Malachi Wideman

There's a video in Wideman's thread in the RF where DWade and LeBron are watching him play and coming out of their seats after a couple of really impressive dunks, including one over a couple players. Elite level athlete that can jump out of the gym. Says he loves to play defense, which I'm sure made him even more attractive to Barnes. This is a huge pick-up for the basketball without having to use a scholarship. Pretty sure Wideman is a 4 star, combo guard ranked around 120 in basketball and top 60 in football

Yeah, I just watched a video on youtube of him blocking some shots. Looked a bit like Pons out there. Very athletic.

This video...but it is from his Sophomore year:

Bowden would be a better comp. than Pons IMO. Looks like he already has better handles than Bowden though.

Just compared him to Pons because his ability on defense. Don't really see Bowden blocking shots much. That and he has a good outside shot like Pons and is a high flyer like he is. Just not as buff as he is. More speedy/explosive than he is.

2 points:

--Rivals has this kid as our overall 2nd best recruit behind Bailey
--It has Weinke as the primary recruiter. I have never seen his name on any recruit we've been able to get

It's really happening......

I just hope he actually plays both sports. Seen this a lot and it rarely happens once the players get on campus. Seems like Robert Meacham was a really good basketball player that wanted to do both out of high school but never did.

Be good at one sport with a chance to play pro ball or be average or mediocre in two sports. We may never see a Bo or Deon again.

Tennessee will, no joke, have the best two walk-ons in the country on our bench next year. It's not often you teams can claim two athletes like Wideman and Beckwith without throwing a scholly at them. Wideman is a 4* basketball recruit, and Beckwith is borderline 4* basketball recruit. The depth on this basketball next year will be insane. We might have walk-ons playing more minutes than some of our scholarship athletes. Beckwith could be the next Pons.

They will be coming to basketball season late so unless we have a big depth problem I doubt they will contribute much. However they can contribute in practices (scout team).

Where are you seeing Beckwith's basketball ranking?

Barnes might be sniffing around Pruitt's program looking for some guys next year. This kid looks like he could help. Needs to find a wide body for the post.

IIRC WG's 40 time was 4.18 seconds. Gault was on a world record 4x100 shuttle relay team (I think that was the correct term). Mike Miller and Darryal Wilson (2 other TN WRs) were also members of that RT. Anthony Hancock was another sprinter/WR a class or 2 ahead of Gault. Seems like he was not the 4th on that world record setting group... it escapes me who the 4th was.

The 4x100 shuttle relay was run on the 100 meter section of the track with 2 runners each heading in opposite directions, not the traditional 4x100 that was a single lap around the track with the baton being handed off runner to runner.

Both staffs helped recruit Wideman. I doubt we get any more help by looking at football players. The elite guards will help free up our inside game.

Don’t remember the year, but I saw some football players playing basketball against, pretty much, the men’s basketball team in the Bubble, and James Banks was the best basketball player on the court

Competition at the bball practice should be fun next year. One thing that has really been missing from this year's team is physicality and tenacity. I really like the tenacity Springer and KJ bring. I know MW and DB will bring tenacity and physicality. Anybody that is in the program that doesn't want to be tenacious or physical might as well start looking somewhere else. Today's been a great day to be a Vol fan both teams improved by one commit.
