Mark Smith

Strength coach could receive more than $300,000 if not retained : Football : GoVolsXtra.com

Tennessee's athletic department will owe head football strength and conditioning coach Mark Smith more than $300,000 if it can't prove it has justified cause to fire him, according to a memorandum of understanding acquired by the News Sentinel on Monday.

Smith is under strict review by coach Lane Kiffin and is not expected to be retained - if the two parties can come to a mutual parting. That, however, could prove to be a challenge considering the financial implications.

Off subject, but it's completely insane to me that we were paying Johnny Majors around that much a season near the end of his term.

a good friend of mine who threw shot at USC is good friends with aaron ausmus. I asked if he knew anything about what was going on with the S&C coach position at UT and here is what he told me

apparently ausmus was the choice for the position that this staff was ready to go with. He had a history with both orgeron and kiffin. Also, he was highly recommended to kiffin by the strength coaches at LSU and USC. Those two were apparently kiffin's first and second choices and they turned him down but told him that ausmus was the man he needed to go after. We offered the job to ausmus but sarkisian was already on him. This is where my friend was still a little confused as to what went down, but apparently tennessee thinking that ausmus was gonna go to washington decided to hire mark smith after a recomenedation from david reaves and a need to make a hire quickly. Washington in similar fashion pulled the trigger on someone else thinking that ausmus had made the decision to go to tennessee.

Now what went wrong with smith at tennessee apparently stems from a conflict of views with coach O. While kiffin makes all the decisions and is ultimately in control of the team, ed O is apparently the drill seargent of the team and he is very firm with what he expects from his players and commands alot of them. He also is very firm on how the day to day operations of the football team goes when it comes to work-outs, discipline, team rules etc. Smith is a hard nosed guy himself and there has been alot of friction between the two as to how things are gonna work with the team and their workouts.

from what he was able to tell me, i believe ausmus is the guy we want. Hes young, was recommended by the two best guys in the business, hes familiar with the USC style of program that kiffin is trying to build, knows how to get along with coach O, and being a tennessee guy would probably stick around here for awhile.

from a poster on another board

FWIW a friend of mine with some contacts said that CLK and CMS have a difference in training philosopy. CLK wants emphasis on agility while CMS wants to focus on training for power.

seems like that would have been known before the hire rather than 6 months into it, if of course it is the real reason for the friction.

If right I would have to agree with CLK then

SEC trains for speed and agility
BIG 10 trains for power

see the difference here.

I have heard some similar stuff to what REX posted a few posts up. I talked to a "coach" in the business who knows both parties involved. I also picked got some info from a few people I know within the AD.

A lot of it was similar to what was posted above. One of the biggest sources of friction was that Smith would not let other sports in the weight room. He was told that he had to and this set him off. When he was at UF and USC he had a weight room that was for FB only and could not come to grips that he had to share. With the basketball team having a place in Pratt and the baseball team getting a room in the renovated Lindsey Nelson, this would only leave a few of the minor sports to share the weight room with the FB squad. I do know that he had placed an order for all new weight room equipment because he deemed the old stuff to not be sufficient. Supposed to be moving in to a bigger weight room within the next year as the LV's are taking over the older one. Also heard about an incident with Warren where he apparently was not satisfied after a Warren stopped running because his asthma flared up and a trainer pulled him out.

As Volquest first reported nearly a month ago, Lane Kiffin and strength coach Mark Smith have parted ways and there is some movement on hiring a replacement. Get the latest on the quick departure of Smith and get the latest on a possible replacement who tells Volquest.com that he has applied for recently posted position. It's all inside

I don't have an account.. Anybody read the full article?

Talked to some players today. Said smith has been gone and that Ausmus is the name being thrown around within the locker room. He said it wasnt for roids but due to just butting heads with the coachs.
