Memphis hired Pastner. He had about the same credentials. Maybe less.

He was an assistant d1 coach. And not for nothing but how's that turned out? Great recruiter, crappy coach. He's about 1 more disappointing year away from being canned.

As I asked earlier, can you name a high major d1 school that hired a HS coach? As I also said, I can see and understand Illinois hiring him if all other candidates fail. But not Tennessee hiring him if Martin were to leave as the OP suggested.

Cuonzo's staff is extremely well connected in Chicago. Great players come from that city year in and year out. Recently, they've been leaving the state altogether. If Cuonzo can recruit Chicago, that makes Illinois one of the Elite jobs in the country.

1.98% of Illinois fans/boosters/admin hates Groce

2. Illinois is one mess of an institution

3. Ohio fans are as crazy about tracking plans as Tennessee fans are

Yet Groce still leads.

Where this is all relevant: The Illinois job will be open again in three years. Cuonzo wasn't interested now, but could he be more inclined to do so then?
