Marvel's Black Panther

I do. DK was worthy of a nom for sure. They were robbed. My poli sci professor made us write a paper on it.

Ok then..I'll buy that you and some others would nominate DK. It is the best of the genre imo, and I still don't think it deserved a BP nom. I love these movies for what they are...but come on.

The Social Network got a Best Picture nomination. Not saying it was bad, but I’d take Dark Knight over that all day.

I don't think either should have.

DK was considered the 2nd highest rated film of the year by critics and fans. It was the top grossing film of the year. Those seem like fairly good reasons to get a nomination, if not the win.

Ok..so was Titanic..which is another movie that didn't belong in that conversation imo.

What type of movies do you think should be Best Picture nominees?

It is subjective I guess, but I think serious or artistic movies are what I consider BP worthy. I don't think Rom-coms, slapstick, horror or comic book movies are in that category. It's just my opinion, no big deal.

I love all those kinds of movies.

But it's best picture, not best serious movie. For some reason it ends up that way, tho. Pretty sure the last non-drama to win was Annie Hall (which is a rom-com).

It's weird that they pigeonhole superhero movies. Might as well say the Odyssey isn't an epic work of art.

It’s kinda like how the Heisman and NFL MVP are defacto QB awards (with the occasional RB thrown in).

There's some that are borderline. Gladiator, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, etc.

That's why I generally like the Golden Globes better than the Oscars. They aren't perfect, but at the least they seperate Dramas/"Serious" movies and Comedies/Musicals. Even then, they royally screwed up with giving Damn the Best Actor in a Comedy GG for The Martian.

DK definitely should have been nominated.

In a field of 10 I would say maybe Winter Soldier deserved a nod. Not saying it should have won but it’s probably the most worthy Marvel film to get one.

The Winter Solider was the only one that came to mind of the MCU that might have deserved a nom, maybe Civil War.

For other comic book movies, I think you could argue Logan deserved one, after all it did get a Best Adapted Screenplay nom. Maybe Wonder Woman, which I think is comparable to the BP "situation". Actually I'm kind of surprised now it didn't get a nom.

When it comes to the Oscars, Quentin Tarantino movies for example will get some attention, but no way in hell will a movie like Django or Pulp Fiction actually win best picture. It may be orgasmic to a few, but it doesn’t have the family friendly broad outreach like a movie like Forrest Gump.

Leo in the revenant was great, but I thought his character in Wolf of Wall Street was borderline iconic. But his character was too obscene to win an award.

Good point.

BP is awarded to the producer / producers of the film. That generally means its a movie that is outstanding in most all of the major areas; Script, Acting, Directing, editing, score ...etc.
Other factors can come in to play, at times, to get a film nominated such as popularity or social impact.

Genre type ( sci- if, comic book, horror, etc ) films are rarely nominated. Having seen 8 of the 9 nominees this year, I can only think of one or two changes I would have made.
