Martin interested in Illinois opening (Rumor)

Martin should get the HINT by Smart turing it down --- they have no players at Illinois -- it would be a type of situation Dooley has --- 3 years or more to rebuild -- Weber stuck around because he had Bill Selfs players the 1st 2 seasons then everything went downhill.

Shaka Smart turning it down tells me nothing about the Illinois job. It tells me everything about his view of the VCU job. He has no desire to leave. He's well compensated, he has no pressure, and his family is happy. Someday, someone is going to throw a ridiculous amount of money to come into a situation he finds appealing. Until then, he's happy and has the luxury of being selective.

If he goes, he goes you cannot fall in love with a coach. I am a Vol fan not a CM fan. I am sick of coaches leaving. I guess it is just the day we live in. $$$$$$$$

The reason CCM is here is because of $$$$$$$.....if he left for Illinois, it would be more than about money imo.

All coaches are careful when they release statements when situations like this happens to cover their butts with the fanbase ,players, and potential recruits. CCM stated he had no plans, blah..blah..blah, well that can be true at that moment while he or a representative may be seeking the job or talking to Illinois reps who may have approached him with interest. If he gets the job, he would say at that time I had no plans but things have changed.....they cover it both ways. This day in time, there is no loyalty from any coach nor the universities. Money is great but truly is the root of all evil.

Are you guys taking these rumors seriously?

Martin came out and denounced the Illinois position. Don't do this to yourselves.

I don't think I agree with you a ton, but this is a solid statement IMO.

We've just got to sit back and wait for next year, but I'm pretty confident we will have CCM when it comes.

Pretty much nailed it. Coaches, CEO's, players, etc all do this. Just because CCM hasn't spoken with Illinois doesn't mean his agent hasn't. So technically, he isn't lying.

Just like at 9:55 AM on 3/22/12 I have no plans on leaving my job. But if my phone rings later today with an offer of more $$$$$, guess what? Seee YA!

Until Bruce crashed the ship, UT was as good a job. Illinois is down but fertile grounds to recruit in addition to Martin being from Illinois, I would say if Smart doesn't take the job, Martin will leave. It sucks for the program if he does.

By crash the ship do you mean took all the ncaa sanctions with him and his staff? If so, I completely agree

Basketball is a one year turnaround for a great recruiter. Doubt me? Watch the Kentucky turnstile.

If he leaves he leaves. Sux but is what it is. IL could be a better fit for him over all, and may be awhile until he has another shot at one of his top schools. No one knows what his family thinks about living in kville, etc etc. He was an unknown and I don't think he's the guy of the future anyway. He'll leave in a few yrs with just some decent success. It'll be tough for us to find another Pearl. He really loved being at UT and no matter what anyone thinks about him u can't deny that.

Anyway I think if he leaves the search will settle any itch Hart may have to get his first major coaching hire. He's a bball guy too, so let's see what he can get done.

I know he had solid yr, but the SEC was pretty bad this yr. I'm ok with him being a transition coach. It's important to have one when replacing a large figure like Pearl.

I can't believe that anyone would lament at CCM leaving for Illinois. The SEC was down, and UT lost in the 2nd round of NIT to an in-state directional school. If Illinois is interested in that crap, then I say, please move on it.
The talent right now is better than at Illinois. Self had built that into a top 20 job and Weber ran it into the ground. CCM has Maymon, Stokes Golden. There are a few other quality players to build around.

The SEC is never very good--which is why Martin would be stupid to leave. Kentucky is the big dog, and after that there are a small number of teams vying to be second to fourth-best. Bottom line: The league's mediocrity gives Martin a good chance to get in the Dance every year. That's precisely what Pearl did--and then he did well in the tournament and built the program until his ambition got the best of him. It's all about getting int he dance. Illinois has some tradition, and it's good recruiting territory for sure--but MSU and OSU are always going to be the two best teams in that conference--and then a handful of teams will be battle for spots 3-6---IU, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and maybe Iowa. Bottom line: IMO he's got a better shot at making the Tourney every year in the SEC/UT as opposed to Big 10/Illinois. Hell, we suxed this year, really, and almost got in. It will be tougher in Champagne--book it, Ba-Bee!
