Per the BBC Putin and obama are on the phone.

If this goes bad we could end up in WW3

Nah. It will be in the news for a couple weeks, but that's probably about it. Biggest implication will be the potential for much stronger sanctions.

With Obama's skill and finesse at foreign diplomacy he will end up making the Russians look justified.

It's a European/Asian matter, he needs to stay out of it for now.

Who is going to do the investigation? It's in separatist territory.

That's when the EU steps in and demands an impartial investigation by a completely neutral party.

China, Japan, South Korea...someone in the Asian sphere that has zero interest in this deal and would be acceptable to both sides.

Providing the evidence isn't carted up and hauled off in the meantime. Which I would suspect is already the case.

What I don't understand is how a civilian airline could file a flight plan over a contested war-zone where military aircraft have been consistently shot down....

After the year it's had thus far, I think the Malaysian civilian air services will most likely be completely overhauled.

It seems this is the "highway" over there. I wondered the same thing as you.

Apparently there was a Chinese flight on the same path and was rerouted immediately. The pilot saw it happen.

The same reason civilian aircraft were flying over the Persian Gulf in the 80s. (Iran Air Flight 655)

The international air routes are well known and I'd wager a guess the airliner was in one. And Fl Vol 79 can help in the technical regards, but if that plane was hit by a radar of some type, it would have sent back a signal that it was a civilian aircraft.

Someone screwed the pooch huge if it was shot down.

This is something that would be completely out of their hands. We aren't talking about a missing airliner that had some questionable background. If it was in an established airway with a valid flight plan, there's not a whole lot that can be done.

It's one of those things that is coincidental that it happens to be Malaysia Air. Sadly enough.

Regardless of what happens, the rebel cause has been really hurt by this...

This and your earlier post is the turning point. If Moscow gives the FDR to an international group or to the Malaysians, this is the best (and only) course they can take to deny any complicity in the matter.

And if those rebels are prohibiting emergency responders from getting to the site, there's a solution for that as well. It's called the "or else" option and ends up with some hot lead and steel as the "or else" portion.

This would create more of a diplomatic mess. But there's going to be evidence outside the black boxes. And if was a missile, the boxes are only going to be of limited value anyway, right?

Yes and no. If it was a mechanical failure of some kind, the FDR will show that.

But you are correct that the evidence outside the FDR is far more damning. There will be pieces of a missile that can be traced.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry just directly accused the Russian air defense command of downing the aircraft to protect the pro-Russian terrorists and will present evidence shortly.

Assuming non-Russian investigators have access to the site.

But I'm guessing we have satellite and other intelligence which would show whether or not separatists possessed missile systems in the area.

An unofficial tweet indicates 23 Americans citizens were on the plane.
