Manafort Trial Thread

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III specifically told prosecutors to stop using the word “oligarch” to describe wealthy Ukrainians, whose dealings with Manafort are at the heart of the fraud charges he faces in northern Virginia federal court.

The judge said the term has a “pejorative” meaning and is not relevant in this case. Further, he cautioned that using it could suggest Manafort is associated with bad people – and guilty by association.

“It’s not the American way,” the judge said. He noted that wealthy donors like George Soros or the Koch brothers also could be considered oligarchs.

Hmm, you sure about that? I mean Evil hasn't posted that in here yet.....

Just waiting for the Manafort Defense to call on Rod Rosenstein to testify for when he cleared Manafort for the same thing years earlier. If that happens, then RR has to step down from the Mueller Investigation.

Manafort, an American, bought suits from a NY men’s store, by wiring money to the store from his foreign accounts. Don’t we all do that? Nothing about that arrangement sounds sketch.

Well that proves it then, guilty of colluding with the Russians to get Trump elected.

No, but it does go towards showing (1) knowledge of the foreign accounts and (2) use of the foreign accounts for transactions in the US. Hard to say you forgot to declare the assets in those accounts on your taxes when you clearly know about and are using them.

"Jurors heard testimony from Maximillian Katzman, 29, who works at his father's high-end men's fashion store in New York.
He testified that the store, Alan Couture, has only about 40 regular clients and Manafort was one of their top five buyers. Manafort primarily bought suits, sportscoats and outerwear, Katzman said.
Katzman's brown hair was slicked back and he wore a crisp navy suit, pocket square and striped tie.
Prosecutors have made a point to highlight Manafort's wealthy lifestyle, which they say was funded through illicit means. This strategy earned an early rebuke from the judge, who told them yesterday that it wasn't a crime to be rich".

Who knew that Manafort was literally an ostrich coat wearing cuckservative?
Hope he didn't let Steve Bannon do his wife.

And I made no point about what he purchased, just where he purchased it (clothing store in the US) and how he purchased it (wire transfer from foreign account) and how that's relevant to the crime charged (failure to declare income earned/held abroad). It's a wee bit strange for an American to use wire transfers from a foreign account for a purchase of clothing from a US store and then maintain that you forgot about those accounts when tax season comes.

"The prosecution presented two invoices for custom suits from Alan Couture nearing $66,000, as well as invoices for $160,000 in silk rugs. The judge read aloud a stipulation stating that offshore funds were wired to the Virginia rug vendor to pay for them".

Trump's tweet today reeks of desperation. I think his concern is that Manafort is going to be convicted and that he will then have no choice but to spill the beans on Trump to save his own neck. Choosing between loyalty to a guy that disavows you versus at 70 years old getting sentenced to 15 years or so in prison will take him about 3 seconds so answer anything Mueller wants to ask him..

The lunatic is actually calling on his recused Attorney General to do something about the "rigged witch hunt." Bizarro world.

"Under questioning by Manafort's attorney, Wall testified that some of Bijan's other clients "occasionally" paid with wire transfers.

The witness seemed uninterested in the proceedings, sometimes giving extremely brief answers. He acknowledged that he was testifying Wednesday as a result of a federal subpoena, and that Mueller subpoenaed financial documents from his company.

Judge T.S. Ellis once more criticized the prosecution's strategy, saying, "I understand this effort to show that he lived lavishly, but at some point it's not relevant." Mueller prosecutor Greg Andres said he was trying to highlight Manafort's income, not his lifestyle".

American customers shopping in American stores paying with wire transfers from Cyprus. Happens all the time, I'm sure.

The far left doesn't care one way or the other about Manafort, these alleged crimes are from years ago, all they want is for him to plea out to get Trump nothing more. Very sad state for the democrat party

The judge even called the prosecution out for this exact thing in the opening.
