May as well get a full sized truck for the price

It depends on what you plan on using it for Ras.if a smaller truck will do the job, go for it, save on the purchase and on operating cost. I will say this, personally I would not purchase a truck that is not a 4x4. Jmo.

Agreed. Resale being the biggest issue and "needing it and not having it and having it and not needing it"

I'm sorry?

Duramax guy I suppose?

The IHC engines in the Fords and the Cummins in the Dodges, if maitained properly, are, imo, superb choices.

Got a friend with the Cummins in his '02 2500. He stated the same mpg as you, Ob, and I thought he was bs'ing me. After some research and your post, I am impressed.

The 7.3 powerstroke was/is probably the best diesel for light trucks ever built. The older 12 valve 5.9 cummins is a tried and true engine as well.

All of the later built Diesel engines are suffering from regulation, which in return causes power and fuel mileage to suffer. A few tweaks and turns, a removal of this or that, as well as a custom tune to go along with it and it runs like it should.

My 08 makes about 450hp/900tq to the wheels as it sits now making the mpg it does. I have another 100hp/200tq left in it ( another custom tune) it would also gain another 1-2mpg at the higher level tune.

I love my fords but dodge with the cummins is my 2nd choice.

Agreed on the 7.3, that engine is bulletproof.

The new 6.7 isn't half bad either. Been awhile since I've calculated it but I'm getting 20 or so on the highway, it's quiet and has all the power I'll ever need.

I'm in the passive market for a used diesel 4x4. Been looking online, and they have been kinda hard to find. The ones I do find, the $$$ scare the hell outta me.

I haven't driven the 6.7 yet. Mine is quiet as well. Other than the exhaust, but it's not noticeable in the cab with the air on.

Shop around and be ready to jump on one as soon as it hits the market.

do you know which truck you are looking for?

I stole mine. It booked for 18k I paid 10k for it.

My '02 Durango with the 4.7 gaser 4X2 gets about 17 mpg. And I thought that was good, until now.

I like being able to go through a drive through and not have to turn it off to be heard.

Yeah. Lol. The ole 7.3's are loud.

Clank, clank, clank, clank

You can barely hear the 6.7's running.

My FIL had an 02 dodge 1500 with the 360 (5.9-gasser) it got 8mpg. Uphill. Downhill. Loaded. Unloaded. Lol.
It was a 4x4 too.

$$$ yes, but I was amazed while shopping for a diesel at how much NADA added to the vehicle retail with a diesel option - $9000, even with 200k miles. I have an 07 ram with the 5.9 cummins, I get 18 city, 23 hwy without a tuner. It had a 4" straight pipe, too loud for me, I got an Aeroturbine 4040XL resonator and it's a lot quieter now.

What's the beef with the 6.4?

I love the 7.3. They are just hard to come....

Crap motor along with most built after 2003. If you sit any motor besides the cummins in a manual transmission they would be garbage.

Now the new 6.7 is engineering genius, but they should of put a turbo on each bank instead of reengineering the entire motor and putting the turbo on top.

I disagree. The 6.0's had their problems but they are a power house. The 6.4 can handle 600-700hp all day long just like the 6.7's can. Maintenance is key with a diesel (which I'm sure you know) but most people treat them like gas engines and there is the problem.

I do wish ford would have studded all the engines 2003 and up. (Like the 7.3) the newer engines make more boost and can lift the heads.

Just please tell me none of you diesel guys are coal rollers.

Those guys need to be beaten.

Nope. Not I.

I have rolled coal in the past, but not to the extreme those guys do. They are destroying their engines. Excessive amounts of raw fuel will destroy them.

I do blow some smoke under spirited driving. :)

6.0 was complete junk, you go from 24 bolts on the 7.3 to 12 on the 6.0 while making more power. Ding ding ding, stupid alert.

The 7.3 can do plenty of damage to the heads, especially if you beef up the transmission before stacking programs. The 7.3 needs two smaller turbos on each bank running separately from the other. Upgrade the fuel pump, injectors, turbo(bw), and the inter cooler, and you have a 600 hp monster with 1400lbs of torque.

The 6.4s were a disaster mostly because of the emissions program set forth by(you guessed correctly) the usg

What if you don't like big trucks?

define "big"

By my estimation, today's mid-size trucks are about the size of full size trucks from about 10 years ago.

Face it, as America gets fatter, the vehicle of choice lards up as well.
