My original response to the person stating that stoops deferring implied Tennessee was going toTeam A receives opening kickoff from Team B and Team A ends first half in possession of the ball giving them 1 more possession than Team B in the first half.
Team A is +1 in possessions at that point.
Team B receives opening second half kickoff and Team A ends game in possession of ball giving Team A and B have the same number of possessions in second half.
Adding the total possessions from 1st half to the total possessions from 2nd half yields one additional possession for Team A, an extra possession.
Receiving the opening kick doesn't guarantee an extra possession but it can and does happen.
get an extra possession because of it.
