Maybe it wasn't Sunseri's defense afterall?

Exactly what I was thinking in the 1st half. They didn't even touch ball carriers for 15 or 20 yds after they started running. Just pathetic.

Just the talent level and effort of the players.

I don't know honestly but it does seem like our guys just do not know where to be on plays regardless of their speed. It's either coaching or the players are just not smart enough or dedicated enough to get it down.

I've never seen safety play as bad as I saw this afternoon. Not sure who to blame that on.

even the t.v. announcers were saying things like the vol defense had given up; the tackling was "atrocious"; and there was a glaring disparity in team speed. it was one of the more pitiful displays i've seen by the vols in neyland (and I've been watching since bowden wyatt was head coach).

I don't have a doubt that Sunseri is a decent coach, but we have players who were recruited for a 4-3 converted to a 3-4 and then switched back to a 4-3 after a year of recruiting for a 3-4.

It's confusing to even think about, and probably more so for the players. Even the seniors who are now on their 4th DC in 5 years.

Yeah that is definitely a factor.

I honestly believe you should be able to put 11 defensive players on the field and not tell them anything and they should do better than what they're doing.

Gus Malzahn is a great coach that makes a living going after your weakess, we have too many weaknesses. Our ends suck at contain, safeties are always peeking into the backfield, linebackers are slow and cant shed blocks and only a corner that is a total liability( not cam).

We currently have no speed. But this D has made some plays this year.

Sunseri's D was overall ****.

In Wilcox's last year at UT, his defense finished 30th in the country, in total defense. Then last year under Sunseri the defense was 90-something, in total defense. This year who knows. But why the sudden drop-off? From 2011, Wilcox, to 2012, Sunseri, the defense fell on it's face. And now in 2013 it still can't get up.

Sunseri did well at Alabama and is doing well at FSU. The obvious difference is talent.

Fsu and bama have more talent, yes.
He was LB coach at bama and DE coach at fsu.

Sunseri doesn't call any plays at fsu and didn't call any at bama. As our D coordinator he called that pile of **** last year, though

Lack of accurately evaluated football IQ and lack of quality depth! Just a key factor we have to account for is Butch has only had one full year of searching for recruits. Lets be cautious about declaring a coaching change again! Gus recruited 90% of those offensive players before Chizik got fired. He had an easier turn around because they were built for his system. Butch has to stock his cabinets! This time next fall, we should have a good idea of about this programs direction (Hopefully) We have to hope this stocked recruiting class that's assembled stays close to the numbers and can arrive on campus and produce better defense!

The sudden drop off is from changing schemes. Attempting to change the D from a 43 to a 34. Trying to run man across the line which got us burnt by everyone and garbage play calling led to the worst D in UT history.
