Marcus Smart

Travis Ford is in big trouble. As if being 4-6 in the conference after 4 straight losses wasn't bad enough, his star player has imploded. This also comes after they've already lost 2 other players, one to dismissal and another to injury. Oklahoma State may not even make the tournament.

I'm surprised at some trying to defend what Smart did.

Steven Pearl: I'm not saying what Marcus Smart did was right. But the fan should be held just as accountable. It was a grown man and a college kid, come on

Jay Bilas: Does a university booster get to say whatever he wants, and a "student athlete" is required to take it? What responsibility does TTU have?

Fran Fraschilla: If Super Fan dropped the "magic hate word" as Marcus Smart walked away then EVERY person who heard it needs to come forward ASAP.

No matter what the fan said, Smart crossed the line and should be punished accordingly. It doesn't matter what the fan/booster said.

I agree. Just say something back at the most. No need to shove the guy. He didn't shove you. I know his adrenaline was pumping and it was in the heat of the moment, but you can't put your hands on spectators. Smart needs to change his name. This isn't the first time he's had anger issues.

Yep. Poor judgment. Like I posted before, I'm really surprised some are trying to defend this behavior, regardless of what the fan said.

I don't think they are necessarily defending the fan/booster. Seems they are getting more at calling the guy a complete dumbass for trying to provoke a college kid in the middle of a heated basketball game, which he was. That in no way takes blame of Smart, but the guy was being a tool.

Fans yell stupid crap at basketball games all the time. It's not a situation unique to this particular idiot fan. It's irrelevant to the discussion, IMO.

Buying a ticket shouldn't give you the right to yell whatever you want at athletes. IMO Act like a grown up, some fans deserved to be punched in the mouth. The Vernon Maxwell story comes to mind.

If I am walking down the street and I yell and cuss at you, I'd probably end up in jail. Why can we pretend its ok during a basketball game? Especially one that involves what we consider kids.

We can say Smart crossed the line, and he did, but to pretend the fan wasn't at fault first is asinine, especially when this specific fan has done things like this before with no repercussions.

It's not even just basketball fans and athletes alike end up making bad decisions in many different sports now days. It's hard to excuse either, but if it were my players I would ask them to be the bigger men.

If Smart walks over to a security guard and has the fan ejected (I'm sure others in the section could collaborate anything said which might be unacceptable), I'm fine with that. That's not what happened.

Fans yell inappropriate things all the time. I'm not saying I condone it, but it doesn't give a player an excuse to assault.

The fact is no one knows what the guy said so it's just an accusation. Smart is a dumbass for putting his hands on the guy. I guarantee you that Duke students say way more vile and hurtful things to players of other teams than that guy probably did. Whether what he said was right or wrong, you can't put your hands on the guy. Now he'll get suspended and cost his team some games for being a hothead.

You can go to jail for cussing at someone?

I agree. Smart did not handle it the right way, but the pass that we give fans on their behavior is completely pathetic.

I have no problem with what Smart did. This guy dropped the N bomb and laughed in his face. He has a history of causing trouble. He's a grown man, weak minded fool who gets his jollies off of calling kids names. He needs to be beaten

The worst part was the woman next to the guy pointing at Smart with her mouth wide open like she was shocked. If the n-word truly got dropped, I think Smart showed restraint in not sticking his fist through the dude's skull.

You're right, but it does explain his actions. It's one of those "you just can't do that, but I see why you did" kind of things.

And you're right, it does explain Smart's action.

But you can't condone them.

This so-called super fan is a well documented sh!t disturber also...why give him the power of responding or acknowledging anything he has to say?

Not at all. It's responding to nothing more than mere words with physical violence. The explanation is that Smart is a jerk that cannot control his own actions and, as a consequence, unjustly assaulted someone.

That wasn't physical violence. That was giving a dumb redneck a reality check.
