to reward them THIS YEAR, but here we are

Reasons we would not have been in the Top 4 if all won out:

1. TCU and USC would have conference championships.
2. TCU would be undefeated.
3. USC would have the same number of ranked wins. UCLA, Notre Dame, Utah. We would have Alabama, LSU, and South Carolina. The CFP rankings are the only ones that count. AP at the time of the win is irrelevant now.
4. SEC fatigue. No one outside of the SEC wants to see two SEC teams in the playoffs. Big Ten would complain that Ohio State should be in.

It would have been a shame to not get in at 11-1, for any team for that matter. And I think we would have been the one most disappointed.

You want to feel better? Yeah we screwed the pooch against SC, but many talking heads said that 8-4 was Heupel’s ceiling in year 2. Instead we finished 10-2 and were at one point the number one team in the country. We have some great recruits coming in next year. The players look forward to coming to the facility again, the fanbase is united, we have a coach that is loved by his players and staff, etc. I’m very pleased with the direction of the program.

And not sure even if we had won out if they would give us the nod over conference champs TCU and USC. Likely would’ve been Georgia, Michigan, TCU and USC. And tbh I couldn’t complain too much if that were the case.

My first post, though I read alot and comment some on others. So, had we beaten South Carolina, would we have been in the top four at the end of the regular season? I'm guessing no. I think the Trojans and/or Ohio State would still be ahead of us. Maybe not though. I'd feel better knowing we would not have gotten in regardless of the South Carolina outcome. Either way, GREAT season...GBO!
With our LSU loss ending up a fringe top 25 win, I think USC would have easily jumped us as a 12-1 champ who avenged their only L. No one wanted to see TN Vs Georgia again.

I agree with everything you say.

Think of the TV revenue a 1 loss PAC12 champ would bring in. The committee does. Ohio State will always get the nod if there's any way possible.

Wanna fix it? Go 13-0.

Choose to be happy!

A painful loss, no doubt, but a powerful lesson for this team that will be recollected as a cautionary tale for a long time.

Sorry but we controlled our own destiny. Beat SC and in.

Advil helps the pain.

The scenario of 1 loss conference champs overtaking Tennessee was already being made. If TCU & USC win Sat both would be in even if Tennessee had won out. They’d won 2 more games in TCU case & USC would have wins over UCLA, ND & Utah in 3 straight weeks.

Maybe, but I still think a game like that was bound to happen at some point. Our defense just isn’t that good and the SEC always exposes that eventually. Losing Hooker for the year was far more devastating to me than the loss. With Hooker, I have zero doubt we win our NY6 bowl. With Milton, we probably do if it’s against the ACC, but not a lock.

South Carolina isn’t even ranked if we beat them.

To heck with the ridiculous playoffs! The Four Team selection was idiotic from the outset. in almost every case, it’s practically impossible to pick the top four teams with all of the variables in the mix. In the meantime, now football fans of most anyone in the top ten is disappointed with having to “settle” for what was at one time, a “Quality New Year’s Day“ bowl game. It’s frustrating to feel bad about a 10 win season in the SEC, and I for one will not participate in the weeping and gnashing of teeth. Go Big Orange!

10-2 first time since FDR (seems like). Enough to console many of us who've been here thru the dark ages.

It's woulda, coulda, and shoulda, but if S. Cal were to win out, and we had beaten USCe, I'm convinced the committee would take USC instead of us, because they bring in a HUGE tv market and all that MONEY, and a one-loss conference champ is good enough cover for them to justify it.

I haven’t read any comments but USC jr and TCU would be ahead of one loss TN team.

Vols would definitely have been in at 11-1

I disagree as TCU was already in the top four w a Big 12 championship game to play for. Also, the committee would not taken a one loss TN over a Pac 12 champion who just beat three consecutive ranked opponents: UCLA, Notre Dame and Utah. The committee will love the Notre Dame win imo.
With that said, I always thought a one loss TN team needed a USC or TCU loss, which could still happen.
I rather have been 11-1 and defeated USCjr, but I wouldn’t have had an issue with the committee selecting USC or TCU over a one loss, non-conference champion TN team. TCU beat ranked opponents as well as USC Jr.

Plus, losing Hooker would’ve hurt our chances, too, as Joe isn’t near his level.
